I used to go to that Oasis a lot when driving on 294. It was the Ohare Oasis in Franklin Park. The last day it was open before it was torn down I too a picture in that same exact spot.
Took me a few watches to realize Caan is talking about being sexually assaulted in this scene, obviously that's what he's referring to at first, but the way he just breezes through, "then they jump all over me, do a bunch of things" while his eyes dart away, you can tell he can't bare to relive any of the details
It gets old but its worth restating until things improve. Movies need to be about something. Some sort of examination of life’s questions. Something people can hold onto throughout their life and remember how it made them feel or changed what they wanted to pursue. So much garbage that doesn’t even aspire to the above
people still make films like this. In fact, they guy who made this one released one last year and is writing another one right now. even if you don't like anything from the newer voices, the masters from 40 years ago are still working
The subtleties here are almost incomprehensible. Not only Caan's delivery, but his body language, his frowns, his eyes, his hands, his every gesture is absolutely real, raw and honest. One can only aspire to this level of performance. RIP man.
I watched Thief again over the weekend and now I hear the news.... Personally, I thought Thief was a better film than Heat and in no small part because of Caan and this here scene ; it really made you understand the character's drive and motivation for what he did in life. Even though the film ends with a "badass" shoot-out, the outcome is heartbreaking, because he aspired to a better life... the forces of fate had other plans ; he's destined to be a loner who merely survives in the shadows. R.I.P Mr. Caan.
@@786superman I watched the Arrow Blu-ray. I'm not sure if it's still in print, as I bought it years ago. Criterion also released it in the U.S. Not sure if that is still available, either.
The diner scene immediately reminds you of Heat (1995), and Frank's revelation of his dream postcard/collage reminds you of Max's picture in Collateral (2004).
Michael Mann loves his diner scenes and I'm glad he does. Briliant just brilliant acting by Caan one of the most affecting scenes I ever saw. Here is this thug and by the mid point you cant help but love the guy. It wouldnt have worked without Tuesday Weld they were both perfect.
What makes this one unique and great (for me) is that it looks like 'oasis' scene, rather than just a diner scene. Other tollway systems put restaurant business perched over motorways, right? !
I was never sure which tollway oasis they filmed this scene in but I used to try to convince myself that I had driven under it a bunch of times before they remodeled and tore the cafes all out back in the late 80s.
James Caan was Badass with a Capital B. Thief (this movie), Rollerball, The Godfather... when he was on screen, you knew he didn't mess around, and he even showed his comic chops with Elf. RIP, Jim. 😢
In this scene Caan's character is wealthy, and has already shown her that he's a psycho who's willing to use and threaten violence to get whatever he wants. Exactly the kind of guy a surprising number of women fawn over, in my experience
@@kennethg9277 Must be a primal instinct leftover from our caveman days - the biggest, baddest and boldest man got the best woman to continue the family with.
One thing i like about Michael Mann is he adds truth to fantasy not all fantasy like a cartoon because you sometimes want the bad guy to win considering his disposition what he's been through and wanting to make it right of course we know that's not how it works unfortunately but it's a great fantasy with truth but on rare occasions it can work out but my advice don't chance it!!! 7:19
I have to say that I just hated his character because his personal life aspects simply didn’t synch with his professional thief abilities. He was basically incompetent in his private life

Caan has said this scene is the one he's most proud of in his career. It's brilliant

So does Weld, she dismissively said that “things happened” when she was alone on a street corner in Bogota.
Nobody does diner scenes better than Michael Mann. What a beautiful scene!
You might like the scene in my movie Bet On Ben
The scene is so powerful. We don't make films like This anymore? Maybe I'm wrong. Thank God we can still watch this..

This film didn't get much fanfare even in its own time. Idiocy isn't restricted to any era of history.

legit my most favourite scene of two individuals talking and finding out who each and each other are. amazing, love it!
Just realized all Manns movies are love stories hidden in action.
That's what a real man is .

great scene. i can see where Mann repeated elements from this scene for Heat. Brilliant to and fro from James and Tuesday Weld.

What a great scene. My top James Caan film. RIP.
Great movie, he was excellent perfect role for a guy like this. Old style old school reaL man.
Amazing scene. Caan had the vision board before there were vision boards.

James Caan is untouchable!
Brilliant! Now I have to go watch the movie - not sure how I missed it when it came out.
Started checking out this film because I read it was a great neo-noir, and then I found out James Caan died last summer.
Beautiful. This is the romance of the real.

great scene but also he's absolutely unhinged
You can see why though, prison turned him into an animal
This diner scene reminds me of HEAT.
