I use a RPI 4 8g as a desktop replacement running ubuntu mate and it works great. Of course, I've made an extreme overclock with passive and active cooling and it's as solid as a rock (arm freq 2300; gpu freq 750; gpu mem 500; over voltage 15).
What I don't understand why alternate variants of Ubuntu such as Lubuntu which is essentially a re-spin of Ubuntu which uses the Lxqt desktop which is based upon the qt which it share with the KDesktop environment . Or another variant that I commonly prefer by a long shot over pure Ubuntu Xubuntu which is essentially a Ubuntu with the Xfce desktop environment

Does it automatically expand the partition to the whole SD card? What clock speed are you running? Did you set a higher clock speed?

I hope that Raspberry Pi 5 will have a big leap in performance.
