I don’t understand why everyone is missing the most important thing, the signatures looks better. We all know that’s all that matters.
agreed they just look sick. Period
silver 8160 looks better on the black jazzmaster
So what if I put the Hetfield set, would that be kind of a heresy??😂
The Rifferer Actually if you watch Jim Root’s Rig Rundown. He talks about how they set him the red sandblasted Jazzmasters with the hetfield set. In it. And they didn’t work with the kinda amps he uses. It’s all with what kind of amps you are using if the pick ups will sound good or not.
lol
1) they sound less compressed like most emg, more dynamic like a passive pick up but just have enough bottom end and output.
2) most people forget most speakers and amps and pick ups are all tuned on standard tuning, signature gear is for that individual and what they need to find that tone they have been chasing.
Jim is a tad more of a dynamic player because he had both stone sour and slipknot over the years, but of course now slipknot is his main focus. Signature gear is trial and error like anything else, until you hear the stuff in person and see if it fits your rig and your style, hard to judge it overall,
3)good demo nonetheless 🤘🤘
Well said! Thanks for stopping in!
the riffs and the mixing seems very on point the last couple of months. Your going to the next level my dude
Thank you so much! I’m doing my very best to keep learning and delivering quality content
I now understand Jim’s new pickups better and why he came out with these it’s definitely the Slipknot sound we love really focused and well done while the regular emgs are just more wild and a little off. Both are really great though and This video explains a lot.
Actually got close to that "strat" sound at 5:05, lol. Really shows the versatility of the daemonums.
yeah they clean up pretty decently
an obese strat, but a strat none the less
I really can't hear much difference through my headphones, but I'm sure there is a noticeable difference in person. I could barely tell the new signature pickups sounded a hair cleaner or more defined as you may. Like just a slight difference between a little muddy and clean. Great job! Oh, BTW...damn that guitar is beat up! LOL. Wearing in nice!
Thanks don! Yeah it’s hard to convay through a video sometimes but the JR’s are just fuller and fuzzier sounding
Dude, I love how much fun you have doing these. But man, that look on your face, right befire you broke into SRV was priceless!. Btw, I think the best way to put it is that the
daemonums have a wider frequency range, instead of being tighter and focused like the 81/60.
The signature pickups sound more alive, don’t know how to describe it. The 81/60 sound good, just a little more processed. Great demo my dude.
Thanks brother! Yeah they’re just bigger and less “fake” sounding
A little more processed? The 81/60 are likely the most processed and lifeless sounding pickups you can get.
It's due to the external preamp
@@joshbarnes6759 Well, that's just your opinion. Many thinks EMG 81 is still the best, especially for metal music.
I had the daemonums, did not like them. Took them out and stuck Emg 81 back in. To me in person I thought they sounded thin and not as full as Emg 81. Played through a evh el 34, maybe it would sound better through something with 6l6 tubes
Hey man yeah actually the first amp I played through was my evh el34 and I HATED the sound. These pickups vibe with my dual rectifier and my rockerverb very well
@@xanderraymondcharles so you'd think it would sound good with a Mesa boogie mark v:35 ?
Yea to me the new set really does give every string an equal amount of a voice, where the old set dialed back slightly on mids to give that low string slightly extra growl.
I saw someone say they sound “Thick”. Great description in my opinion. Like the perfect Gal - Thick is a wonderful thing.
Funny thing about pickup reviews is that one person can make any pickup sound amazing & when you get them they sound like absolute shit thru your rig! Trial & error thru your personal rig is the only way to find the pickup thats for you!
I just got a set of these thanks to your video... holy crap they're awesome! Im a die hard 81 user (just like Jim I guess) and nothing has that metallic bite and clank the 81 does on chugs, and I know some people hate it but I love it. The Daemonum bridge pickup keep that 81 instantaneous aggressive feel in tact... but they take a little bit of the clank out and add a little girth to the tone without smoothing it out so much like an 85 does. I'm not saying this thing replaces my 81's, but I am saying it sounds fantastic.
Do you like the neck daemonum? I'm thinking about mixing the neck one with an EMG 81 (or maybe a 57) in the bridge
@@emiliolopez8796 I think the Daemonum neck is probably my favorite of all my EMG's in the neck position. I prefer the 81 bridge to the JR bridge if I only had one guitar, but I have 2 guitars with 81s already, and the JR set is a great complement to them.
I feel like the daemonum sound warmer (mid+low) and a little more full where as 81/60 sound a little more treble and thin. Both sound good in a different way.
Dude, good video. Man, I’m getting a Telecaster and my mind was made up on the Squire classic vibe until last night when I re-watched your video of the shootout of the Root Telecaster Fender Vs Squire. Now I want the Squire Root Tele. I might need the Classic Vibe 50’s Tele AND the Jim Root one.
Fantastic playing my guy! I love how you incorporated the octave playing that he does quite a bit! I don’t think you can go wrong either way!
EMG Daemonums vs SD Blackouts shoot-out pls
If you can find me a set of blackouts I’ll make it happen!
You do still have that Jackson Mick signature soloist right?
If you want the best actives, go with the Dave Mustaine Livewire set ;)
Do the Blackouts come in only one flavor? I don't know anything about them, do they not have different tone options like EMGs?
Yo I just wanna say from 5:04 to about 6:15 is the COOLEST transition I think I’ve ever heard. That absolutely blew my mind
the natural ware on the Strat looks so good. I desperately wish they would do another run of that color
The new JR pickups sound more 'passive' and have richer low mids. For me I'd go with either, but finally, EMGs I would not hate to put in traditional designs.
Man I really fell in love with your channel. I'm so jealous you've got so many Jim Root signatures. I want the black Jazzmaster like nobody's business. I'd probably give a pinkie for it. Strumming hand of course..
Not getting rid of my 81/60’s. They sound killer in my ESP and LP Custom. But I do want a set of the Daemonums for another guitar. Think they’d be a bit too thick in a 10lb Les Paul. That thing already hits hard with the 81/60. But The Roots may sit well in some of my lighter guitars. Did not like the Hettfield pups at all. They sounded muddy in all my guitars. First set of EMGs I didn’t like. 81/60 and 81/89R along with 57/66 are amongst my favorite EMGs.
The new ones sound more alive, organic, she's coming alive, it's coming alive, hard to say what caught my attention, but sure it's sounds cools
Hey man, why don't you demo them in standard tuning, cause when it's low tuned everything tends to sound the same and it would be really cool to see someone who doesn't tune to drop q to play these pickups haha
Agree partially, but to be fair these pickups were designed around drop tuning. So to really make them shine I understand testing them low.
Wow, they sound surprisingly versatile! I totally wrote them off when I heard of them but now I have to check them out.
Could you make the intro a little bit quieter? It's always much louder than the rest of the video. Thanks
Quality content yet again. I completely agree with you that they sound fuller and what I’ve noticed is they sound great in any tuning whereas the 81/60s (in my opinion) sounded best in predominantly drop tuning. Once I got my set put in the jazzmaster I went from standard down to drop A and they sounded phenomenal with everything from Blink to Slipknot. Only issue I had was getting use to the look of the jazzmaster without the brushed nickels. Anyways, thanks for another great video, keep up the good work dude!
Can we get more appreciation for that amazing Voodoo Child jam? 🥺
ahh thanks so much!
Awesome video Ray!!! Congrats!!!
Hey thanksb
Thanks bro
I still remember the Fluff-Jim-You love triangle... yes that was me
Just got the 81/60s I prefer the 60 to the 85, your vid helped me decide
I was waiting so long for this video !!!
6:17 It’s official: Ray has gone mad in lockdown
I was possessed by Hendrix for a second
The signature set has more of an organic feel, similar to passives...also they sound less compressed and "squashed" but the difference extremely minimal in the intro song and only becomes more obvious when you played guitar by itself
The 81 seems to almost hit a brick wall with palm muted chords. The Daemonums definitely are more responsive and have way better note separation.
I could listen to you just riffing out for hours
It sound like the 81/60 are just a hair more compressed and the sig set or a hair more open sounding. That's the best way I can describe the difference
Yeah hair or grit is how I would describe it
This is a fantastic comparison. Thank you for your thorough review!!!
Sound to me like the Daemonums have a little less low end mids which is allowing the low end to be heard clearer and so sounding fuller. High end sounds the same, overall just a tigher version of the 81...
Hope your safe Ray!
Channel has been sick man!
Thanks so much!!!
I hope you’re safe as well
Why does everyone's 81 sound so good and mine sounds like a passive one from the 70s????
The Jim Roots sound so crisp, the EMGs are a little muddier, but boy that amp sounds nice
Gabe Hirsh they are both EMG’s
Nice comparison man, well done!
I much prefer his signature pickups. Far more lively, fuller and articulate.
Wish I could come up with sick riff, after sick riff. Well done Sir!
Ahhh thanks so much!
Based on this I would be very happy to run Jim's new sig EMG's in my Strat. I hope a preloaded pickguard will pop up. Thanks Ray.
Amazing playing bro. Have you played the super 77? Trying to debate roots set vs those. They sound plenty hot in this video.
With your clean tone it sounded pretty identical to the clean intro to Hickory Creek by Whitechapel. Keep on rocking brother
good work mate
I have seen many people just received the pickup
but no one wanna make a video about it
I'm curious on how clean channel sounds like tho
I have a perfect rhythm/lead combo with the Daemonums in my Epi LP Standard and the EMG 81s in my Fender Strat. But if I had to choose one set, it would be the Daemonums all day. Riffing is so addictive with those.
Have you tried Jaymz's, or Kirks pickups? I'd love to see a shootout between them the JR ones.
Sure if you can find me a set send them on over!
@@xanderraymondcharles I may have a JH set I can send your way!
Just got a set of these to put in my harley benton '84 extreme
i love how cold the 81 is
It just seems like the presence knob was turned up a little bit with the Jim Root set. A little bit more high end and a tad bit more saturation. Not enough reason for a $230 ‘upgrade.’
hey I appreciate your comment! Thanks for stopping in
Stay Metal Ray thanks for this shootout Ray. Didn’t mean to come off as rude. I was actually in the market for new actives, been deciding between the Jim Root, the Hetfield, or the Seymour Duncan Dave Mustaines and I went with the Duncans. Keep rocking 🤘🏻
Did you see the mini documentary they did on slipknot? I think it came out yesterday.
I closed my eyes/ listened and heard the the signatures sound a lot more crispy and brighter. It cut through. The 81/60 sounded darker and more filtered/bogged down.
That first song sounds exactly like something i would write, i guess thats what years of the knot do to you 😅
Yo!!
Did you Put that NECK on That Body!? Or you bought it PUT Together Like That!?? That EBony NECK, BODY & headstock Combo with The Cream & Black P-UPs Looks DOPE AF 💯
I DIGG The Fender Guitar's When There Metal`d Out Monsters!!
Bcuz ITS NOT supposed to Be 😂 😆
But Now IS! LUV It...
It's DOPE Bro & Sounds Good With Both Sets
that hendrix riff sounded killer all metal'd out lol
Thanks boss!
Hey Ray! I wanted to ask your thought and opinion on something regarding these Daemonum pickups...
*Have you tried these in another tuning besides the drop B/Drop A that Jim uses on your JR Strat???
*If so, do you also find that they sound a bit different tonally due to the difference in tuning (frequency wise to be different in how they respond??)
I bought the first set and have them in an Epiphone G-1275 double neck (6-string neck...) with BOTH necks tuned down to B std. I bought another set and put them in a '20 ESP LTD SC-20 Sonic Blue tuned to C# std. I am finding that they almost sound like 2 different pickups, despite the difference of the guitars themselves, and I think it's in the difference in tuning...
Would love to know what you think...
Thank you for doing your demos correctly
The Daemonums have deeper low end
I agree. Just fuller in general
The daemonums sound a bit more dynamic to my ear while the 81/60 sounds a bit heavier. There are pros and cons to both tho
metal jimmy. awesome ray.
Ayeee thanks so much
@staymetalray-Did you notice that Jim has alnico adjustable poles in his pickups when his signature set dosnt and has flat ceramic poles?
Great work. Daemonums feel more open and uncompressed. But in the mix differences are less obvious.
I like the 81/60 better .. the d's are seem brighter.. I like the darker look too. Good vid but what I really want to know is what one song it was .... 😉
Hi SMR!!! I really enjoy your videos!!! You do such a great job, your tone is amazing!!! I have one question, I just got this set for a Floyd Rose equipped guitar, will they sound good in standard tuning?? I haven’t decided which tuning to go with on this guitar yet, so I’m going to leave it in standard for a while…
Can hear a slight difference, this seems to definitely be a "feel" thing where you need to play them. One pet peeve I have w/ EMG is they don't make all their stuff available for 7/8 string also.
The Het set at least should have had a 7 string available a LONG time ago. Quick edit, if you want your 81/60/85 to sound better, throw a 24 volt mod battery pack in it or do the 2 9 volts.
Hey Ray love your channel bud ! One thing tho you are way more than a « slipknot channel »
You should give yourself more credit I like everything that you do ! Keep it up !
Great demo. To my ears, the JRs have more character and the 81/60 sound generic/compressed in comparison. Thought both were good, but preferred the JR.
Have only ever tried them at A/B tunings which sound great. But would these pickups be suitable to standard or drop D tunings?
The pinch harmonics that you let ring out sound sick
i’ve found from my personal experience that the sigs are really hot even when theyre running through a clean signal
I love the 81/60 set (x series specifically) and all the Retroactives so I thought these would be incredible. Pretty disappointed after trying. Maybe they really are just tuned for Slipknot style playing
The EMG pick ups sound a little bit darker! Keep playing those Hendrix songs 😂 sure he would have love shredding his Strat with this tone !
you got it! I've got tons of Hendrix riffs in the arsenal from when I was 11 years old. I should bust them out some more
Uhh, both are EMGs...
Your face of happiness it say everything ;)
I can’t help it hahaha
I bought this set, sounds killer, but only one major but, when i touch pickup pole piece, it has filthy grounding noise and my wiring, all the arrows, everything is connected correctly, I even swapped pups from my other guitar which has emgs(retro active vintage 70 i believe) and still noise when touched, just wondering if anyone who owns JR set, has this issue?
Well now I know what to get for my birthday ☺️
Now the question is... You've learned Vermilion?
Ray did you relic your yellow strat? If so how ? I wanna relic mine great video thanks ray!
I didn’t. Just played a lot
The Daemonums sound way bigger, as well as more dynamic, especially in the sense that depending on how hard you pick the string, it almost sounds like you get more output the harder you pick the strings, as opposed to the 81/60 set which honestly sound pretty sterile compared to the Daemonum pickups. I especially heard the dynamics when you were playing on the clean and crunch channels on your amp.
Hi Phillip ! I agree with 'U about JR's "Daemonum" EMG signature set ! In my opinion these pickups sound so live, huge and musical as passive pickups but noiseless and defined,
I generally don't like active pickups (GIBSON "500T" Fan ) but I played an Ibanez Rgt6ex, for a long time (specs: neck thru body mahogany, EMG 81/85). "81" specially has its own tone and sounds the same on Mesa and Marshall, so I tried "Retro Active Super 77" set, and that one sound amazing to my flavour ! JR's set tooks the best of both tones, I mean ... Don't 'U think so?
Luca Siciliano it definitely does. From what I’ve seen on the internet EMG also has the X Series pickups which are supposed to have the tone of the EMG pickups, but they’re supposed to sound more natural and similar to passive pickups. That’s why the Daemonum pickups sound much bigger and much more dynamic even though the Daemonum set isn’t an X Series pickup set; it’s made to have all the best qualities of active pickups, but have the dynamics and feeling of passive pickups.
Hi Phillip ! Totally agree with You ! Vernor Reid used to use 81 X in the bridge ! I love ceramic pickups because they have a lot of clarity, dynamics and punch on the mids ...so 500T forever, except for Retro Active set because does it, but is absolutely noisless !
I red on EMG website that Jim settled on a set that gave him everything he loved from the 81/60 with the added benefits and versatility of the Retro Active design. According to my ears, JR's "Daemonum" does it !
Nice video and editing, do you think it would be worth if I put EMGs in my 2019 Epiphone Standard Pro?
hi! great channel ! are you still in touch with jim ? really like the interview and jim look like really nice guy ! really hope for more video :)
I like prefer sound of the 81/60s in the mix but I like the new ones better isolated
Metal voodoo child. Sign me up
just put them in my black Jim Root Strat - love them and agree w. you
Hey there, Did u just unplug the 81/60 and plug in the daemonum on the Jim root strat since it already has the EMG wiring or do u have to rewire?
Awesome, fat and crunchy pickups really with low end
The new ones all the way. Because of the looks of course.
Yeah they just look so sick
Nearly no difference at all, sounds the same as the rest of the EMG family. Maybe a tad more output but it doesn't have any of those characteristics you get with passives. Doesn't mean that they sound bad, don't get me wrong. But they sound like every other EMG pickup. So my opinion is, that if you think about swapping your EMGs for another EMG set: Don't do this and stay with your EMGs you already have. Or if you want a passive sound with dynamics, then get the hell passive pickups!
I think I like the 81 better, LOL. It sounded a little more focused. I personally don't find the 81 that hot to begin with (compared to something like a Duncan Distortion or Black Winter), so I don't know if I'd dig the Daemonums, considering you mention they're lower output.
They are lower output,I did not like them .i took them out and put back my emg 81.the daemonum are missing the chug factor especially if you are in standard or e flat .
I prefer the 81. Been using it since 1987
I'm thinking of buying a set of daemonum's to replace a 60/81 set. Because I want to use that guitar (LP) for a wider range of musical styles than just metal. The only question I have about the daemonum's is how they behave in standard tuning? Would you recommend these for standard tuning or should I look into other EMG pickups?
I wonder what these would sound like with the 24v mod?
Do you think the new Jazzmaster is worth $1399? I was planning on getting one but can't justify spending that much when I could easily get the USA Jazzmaster used for less than that.
Can the new pickups just be plugged into existing 81/60 wiring or are things different with the retro active type?
Yup yup just plug in and play!
I don't know if it's already been asked but what is going on with that pinch harmonic at 2.01 😅 I've gotta know lol
This didn’t convince me to swap out my emgs but I did convince me to put demanums in another guitar haha
Haha that works as well 🕺🙌
Hey man which emg fit did u use for the strat. I read they have 2 different sizes or something like that. I want to buy it for my strat.
Daemons have definitely way more « growl ».
Even on an iphone speaker your here it !
My favorite by far
Such a heavy mix tho 😝🤘🏻
Thanks boss!
Like the Roots. Considering putting them in a guitar. I'd like to hear them compared to the x series also.
Love the way u play
Hey thanks so much
