- "The world is a bad place
A bad place
A bad place
A terrible place to live
Oh, but I don’t want to die”
“Reflections of My Life” by The Marmalade from their album, “Reflections of The Marmalade” (“Reflections of My Life” in the US), which came out in 1969 (1970 in the US) and featured Graham Knight on bass. The words, the music, and the melody combined to create a masterpiece of majestic melancholy.
Someone suggested this song a while back and I wish I could find the comment. I tried to locate it, but could not. The story, as I remember it, was that when the fellow was a young child he remembered being in the back seat of his Mother’s car and she would play this song over and over again as they drove around. That image really struck me. This song came out in 1969 when the Vietnam War was in the 14th year of its nearly 20 year run. I cannot remember if the boy’s father was away at war or if his memory came from a later time. In my mind, he was. If it was you who made the suggestion, please raise your hand.
This reminded me a bit of when I was young. My Mother raised my two sisters and myself completely on her own and things were never easy. To get right to the point, the main reason I never wanted to have children was because I knew I would never be able to make the sacrifices that my Mother had made for my sisters and me. She worked and she took care of us. There was little time or money left for much else. I used to wonder why she played “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart”, (such an obviously sad song) by the Bee Gees over and over again, but I guess I always knew.
Initially, I recorded this cover using another bass, but redid it immediately after with this one. For some reason I thought the “look” of this bass suited the song better. It doesn’t sound too bad either. It’s a, fairly recent, Guild Starfire which is considered short-scale @ 30 3/4”.
Here’s another unlisted version on played on the other Guild - • Reflections Of My Life...
Appropriate song for this year.
What a year. What a song. Kudos from Brazil!
As I was learning it, I thought the same thing.
Aye, and still it fits so well.
Still applies in 2023. Peace on Earth.
Had the feels today I had to listening to that moving bass line and heartfelt song.
Each time I listen to this ...it never fails to connect. It is beautiful.
It's a beautiful song, isn't it?
This was the very first song I played live on stage with my first band. I was on bass. My trusty old 1964 Hofner Violin bass. I was just 16 in 71. Still got the bass.
Very, very cool!
One of the most beautiful bass lines ever made.
It's a nice song, isn't it?
My Dad shared this song with me some time ago. He said it reminded him of when he was in Vietnam. All this time, I hardly noticed the subtle bass lines! Thanks for bringing the bass up front! I am sharing with my Dad - he will love it - him being a former bass player too!
Thanks so much for sharing! I hope you both liked it. And thank your Father for his service.
Again!
Hi Troy, hope all is well with health and family my friend!
Feeling very retro these 62year old days, lol
Thank you again for sharing the correct bass line!
I had missed a couple little somethings, lol!
Again, I hope all viewers in bass land will notice and pay attention to Troy‘s use of perfect dynamics and duration of notes -so important for a bassist not incessant slapping and what pedals I have -this is the key to being a great bassist which I still am trying to achieve .
What the hell I have nothing else to do now !
Troy you are certainly a treasure!
Jim
Chicago
We are well and hope you are too.

I was touched by this video. ❤👍👍
I subscribed to visit often. 👍👍👏👏
Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment.
I haven't heard this song in ages. Such a moving song! Thank You Troy for covering it,
It is, isn't it? Thank you, it was my pleasure.
Sensacional..
Que lindo esse som, esse timbre do baixo.... que som maravilhoso...
Lindo 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Maravilhoso.... bela performance
Show... BRAVO!!!
Muito obrigado Manoel!
Great job, Troy! I’ve always loved this song. “Masterpiece of majestic melancholy”, so true. I also like how lately it seems you’re doing more “bass only” bits at the end of the video. 😃
Thanks Jim! Haha... you like that, huh? Yeah, I'm not sure what the origin of the "bass only" thing was, but a lot of people seem to appreciate it.
TJH3113 🤣
I remember in my childhood sitting in front of the the sound system in the room while listen to it. Always very emotive for me this one.
Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for sharing you experience with the music Francisco.
This is one of those songs done in the happy key of G Major in contrast with its melancholy lyrics and singing. Great job on a busy bass line. Well done 👍
When I was looking up some info for the song I read someone's musings that mentioned that very thing. Thanks David.
I love that Troy. You have a beautiful soul that is reflected in your playing Troy. Along with your innate talent and preoous heart, makes your playing in a class of its own. thank you for sharing that beauty with us. :)
Aw, thanks so much, Marvine.
Great and underrated song/bassline. My grandpa showed me this years ago, he played bass in his band’s cover of this song at his high school graduation, I’ll be showing him this!
I'm glad you like it. Thanks for sharing your memory. I hope your Grandpa enjoys it.
I must say that bass is amazing! A great and warm song, with really groovy and flowing bassline. Cheers for the work man!
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@TJH3113 My pleasure man! Your covers are always well done!
Great song, great cover. This was out in my Jr. High days. Sometimes it's amazing to hear how great the bass lines were back in that era of pop and power-pop. This is some good s%it.
It is cool, isn't it? And thanks. I actually thought the bass line was a bit too busy when I started learning it, but it grew on me.
My beautiful wee son was killed tragically at his school.that was twelve.seven years ago he was aged five my brother took his life tragically in 2011 he was 48 years my mum passed away 2013 an my dad passed away 2016 so u can't imagine the comfort I get listening to your songs thanks so much for wat u do so brilliantly an for the comfort I get from wat u do beat may God bless you Stephen
Hi Stephen. I am so sorry for all of your terrible losses. I really wish there was something to do to take that pain away. I truly thank you for watching and taking the time to share a piece of your story with me. Peace be with you and may the memories of all your lost family members be a blessing to you for as long as you live.
Thanks so much for Ur kind words keep doing wat Ur doing its touches so so many hearts
Troy, Great job! I’ve listened to this song at least 50 times over the last year attempting to get the base line down.(Old percussionist here), I really appreciated the extra verse at the end. Hard to hear this song without losing control of ones emotions,
Thank you
Thank you Randy. I struggled a bit with the bass-line as well. It's a bit muddy and buried in the mix. I found a live clip or two that gave me some guidance. I hear you about the feels when listening to the song. I got them all the time while learning it.
You did this song justice man ! Wow !
I have loved this song for 50 yrs.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked it.
Just when I thought I'd seen all your covers wow great job loved it 👏
Thank you so much!!
A great classic song.
Excellent Cover as always Troy. ✌🇺🇸
It is, isn't it?
Thanks a lot!
Excelente ejecución, felicidades👏 👏 👏
Muchas gracias mi amigo
Wow how have I not heard of these guys? Very interesting choices in the bass line. Some of it made me think a bit of Robert DeLeo. But also of the Bowie song Ziggy Stardust. Thanks for sharing I love learning new music.
Again, I am very, very surprised at the number of people who have not heard this song before. I thought the song was sort of ubiquitous in American musical culture. Also, as I mentioned in other comments, I did not like the bass line when I first heard it. I thought it was way too busy and a bit sloppy (I think there are some minor timing errors in the song... maybe not the fault of the bassist). I looked up a live version and he played it, pretty much, the same, but cleaner and then it made more sense to me. Thanks for watching Tiny.
You're so smooth.
The Master ! 👍👍
And you are too kind. Thank you Tom.
Troy I’m delighted to hear one of my favourite songs played so beautifully. Good job x
Thanks so much Suzanne! Hope you are well.
Thanks for doing the solo ending. Really helps when trying to learn the song for us beginners.
No problem! I'm glad you found it useful.
Thank you so much for that, I heard it on the Radio today (oldies station ) LOL I heard the bass line so I quickly went to your site, that was Awesome ! That hit me right in the chest !! You play so fluidly, accurately, and exactly, very impressive. You are an Awesome Bassist/Musician !! Thank You. Peace.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment. Take care.
Excellent mate 👌 👏 👍
Thanks 👍
the man who created this bassline is a genius.
Yes, it's a fine bass line, but it took a while to grow on me. When I first started learning it I thought it was a bit too busy and, dare I say, sloppy. My opinion changed the further I got into it.
The Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life 1969 Decca. I remember when it came out but have not heard it in decades. Nice job...
I hope you liked it. Thank you.
Love this song.....love the bass line.....love that Bass
Wonderful...
Nice to see the Guild Starfire again! Sounding awesome as ever -- the bass and your cover.
Glad you liked it!
A quality bass line cover for a great song. Well done.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.
Beautifully done. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thank you very much!
I really enjoyed the way you played alone after the song faded. Please keep doing that in your vids bud. I just enjoy listening to you play....
Thanks! Will do!
Another top cover Troy. Sounds fab and that bass looks lovely. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked it. You too!
I'd totally forgotten this song existed. I don't think I've it heard since around 1972 (When I was 10) and never realised it had such a fantastic bass line. Mate your playing is effortlessly fluent and absolutely wonderful.
Glad I could remind you of it. Thanks so much for the very kind words.
There is some beautiful bass work in that song.
There is, isn't there?
I enjoyed reading these heartfelt stories while listening to you play. Thanks for sharing as I was scrolling UA-cam for a song to listen to this evening on my 65th birthday celebration. You’re the best!
Thanks for listening... and reading. Happy Birthday! I hope you find something a little more cheerful to back this one up with! Thanks again and take care!
Very cool bass and awesome playing. I've never heard this song but thought it was very melodic.
Thanks, I'm glad you found so much to like within the video. Take care.
Love this, man! Has always been one of my favorite songs and you certainly do it justice. Great!
Thanks, I'm very glad you liked it.
Great song to play it is my favorite one of 1969 and i still listen to it today.
Awesome! I hope you liked it.
Thank you so much.
Perfectly timed cover perfectly executed and beautifully played.
Thank you very much!
That was just beautiful Troy. It brought back fond and distant memories too. The I don't know which I like more, the simple melody or the complex bass. Awesome.
Thanks for listening, I'm very glad you liked it. As I mentioned in a couple of other comments, I really thought the bass-line was way too busy for the song when I first started learning it. I was sure the guitar player had picked up the bass and recorded it quickly. I looked up one of the few actual live videos of the original band playing it and, while he played the same bass line, it made much more sense to me. Thanks Geoff.
Great music e great performance .
Thank you very much.
Just gotta say you're a killer bass player and anytime I need to learn a part for my band I look for your vids first!
Aw, that was very nice of you to say. Thanks!
Always loved this song, especially as a bass player, but never played it. Thanks for a superb transcription and the background stories.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Epic bass man. Never heard this song but the bass line sounds pretty cool. 👍
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks!
Cracking bass cover cracking song choice ..top notch tbh love it👍
Thanks Davy!
ОТЛИЧНОЕ ИСПОЛНЕНИЕ!!! БРАВО МАЭСТРО!
Спасибо!!!
This song has a very special meaning to me.
Thank you on the highest level for doing this song. 👍👍
That's wonderful to hear. I'm very glad you liked it. Thanks.
I've never heard this song before. It's beautiful...and what an intricate and awesome bass line! Great cover! I grew up in some pretty dire circumstances too, so hearing about other people's experiences takes me back to those feelings of "why me...why us?" But it also makes me feel better that we got through it. We made it! Unfortunately not everyone does though...and I never, ever forget that. I never assume that I know someone's struggle.
Gotta mention too that it's nice to see some short scale love!
Wow, I'm very surprised to hear that, but I'm glad you finally got to hear it and am glad that you liked it.
Growing up poor isn't the worst thing. Growing up poor and unloved just might be. Fortunately, we were well loved and very well thought the difference between right and wrong. And, by "poor", I mean lower income, not destitute. Destitution was not as nearly big a problem in the 70's as it became in the 80's and beyond. One of the great lessons growing up underprivileged taught me was to take very good care of the things I "did" have.
I loved it .
So awesome.
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for sharing your story, this lovely song, your talents and that fabulous bass!
Thanks for reading, listening, and watching.
I loved watching you play it, beautiful song, but makes me feel emotional. :(
Brings back lots of memories of that time! I have to go find a party song to dance to right now. Hahaha
Thank you, Nancy, I think it has a similar effect on many people... even myself. Don't hurt yourself.
@@TJH3113 I'm sure you mean dancing! ;) hahaha (I can't be trusted sometimes)
@@SQCGirl yes, I definitely meant "dancing".
Well, that was worth a listen. Well done.
I'm glad you liked it.
Sent Chills through me ! 👍👍
Awesome! Thank you Tom!
Excellent pick on your bass-choice for this video Troy!!! That's a beautiful/classic looking bass!!! Anyway,I have to admit that this is the very first time I've ever heard this song!!! (at least, that's what I can recall!?!? Lol.) but I really enjoyed hearing it while watching You play it!!! Well done!!!
Despite me being a "70's" child.........I was on the cusp of the 60's decade if you will, but Yes..........like You........I'd definitely identify much more with the Bee-Gees song "How do You mend a Broken Heart",than with this one!!! Always LOVE reading your "Stories" that go along with the videos!!! :-)
Thanks. Yeah, it sounded like an "old song" and I think the Guild looks like an "old bass". That's how my mind works. I'm glad you liked it.
@@TJH3113 Thank-you,I did.......very much!!! :-)
Wow, never remember hearing this song before. That tone is awesome on your bass. Don't know why but something about this song reminded me of The Raspberries, must have been the descending bass line along with the harmonizing vocals. Very cool.
I'm surprised by the number of people who have not heard the song. I just assumed that most people had. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I can hear some similarities between this song and The Raspberries.
The Guild is perfect here! Thanks.
I thought so, though in early videos he's playing a Jazz bass.
Wow, The bass part is busier than I first remembered it. The fast box shape pattern over the D7 chord seems a bit of of place in this song to my ears. I probably would have played a descending line. Top Marks Troy.
I agree. When I first started learning the song I thought the bass line was a bit awkward, but it grew on me. Thanks!
Thankyou for sharing your story Troy xx
Thanks for reading about it, Sue. Hope all is well with you and the family.
Just a great song and the bass line really carries the song along perfectly. Wonderfully done Troy 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻. Thanks for the posting.✌🏻
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks a lot Wilbert.
You are truly an amazing person Troy. Thank you for sharing your heart. What a beautiful song filled with so many stories in our generations past. Thank you as always, this song is going to be fun.
Thanks Tommy.
Awesome playing as always.. and thank you for the story of growing up.. I see there’s other people that had similar circumstances as did I..having lost my mom a year ago..it really hit me hard when I thought back at all the sacrifices she made for myself and 2 brothers..have a great day sir..
Thank you. Sorry for your loss. You too Drew.
I have recently discovered this song. While I'm binge watching versions, I found your video, being a bass player you were on my radar and love that you played. Thank you. BTW, I love the burpy tone of the guild. I have a very unique rickenbacker, if you're interested in learning about it reach out. It's a fun story.
It's a beautiful song, isn't it? I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I was surprised by how mean this bass could sound. Sure, I'd love to hear about your Ric. You can drop the story in any comment section of any video and I'll respond to it. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not a fan of Rickenbackers... not that I haven't owned 5 or 6.
Always loved this song and hoped you would someday cover. Great job and thank you!
Awesome. Thanks!
Well played as always! A big hug from Brasil!!
Thank you very much. Big hug from New York!
Amazing cover sir. Nailed it!
Thank you so much.
@@TJH3113 sent the cover to my dad who introduced me to the song originally and he loves it as well. take care.
Sad song, but well played as always. Thank you ;-)
Thank you too!
Absolutely mesmerizing cover. Never heard this song till today, but wow is it great. And that bass line is beautiful. Fantastic job as always! Always love seeing you play.
Also that story about your childhood was very moving. Sorry to hear things were tough.
Thank you. Again, I'm surprised at the number of people who have not heard the song before. I'm happy to have brought it to your attention. Thanks again. Yes, they were tough, but we always had food, clothes, a roof over our heads, and a Mother who loved us. It's sad to think of how many there are among us who lack all of those things.
JUST BEATIFUL, EXCELENT, (MASTER) CONGRATULATIONS FROM SALTILLO, COAHUILA DE ZARAGOZA, MEXICO
Thank you very much!
Top demais parabéns 👏👏👏
Muito obrigado!
Amazing cover, only heard the song recently when my dad put it on, hadn’t heard of the band before even though they are Scottish.
Thanks. I wonder if they had any other hits?
I’m not sure if they had any as big as this to be honest, will try and find out and let you know if I do
@@TJH3113 They did a cover of The Beatles OBLADI OBLADA before this song. I think it was No 1.
Great choice! Haven't heard this one in a long, long time. Now that you brought it up, I just went and bought it from iTunes:). One thing is for sure, you always seem to
choose songs that I didn't quite take notice of with all the details of the baseline. Back then I ears were focused more on the guitars because that's what I was interested in playing. Now that bass has taken over my life, I now understand why the songs I loved most back then were because of the bass lines and at the time, I didn't even realize it. These days it's so much fun learning to play many of those bass lines. Thanks Troy:)
Thanks Lori. As I've said in a couple of other comments, I actually thought the bass-line was a bit busy and, dare I say, sloppy when I first started learning it. I assumed the guitar player picked up the bass and rattled it off. I found an old live clip and it made more sense to me.
I really enjoyed this, thank you!
I'm so glad! Thanks, Jeff.
Good to see this bad boy get out of the case~!
That bridge sounds really nice (^_^)
I believe this is the first time I've used it since you put the bridge on. The replacement bridge is a great improvement. Thanks again Tim! I did another song with it while I had it out - "Un Dun" by The Guess Who.
@@TJH3113 THAT is a magnificent Guess Who song ! I have always been a big fan of their stuff. They had such range.
@@ZeroMod Yeah, someone suggested it and I thought it sounded interesting. Hard to believe it's the same band who did American Woman.
Great cover very enjoyable
Thank you very much Sue!
Nicely done 👍
Thank you.
Best Bass Cover of this song. This song tells you exactly what's going on in the world...and it's timeless because there's always sorrow in the world.
Thank you kindly.
Big truth!
Nice bass Troy, sounds great.
Thank you, Joe.
I haven't heard that one in awhile...groovy!!!
I hope you liked it.
Nicely done and appropriate for the times. I actually tried one of those basses at the Paramus Guitar center before the lockdown. Not bad at all
Thanks... I think so too. I love it, just try not to spend too much time on it as I'm afraid my hands might get used to the scale length.
Brilliant!
Thanks!
Thanks for playing extra at the end without the music. That was helpful! You sound great ☺️
Glad it was helpful! Thanks, Nancy.
Great tone!!
Thanks!
Fantastic
Thank you

1969, south east Asia,..... wow, the memories
Dear Mr. Troy: if my life could be recorded as a movie soundtrack, this song would be the second or third in the list. I heard this a billion times when I was a first grader, thanks to a hippie aunt of mine. Once again, thanks a lot!
PS: I decided to practise my English instead to write to you in Spanish. 🤘😁
Nice english!, it's my native language and I still mess it up everyday. Good job to you and Troy!! Thanks for sharing the story Troy.
Aw, I hope the songs in your soundtrack get happier as your life has gone along. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. And thank for your efforts but feel free to comment in any language you choose. I have no problem using GoogleTranslate. Take care!
@@TJH3113 Well, I'm 43 and my life has not been bad. However, the last 20 years of "socialism" in my country are like in Apocalyspis Now: the horror, the horror. Once again, thank you very much for your time and basses!!!
Felicidades !! excelente bajeo !!
¡¡¡Muchas gracias!!!
I am a bass player and I like your videos a lot.
Awesome! Thank you, Andreas.
Cara você manda muito bem, PARABÉNS
Muito obrigado!
Great Job Troy! I did this cover myself! The bass part was fun to play 😎
Thanks! It sounds great!
It reminds me Paul McCartney's melodic bassline.
Amazing.
Yeah, I can hear some similarities as well. They had a hit with "Ob-La-Di..." before they released this, so they were definitely influenced by The Beatles.
Wonderfull
Thanks
Try going into the video on youtube and boosting it to 1.25 percent replay. It makes it a little better and sounds good there too. I remember this song when I was a kid and thought it needed to be a little faster. Good Job!
Thanks for the idea. I'll have to try it out. Thanks.
