That sign "Hank you're the Greatest" was mine that I lugged to the Louis Botha airport in Durban. I still remember Bruce Welsh grabbing Hank's arm and pointing it out so he could focus his movie camera on the sign. Lifelong Shadows fan.

Hi Storm. You must have been to their concert at the Playhouse in Durban in 1961. Do you remember seeing them use Vox AC-30's on that occasion? Some people say that they used Gibson Amps. I am sure they used Vox amps at the Playhouse in 1961

I was lucky enough to be signed to a publishing company run by Bruce Welch in the early 80s.
Bruce called me 'The other Cliff' which pleased me no end.
During the cold and snowy winter of 1980, he asked me where I was going for Christmas. Being a vague 19 year old, I said that I might go to Manchester to be with my parents ,or perhaps Dundee with my pals, or maybe stay in London.
Looking back he must have thought I was living rough. I did look like a punk!
He very kindly invited me to have Christmas with his family .
As it happened I went to Manchester, and on Christmas Day, where my Mum (a huge Cliff Richards fan, natch) answered the phone . It was Bruce Welch wishing me a happy Christmas! She was thrilled. RIP Mum.
40 years later, I will never forget Bruce's kindness.Fame and guitars aside, these are really good people.

At age 14 in 1966 I chose Apache as my solo song at the National Music Association competition in Santa Ana Ca. I was scared out of my wits onstage but still managed a AAA and a tiny but VERY important trophy! Thanks to Doug Torres my teacher and his wonderful Mom Mary who is alive at 100 and a Rosie the Rivetor I discovered 45 years later. Also thanks to my parents Bruce and Virginia for the lessons and support. Still have stage fright......

Can't believe it, i'm so thrilled to see them back again in 2020!! I heard of Bruce Welch's Heart issues... thinking, oh no, not him. It's sad that Jet Harris & Tony passed by, but for Jet I believe it was just his time or something. But to see Cliff, Hank, Brian AND Bruce back.... Bruce still plays rhythm like he's 20.... best and probably fastest rhythm guitar player I've ever seen. I'm really Happy the guys are still there alive and well. They are my heroes, their music saved my life during a very long severe depression.... I'll always embrace them and always be thankful for what they did.

Thank God that Hank Marvin is still with us. His Guitar tunes took us to heavens. Still those golden greates of shadows (almost 20 songs) are remaining as evergreen and everlasting melodies. I enjoyed shadows during 70s and 80s a lot. Still I use to play their instrumental music very often as they are pleasurable part of my life. Hats off to shadows. I pray God to give them long life and appoint them as musicians of his Heaven later when He call them.

Hitting the hit parade where it really hurts!(lol) I was there! Those were the days. Hank actually gave a concert at my school. Probably 1959. I played in bands for years. A few record contracts . Got nowhere! Hey we can't all succeed! I stopped playing guitar a couple of years ago, but I still sing. I have recorded two hundred songs of many genres, just for fun. The best thing: I have three wonderful daughters who all sing! I have never heard them sing together!

What a fantastic trip down memory lane. Hank and the Shadows and Apache made me want to pick up guitar all those years ago. At 70 years of age I now have my Fender Fiesta Red Strat and have played Apache and Wonderful Land many, many times at gigs over the past twenty years or so. Listening to my hero's brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so, so much Hank and Bruce. I don't think there will ever be another group that will generate such influence and long lasting devotion as these guy's.
If and when I go to heaven I hope St Peter will let me organise a 'Shadows appreciation' society - Fiesta Red Strat required, amplifier negotiable.

As a USA resident, my latent passion for guitar instrumental music was originally awakened in 1960, at the age of 12, by the The Ventures’ “Walk, Don’t Run” and I was instantly hooked. It’s the main reason I took up learning to play the guitar at that time. It wasn’t until several years later that I became aware of the Shadows as more than a backing band for Cliff Richard, even though by then I was already playing The Ventures version of “Apache”. When I finally heard the Shadows as a group in their own right - WOW! I became a fan that same day. As good as the The Ventures were, the Shads’ music sounded so much more refined, with a subtle complexity that totally differentiated them from The Ventures. I continued to be a fan of The Ventures as well as The Shadows throughout my life and, later in life, even struck up a friendship with The Ventures original lead guitarist, Nokie Edwards. But to this day, when I need a guitar Instro fix (which is quite often) I find myself listening to my Shadows collection more than any other guitar instrumental group. I can’t quite put my fingers exactly on what makes The Shadows’ sound so identifiable, as The Shadows, but it is. Kudos to the group and the individual members, for a great sound, and thank you to them for all of the listening (and playing) pleasure they have given me since I first discovered them about 57 years ago.

Absolute Legends and each a uber talented musician. Hank's guitar sound was so unique and influential. Love how Bruce is the self proclaimed custodian of that '59 Strat . Does that thing sound KILLER unplugged all these years later. A priceless part of British musical history. How many lead singers would encourage their backing band to go out solo and do their thing because they were so talented - Cliff Richard a true Class Act. Timeless Music..........................

The first Strats were made with black ash and then alder both which have good tonal qualities. Ash was best but hard to paint due to the grain. I have built a few and using Custom Shop 54s pickups you can hear what Strats originally sounded like. Twang to thick and as good as buckers then add overdrive, and you have a guitar for life. Wood does make a difference in electric solid body.

In 1961 I was 13. I went to Public school, St. Bees in a remote corner of Cumberland. My first term, we had a small record player, owned by one of the boys. We played all the hits I seem to remember some of them, picked from an American list:
Tossin' and Turnin' - Bobby Lewis
    Michael - The Highwaymen
    Crying - Roy Orbison
    Runaway - Del Shannon
    Wheels - String-a-longs
Take Good Care of My Baby - Bobby Vee
    Running Scared - Roy Orbison
Dedicated to the One I Love - The Shirelles
    Last Night - The Mar-keys
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles
Where the Boys Are - Connie Francis
    Travelin' Man - Ricky Nelson
The Boll Weevil Song - Brook Benton
A Hundred Pounds of Clay - Gene Mcdaniels
On the Rebound - Floyd Cramer
Portrait of My Love - Steve Lawrence
Quarter to Three - Gary "U.S." Bonds
Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp,Bomp)? - Barry Mann
    Calendar Girl - Neil Sedaka
    Little Sister - Elvis Presley
    Blue Moon - The Marcels
I don't know why but I do - Clarence "Frog Man" Henry
    Runaround Sue - Dion
    Surrender - Elvis Presley
I Love How You Love Me - The Paris Sisters
The Way You Look Tonight - The Lettermen
Stand By Me - Ben E. King
Hats Off to Larry - Del Shannon
(Marie's the Name Of) His Latest Flame - Elvis Presley
I've Told Every Little Star - Linda Scott
But also, It might as well rain untill september, In an English country Garden... plus loads of British hits, Helen Shapiro, Eden Kane, Cliff Richard, Acker Bilk, John Leyton. Plus, I can't see the wonderful Bobby Vee.
    Happy Days.
We managed to get the Housemaster to give us a wonderful Huge music center. The first record played was 'The Young Ones'...That Boom, Boom, 'The Young ones...' lives with me still!
    John

I'm 75, I grew up with The Shadows starting with Apache, I always loved the harder edged material they did, finishing with Flingle Bunt. It never occurred to me for decades that they never wrote Apache, the most haunting instrumental number ever. (I do love their version of 'Sleepwalk' as well) But gradually the truth emerged. Even in this tribute his name is hardly mentioned and only as a superfluity. Jerry Lorden is his name and, like me, he never got the acclaim he deserved. (I'm an undiscovered modern poet.) You should listen to his single called 'Who could be bluer than me?' Freely available on UA-cam. He also recorded his own version of Apache that never got airplay at the time either. He died a broken man as I've often prayed to do to escape the deadly sense of hopelessness that accumulated failures engender in the human psyche. I think he should be called the 5th Shadow. He also wrote 'Wonderful Land' and Atlantis I think.

Rock On! Completely delightful. I was only 8 in 1959, and growing up in rural Iowa, so most of this is new to me. I love Apache, of coarse, but knew nothing off its origins. So nice that there appears to have been so little acrimony in their professional lives, and the support of Cliff Richards is amazing, knowing of the big egos in the industry. Thanks, BBC!

HOW have had it found the way to the souls of such young men ? It was a miracle. This music made part of my life. It tought me to move . To dance. Cliff have made me to sing , which made some girls to fall in love with me. These young man inspired millions. They made life and the world worth of loving.
