Did you catch the detail though?
It slipped right by if you weren't paying attention.
The Southern political mentality wasn't just "slaves", but also consisted of a "despised poor white class".
This is the same as today. Poor whites, including white supremacists, think that they, and the white politicians are one group, which is fine with the white politicians.
But the fact is that white politicians use the poor white population's joint hatred of blacks as a smoke screen for the fact that the white politicians not only hate the blacks, but also hate the poor white class as well.
I've been saying this all along, how can hard working middle income and lower income people possibly think that Trump, a person who has never worked a day in his life, and who has zero legitimate traditional values of the "Christian" middle and lower income families, possibly believe that Trump represents them in any way?
Rich slave owners didn't identify with the poor white class back then (there was no such group as "middle class" back then), and in fact hated them, (color was relevant only relevant in HOW they exercised that hatred, vs black slaves), and it is the same today.
Trump hates poor people of all colors, but he needs their votes to be president. How middle and poor income whites don't see this is just staggering.
Once in office, Trump passes PERMANENT tax cuts for the rich, and TEMPORARY tax cuts for the non-rich.
Trump's Covid "stimulus" (Socialist welfare) package, gave non-rich families $1200, but gave the richest 1% a check for $1,200,000, plus trillions of dollars to rich business owners, (primarily white people), that didn't require payback or accountability, yet poor and middle income Trump supporters are in total denial of the fact that we are a Socialist nation, and the fact that Trump hates non-rich whites, just like the politicians back in the Civil War era.
It defies all comprehension that people can completely deny overwhelming facts and only see what they want to see.

I have Gary Gallagher’s Great Courses series of lectures he did on the American Civil War. Well worth seeking out.
And I agree: divisions persist to this day. That said, the same is true elsewhere around the world. Likely it’s a human thing.
And yet, as Shelby Foote pointed out, before the Civil War this country was always referred to as “these United States” (ie, plural). After the Civil War, we became the United States.

The civil war was not about slavery or racism. Was about taxes, the south wanted to trades his goods and import. The north wanted to protect his industry.
Economic disputes between the North and South existed even before the Revolutionary War, and things got even worse after 1828. This mean that the South’s only option was to buy from the North. The tax argument, presented in historical winner historiography was that the north payed more, but that is not the point. The point was THE taxes.
Another thing that is not discussed was about the nature and development of capitalism at that time.
Capitalism cant sustain without exploration. England for example had to dismantle India and Portugal's textile manufacture in order to industrialize. They had colonies for raw materials.
U.S had none of this and the solution was found in his own territory. Expansion and migration. The colonialism period.
U.S was organized in sections, north, south, pacific section they competed with each other.
To put it simple, the exploration of the south, like market reserve, was a must for capitalism development in US.
This lead to a breaking point.
When Lincoln invaded the justification was to "keep the union together".
He broke the pact of America foundation.
Only later after some consideration they found a better justification to this.

....Upon the left bank(the south) of the stream the population is rare; from time to time one descries a troop of slaves loitering in the half-desert fields; the primeval forest recurs at every turn; society seems to be asleep, man to be idle, and nature alone offers a scene of activity and of life.
From the right bank(the north)on the contrary, a confused hum is heard, which proclaims the presence of industry; the fields are covered with abundant harvests; the elegance of the dwellings announces the taste and activity of the labourer; and man appears to be in the enjoyment of that wealth and contentment which are the reward of labour.

Yes they did. The states of Connecticut and New Jersey combined had more slaves than ENTIRE South.
The first slave sold on the North American Continent was A black man, from Ireland, named Archer. Who owned a 300 acre plantation in New Jersey. When Archer purchased 4 Scotish women as slaves.
The earliest slaves, on the North American Continent was Scot and Irish POWs from Englands war with Ireland and Scotland.. The King of England, did not want to feed the POWS, SO,the king gave the POWs a choice: Either come to North America and pick Tea on his plantations in SC, or be hung?
England sold there first Scot and Irish POWs to the Cherokee. Before there was any AFRICANS brought to North America.

Of course they would. "Alone" in perpetuating the antebellum status quo, cornerstone of which was their 'peculiar institution'... However, on a political level his premise was totally unfounded to begin with, since the Union of the States was conceived by the founding fathers as perpetual and binding one: it was neither a league nor a compact. Hence, secession was by definition an act of rebellion, an act of aggression towards the very founding principles of a federal nation... And as ole Jeff would soon discover himself during the Civil War, the whole 'states rights' Vs a strong central government conflict would take its toll in their newly formed Confederacy. Not to mention that the CSA's own Constitution explicitly forbade any notions of secession. Quite ironic, ain't it? ;-)

But with the Northern States having the majority in population, thus held the majority, in the House of Representatives for the Northern States. That would DOMINATE over the Southern States Representatives and would not allow them to participate, in the LAW making PROCESS.

The only difference is a UNIFORM! .. How many wore Uniforms? And how many NEVER WORE UNIFORMS? I'll never tell! We were ALL AMERICANS and we still OUR! By 1863 Mr. LINCOLNS UNION was a coming apart. He was out of Funds and Out of Food. Illinois, Ohio and Indiana was sick of being Lincoln's Whipping boys for a War: So much so, that they wrote up secession Bill's in their respective states:And these three states united as the "NORTHWEST CONFEDERACY!" And they Secceded, They had already, removed their States TREASURIES, before the WAR and had taken it to Montreal, Canada. To be sure Abraham Lincoln had NO FUNDING FOR A WAR AGAINST ANY OF AMERICA'S PEOPLE: Over an event that should have been negotiated out, in the Congress. Neither of these three States had slaves.. it was against their States laws. True HISTORY..... This, garbage today is for a RADICAL Racist AGENDA to divide Americans.
If Robert E. Lee had not stopped the War .....to stop the killing... (Lee knew that the Southern Wealth that Abe Lincoln was TRYING TO STEAL was secure OFF SHORE.) If the war had lasted 90 more days. USA would been at a full blown Gorilla war fare. Northerns was coming South to join them.

and yet the Southern states seceded to ensure that slavery would not be outlawed by non-slave state. It's literally front and center in their declarations of secession. Also don't forget states like Maryland (slave but in the Union) were not allowed to vote to leave, habeas corpus was suspended and many pro-south leaders were held in jail without charge (to ensure that the state would not be able to follow the lead of the rest of the south).
People like you seem to forget that part though. It's not like the slave states that were in the Union were part of it willingly.

David Article I, Section 2, added three-fifths of “all other Persons” ‒ slaves ‒ to the number of free inhabitants of a state for purposes of representation. This clause, by boosting the number of representatives in Congress for the slave states, guaranteed political protection for slavery. The same three-fifths ratio boosted the representation of slave states in the Electoral College during presidential elections. The slave import limitation, Article I, Section 9, prohibited Congress from regulating the international slave trade until 1808, 21 years after ratification of the Constitution. Not only was Congress forbidden from regulating the transoceanic slave trade, but Article V of the Constitution explicitly forbids amending the slave import limitation, one of only two such forbidden matters in the whole document. Lastly, the Fugitive Slave Clause, Article IV, Section 2, guaranteed nationally, for the first time, the right of slave owners to pursue and reclaim their slaves anywhere throughout the land.
      - U.S constitution

Slavery today seems the fitst words spoken but was legal until 1863. IT was voted to eradicate slavery in 1792 but a Senator from New Jersey failed to show. The left today keep blacks in turmoil on voting. If they were to study the POC that was LBJ then they would see the light. When speaking of #BLM the Native American is never brought up. 40 million were murdered .There would be no blacks had they suffered the red man's fate
