7 Tips for Better Time Management in Chess

  • Time management has always been one of the biggest difficulties for me in chess. Even in longer games, I play too slowly and often find myself low on the clock. But in the last year or so, I've made a point of working on my time management, and I've actually had some solid improvement in this area. These are the tips I try to keep in mind to intentionally use the clock to my advantage!
Shoutout to JJ Lang, who talks more extensively about some of these ideas on both the chessfeels podcast (ep. 12) and in their interview on the Chess Journeys podcast (ep. 51).

The past month, I achieved a rating of 1700 after being stuck in the 1200-1300 range for years. This progress was a direct result of following the advice in your previous videos. I appreciate that your videos are concise and to the point, without any clickbait. Thank you!

What exactly did you apply that you'd say elevated your game i.e. doing tactics and openings for an hour each, playing more games, etc?

@@justinchiluwe9301 Firstly, 1700 may not seem like a significant achievement to some, but for me, it is a major milestone considering that I only started playing chess two years ago with a rating of 300. I found her video, "How I Accidentally Went from 0-2000 in Chess in 2 Years," to be incredibly helpful, and I followed most of her advice to pursue my goal. One of her recommendations was to establish a training regime, which she demonstrated by dedicating three hours to chess practice. However, I have adapted it to fit my schedule and currently allocate one hour per day. I made a conscious decision to stop playing bullet games and instead focused on 10-minute games, limiting myself to just one or two matches per day. I learned the basic lines of the London system and French defense. I also dedicated time to analyze these games thoroughly. Additionally, I have started solving puzzles as frequently as possible. Another valuable lesson I learned is to never resign, even when faced with a seemingly lost position, because at this level, opponents often make blunders. Furthermore, I have come to understand the significance of time as a valuable resource, so I have adopted a more instinctive approach to my moves rather than overthinking them. Currently, my aim is to reach a rating of 2000. :)

@@justinchiluwe9301 My question exactly. Going up 500 points in one month after years of stagnation simply by watching a few hot-girl chess videos seems mighty suspicious. Personally, I don't believe it for a second. You don't really get better at chess by watching WFM Anna Cramling or smalltowngoose Kamryn videos, it is simply entertainment in between the serious studying that you would need to do.

@VISlONARY1 yeah, a bit suspicious. I started writing down my mistakes, analyzing my games, spending hours on tactics, doing deep dives on my openings and in the course of a month went up 250 then back down 150 elo. So a 100 elo gain, not bad but not 500

That's called "reinventing the wheel." The openings that are played by top players are the proven best openings. Notice that they don't invent their own unless they're just goofing off.

Good tips, but staying ahead of your opponent's clock time doesn't work in slower Classical chess. If you are playing a 90 minute game and your opponent is playing very quickly, like a blitz game, would it be wise to stay ahead of that player? No, you would be rushing and will probably make a mistake. Good idea for blitz though.
