I love these books. They form the pinnacle of my book collecting. I can't even begin to convey he amount of joy and peace I feel at my Suntup shelves. Right now, on the secondary, Suntup books are surprisingly inexpensive. It's a buyer's market and you can get some of the books I own for less than I paid. In some cases, like Imajica, for about half of what I paid. So I'm happy for those just getting started.
Yes! I actually mentioned that in the portion of the video where I talk about AEs. I later edited out because it seemed to muddy things up. I think the important thing is the pricing and limitation overview. Thank you for pointing it out and giving people that bit of info. I also updated the description with a note about CEs.
Thank you so much, this series is everything I needed and more! When getting into collecting it's so difficult to make decisions and you make it so much easier with your videos! I'm really grateful!
I'm so glad! I know it can be confusing since no two publishers behave the same. Once you get a book or two from a publisher, then you'll know what to truly expect. There are so many out there.
Very well done. Can't wait to enjoy the next one in the series. Don't know if it's possible but it would be awesome if you could get interviews with the publishers as well and how they came into thier publishing careers. I'm glad I get to learn more about these publishers. Thanks.
I'm actually going to post a long lost interview I did with Paul Suntup tomorrow. But if you're interested, Collectible Book Vault is doing a series of {written} interviews with various publishers. I don't have the URL in front of me, but I'm sure you'll be able to find it. Great stuff there including an interview with Paul Suntup.
Outstanding, Jeff. Very interesting, informative and comprehensive, with a lovely presentation of some beautiful books at the end. And you managed not just to cover the facts and logistics of buying from Suntup, but to show the craft and artistry that drives the passion we have for these books. Very well done indeed.
This was a cool video, thank you for the breakdown. Now I'm going to go about my life totally afraid that Suntup will release 5 digit costing Roman Numeral versions of my favourite books, haha.
Thank you for introducing me with Suntup. They are truly amazing. Just a shame that even the artist editions which I would like to buy are sold out quickly. Then on the second market they to expensive for me
Yeah I don't buy off the secondary, BUT there have been deals lately on certain titles. On others, yeah they get out of reach quickly. My advice to you is to be ready when the books go live. Tomorrow, the new release will be announced at 9am Pacific. Sign up for the newsletter and you'll be informed the moment ordering opens. OR just be at the site right on the dot and you'll be able to order. The artist/classic editions don't sell out that fast. You should have a few hours (in some cases days, and in others, they're still available on the website).
Although not my favorite selection of books from month to month, Suntup does produce the best books of any fine press publisher I've purchased from without a doubt.
I just lost my Suntup virginity with a pre-order of the Gormenghast trilogy "Lettered Edition" .... years of collecting Folio Society and Easton but most recently, I really got into Letter Press after buying a pre-owned Arion press book... I am SO mad that I missed my shot at ordering the Devine Comedy Lettered Edition tho... I came to the table few months too late!
Playing catch-up at the lettered tier is going to be costly! Though now is the best time for it. It's a buyer's market and you can find a lot of titles below retail. Make sure you join the Fans group on FB.
@@THEJEFFWORD thanks, I did... I'm doing same on the Arion Press front... I just acquired a new (old stock) copy of Don Quixote owned by Andrew Hoyem as well and signed by him.. Now, I'm on the lookout for a Lettered Edition Suntup Devine comedy once they start to ship... I expect to pay a major premium.
Hahahaha I actually slurred "similarities" inexplicably. And I didn't have one drop of alcohol. This video was a struggle for me for some odd reason. I scripted it and filmed it the first time and it took 51 minutes to film. About two minutes into filming, my mic cut out and I had no idea. So the remainder was completely silent and unusable. I filmed it again--this time with the script and the benefit of a "rehearsal" take and I still struggled to get it all in some order. When I heard the slurred "similarities" I thought maybe speeding up the track would fix it. It didn't. But it made me laugh and get over the whole annoyance with filing this video so I left it in. And thank you so much for the kind words.
Very well done. Quality aside, i just can't make big purchases like this very often. I have kept a little tab on imajica on the secondary, and found a couple listed by auction (mistake by the sellers). Made some bids on the first to try to drive up the price, and despite both ending at around 200 i still couldn't do it. If they did War of the Worlds or Princess Bride i might have a difficult choice on my hands.
Well, Suntup did do War of the Worlds. That one includes a whole other book of bonus content. ua-cam.com/video/NUbUpEhYTEI/v-deo.html Amazing stuff. Folio did Princess Bride.
I've never collected any Easton Press so I'd say it's a no from me on that one. But MAYYYYbe a FS video. I don't know. I only have a few and there are people who go a lot deeper into FS. I'll have to think about that one.
Shhhhhhh Actually, I wanted to add the huge generosity of Suntup, but I didn't want to make people expect generosity and I wanted to keep it simple, sticking to the basics. I indulged myself with the Butcher Boy story. I'm only human! :D
I have both the AE and the numbered Charlie and they are both incredible! Congrats on the score. I could do a Folio video, but I don't think I'd give enough of a picture for people new to the press. I've only got 4 titles from them. Though I certainly could make a video describing how I feel about what I have and how they differ from what I normally collect. And I might since a lot of people ask for Folio. Thank you for commenting!
I’m definitely gonna be diving into Suntup very soon. When you order one book they clearly take the utmost care with it. Have you ever ordered 2 in one order? Wondering how well they ship multiple books. I ordered a handful from folio society and one came dinged even with all their protection, but coming from the UK is quite a journey so I probably came out lucky with just one ding lol
I've ordered two in one order before. In that case, you'll get the famed Double Stack Box notecard and twice the foam. You can see the double stack box in my Red Dragon unboxing. With this link you can jump right to the part where I show the bottom part of the box. ua-cam.com/video/ZDnnOyPLBso/v-deo.html
@@THEJEFFWORD one of the many reasons I subscribed, straight to the answer and even a demonstration lol thank you sir! The Suntup shelf will start any day now!
certainly Suntup & Centipede are the dominant fantasy small presses at this time...... all the same must admit tho my nostalgic gaze drifts back to the likes of Arkham House, Dark Harvest, Scream Press & Donald Grant as regards top quality productions !
Donald Grant started the ball rolling for me. I learned about limited editions with art as I hunted the Dark Tower books. If you're fond of the presses of yesteryear, you should know that Phantasia Press has started up again. You might recall they did the very first limited edition of a Stephen King novel with Firestarter. Also they did the first edition of Neuromancer.
Great video, only quibble would be that Suntup is NOT the most limited small press. They have been putting out roughly 750-1000 AE, 250-350 numbered, 26 lettered, and about 8-10 Roman of select titles. Earthling routinely has smaller print runs, as does SST I think. Centipede also hardly ever releases 1000 of any title. Just sayin'
Yes, all of that is true. I should have made it clear that I was only thinking of the print runs in terms of single editions and not all editions of the same title. For example, the numbered edition print run is lower than almost all other print runs from other publishers. It's not an absolute, of course. I'm only speaking in generalities. But yes, when we compare title to title there are often more Suntup editions than CP or SST or Earthling.
I would, but I don't collect enough from them to go all that deep. I'll certainly think about it. Maybe I'll do a video putting a few publishers together and give a high-level view.
I am only interested in one single Suntup Edition, which is my favorite fictional book, The Time Machine. Whatever is the cheapest edition that someone will sell me.
I only see that one sold in sets with the other Wells titles. I've read my numbered edition and I must say the bonus materials were extraordinary. Suntup and Tim Harding did an amazing job on that one. Good luck finding a copy. You might need to buy the three book set.
@THEJEFFWORD After a bit of perusal online, there are a couple copies of "The Time Machine" for sale online. After I have time to save up, I will check again. Probably in February. In the meantime, I accidentally stumbled across a low-priced Suntup copy of Schindler's Ark and did buy it. I'm debating on whether to keep it or give it to someone as a Christmas gift. I may read it first and then give it to someone as a Christmas gift anyway.
Great idea for a series…look forward to more!👍🏻
Thank you Ron. I think up next will be Centipede.

Just wanted to add that when an Artist Edition is signed by the author, I believe that's considered a Classic Edition.
