That sign "Hank you're the Greatest" was mine that I lugged to the Louis Botha airport in Durban. I still remember Bruce Welsh grabbing Hank's arm and pointing it out so he could focus his movie camera on the sign. Lifelong Shadows fan.
Hi Storm. You must have been to their concert at the Playhouse in Durban in 1961. Do you remember seeing them use Vox AC-30's on that occasion? Some people say that they used Gibson Amps. I am sure they used Vox amps at the Playhouse in 1961
Very nice to read this i remember the (your) sign in the documentairy, iam of younger ‘69 age and i can become very emotional listening to the vocal guitar sound of the shadows, around 2009 i have been to the final tour in Amsterdam, it was outstanding beyond any imagination so good. Thanks for pointing it out Storm
I was lucky enough to be signed to a publishing company run by Bruce Welch in the early 80s. Bruce called me 'The other Cliff' which pleased me no end. During the cold and snowy winter of 1980, he asked me where I was going for Christmas. Being a vague 19 year old, I said that I might go to Manchester to be with my parents ,or perhaps Dundee with my pals, or maybe stay in London. Looking back he must have thought I was living rough. I did look like a punk! He very kindly invited me to have Christmas with his family . As it happened I went to Manchester, and on Christmas Day, where my Mum (a huge Cliff Richards fan, natch) answered the phone . It was Bruce Welch wishing me a happy Christmas! She was thrilled. RIP Mum. 40 years later, I will never forget Bruce's kindness.Fame and guitars aside, these are really good people.

My dad used to play apache, dance on, peace pipe, kon tiki when i was a kid. Now im 32 and i listen to their greatest hit daily during covid19 lockdown n now when i get to work. The Shadows helps me get thru difficult times n brings out the happy feeling inside.=D

It's sad that Jet Harris & Tony passed by, but for Jet I believe it was just his time or something. But to see Cliff, Hank, Brian AND Bruce back.... Thank God that Hank Marvin is still with us. His Guitar tunes took us to heavens. Still those golden greates of shadows (almost 20 songs) are remaining as evergreen and everlasting melodies. I enjoyed shadows during 70s and 80s a lot. Still I use to play their instrumental music very often as they are pleasurable part of my life. Hats off to shadows. I pray God to give them long life and appoint them as musicians of his Heaven later when He call them.
Absolute Legends and each a uber talented musician. Hank's guitar sound was so unique and influential. Love how Bruce is the self proclaimed custodian of that '59 Strat . The first Strats were made with black ash and then alder both which have good tonal qualities. Ash was best but hard to paint due to the grain. I have built a few and using Custom Shop 54s pickups you can hear what Strats originally sounded like. Twang to thick and as good as buckers then add overdrive, and you have a guitar for life. I was only 15 in Baghdad when I heard the Shadows for the first time playing Apache. I was mesmerised by the sound of Hank Marvin's guitar. Soon after I bought my first guitar and after nearly 2 years I found a guitar teacher and started taking guitar lessons. Really annoying that the sound cuts out in several places but thanks for a fabulous upload none the less. The Shadows were great musicians individually but collectively were SENSATIONAL. I loved them as soon as I got to hear their music when I was a kid and still do decades later.
I remember years ago, Hank appearing on Blue Peter. It was years after the heydays , but he played Appache with such joy, his face was radiant. I will never forget it. You would have thought he'd only just made it up. Truely amazing people.
I saw these fellas at the assembly rooms in Derby when I was a kid!! My dad took me and my mom and I got so excited I was sick when they played don’t cry for me Argentina! So my dad who is a life long fan missed half the show looking after me!!! I love the shadows and I love my dad!! I hope I can make it up to you one day dad!!! .... 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏽👍🏽😘
Thank you the BBC, The Shadows, (even Cliff Richards) for bringing a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. So many precious memories of happier times amid the CV-19 doom and gloom.
thankyou for this excellent documentary, my teenage years were spent listening to their music. great to see they are still in good health and sounding as good as ever.
@@SteveReynoldsGuitarist indeed steve , the bands in new zealand including one i was in in 1963 all copied their style until the beatles and beach boys, and recently a group of older musos i saw did an hour set of their instumentals
Many thanks to Steve Reynolds for uploading! It's a great experience! I think anyone who loves Shadows should see this movie! 60 wonderful years! Congratulations to Evergreen Shadows! Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett! Greetings from Hungary!
A wonderful trip down memory lane. They look absolutely amazing, can’t believe they’re 80, and long may they all continue to enjoy their lives and music. Thank you for all those years and the great memories.
Saw you at Leeds Grand Theatre twice Hank. I can remember me playing Apache at the age of 14 with my older brothers group in working men's clubs in Leeds. He bought one of your old Amps with the correct documentation!! I'm now 63 & a bit, My Brother is approaching 70 & still playing your stuff!! & may I add - not too badly!!
I’m almost 70, got my first guitar at age 12 when my family was stationed in Germany. Have tried to tell so many fellow Americans about The Shadows and Cliff Richard in those pre-Beatle days, this excellent doc will certainly help! BTW, listen to that rare Beatles instrumental, “Cry For A Shadow” to understand the mark they made!
I also am nearly 70. My first concert was Cliff and the Shads at the ABC Croydon, London in 63. The Shads blew me away more than Cliff. Their music has stood the test of time. It still sounds great.
What a fantastic trip down memory lane. Hank and the Shadows and Apache made me want to pick up guitar all those years ago. At 70 years of age I now have my Fender Fiesta Red Strat and have played Apache and Wonderful Land many, many times at gigs over the past twenty years or so. Listening to my hero's brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so, so much Hank and Bruce. I don't think there will ever be another group that will generate such influence and long lasting devotion as these guy's. If and when I go to heaven I hope St Peter will let me organise a 'Shadows appreciation' society - Fiesta Red Strat required, amplifier negotiable.
If you go to heaven ? Eric you are going to heaven . Jesus has made it all possible for you and may hand you that red Strat with a big smile . God Bless You My Friend !
Thanks so much for 50 years of great entertainment and I still try to play like Hank, I see Hank and Bruce when I and my mate Paul slipped through into EMI recording studio I was thrilled to bits I was 14 years old
A couple of months back the 17 yr old that works for me said " Oh my God! I just found out that Hank Marvin was a real person! - I thought it was cockney rhyming slang for being hungry!" The legends live on in so many ways...
Haha, I'm well over 80yrs and still playing the Shadows, apart from seeing them live in Britain, Australia & New Zealand, The greatest pleasure of my life would have been " Hank" inviting me down to his rehearsals for 3 hours, He has a sense of humor Cos when I gave him my Guitar pick & said "Hank, I play a bit of guitar too", he fell over laughing. A fun time was had by all,,,, (Gib UA-cam)
Steve Reynolds Thank you! What a great documentary! 22:46 love the way it sounds. Have you noticed they're smiling 99% of the time? Enjoying doing what you love most doing, and thus also bringing joy to others, and more, making good music, that's what makes the art of living. Blessed The Shadows and all great musicians and thanks forever.
THE SHADOW , lo mejor de los años 60s . Y su cantante Cliff Richards , y sus muchos éxitos . Grandes por siempre . Desde Chile , Sud América . Los amo .
I learned a great bit about what MADE the Shadows. As an American, I learned just as much about Cliff Richards as an iconic British Rocker. THANKS for posting!
Hitting the hit parade where it really hurts!(lol) I was there! Those were the days. Hank actually gave a concert at my school. Probably 1959. I played in bands for years. A few record contracts . Got nowhere! Hey we can't all succeed! I stopped playing guitar a couple of years ago, but I still sing. I have recorded two hundred songs of many genres, just for fun. The best thing: I have three wonderful daughters who all sing! I have never heard them sing together! Good to see Hank and Bruce.
Mother’s Grace The unbeatable Shadows …. I grew up listening to them…. God bless you all guys🎸🎸🎸 Thanks to my brother Dr Sukumar for sharing this wonderful link 👍😊🙏💐
I actually grow up lessoning to shadows in my early teens.i,m quite sure that I’ve lesson to every song they ever wrote from there start.this is my music,it’s a part of teenage life. I can look back on the guys that made the sixties .
I went to the 20 Golden Greats tour in Manchester. I saw them again a few years later but thats not why the gigs stick in my mind; I saw three bands in the one week that second time, I don't remember the first band of the week but I do remember the other concert Jeff Beck. To witness two totally different concerts Jeff Beck and his strobe show and the stage in semi darkness for most of the time and the full on bright lights of the Shadows. The audience for JB all jeans and t shirts and the audience for the Shadows lookng like they were going to the theatre. Both brilliant concerts for completely different reasons and both totally wonderful musicianship.
A BIG THANK YOU AS WELL TO JULIETTE READ of Leo's Den for the enormous input into this Documentary, who works very hard to keep us Shadows fans informed of new releases and every thing else connected to this Great Group. Thank you Juliette, Pat, John,James from a very grateful customer 🎸🎸🎸🎸
My God that was good to see. Loved those guys for 50 plus years.. got to get over to Perth just to shake Hanks hand and thank him for being part of bringing that great music to the world. Bless you boys.
Loved hearing this when I was a kid in the 1970s. Takes me back to the car journey from the West Midlands to the Welsh mountains each summer on the way to our family camping trip.
One of the most awesome, fascinating & nostalgic documentary of all times. WoW, WoW, WoW... SOme classic vintage footage and music history!!! Thank You BBC & Steve Reynolds. This is gonna go Viral..
In 1961 I was 13. I went to Public school, St. Bees in a remote corner of Cumberland. My first term, we had a small record player, owned by one of the boys. We played all the hits I seem to remember some of them, picked from an American list: Tossin' and Turnin' - Bobby Lewis Michael - The Highwaymen Crying - Roy Orbison Runaway - Del Shannon Wheels - String-a-longs Take Good Care of My Baby - Bobby Vee Running Scared - Roy Orbison Dedicated to the One I Love - The Shirelles Last Night - The Mar-keys Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles Where the Boys Are - Connie Francis Travelin' Man - Ricky Nelson The Boll Weevil Song - Brook Benton A Hundred Pounds of Clay - Gene Mcdaniels On the Rebound - Floyd Cramer Portrait of My Love - Steve Lawrence Quarter to Three - Gary "U.S." Bonds Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp,Bomp)? - Barry Mann Calendar Girl - Neil Sedaka Little Sister - Elvis Presley Blue Moon - The Marcels I don't know why but I do - Clarence "Frog Man" Henry Runaround Sue - Dion Surrender - Elvis Presley I Love How You Love Me - The Paris Sisters The Way You Look Tonight - The Lettermen Stand By Me - Ben E. King Hats Off to Larry - Del Shannon (Marie's the Name Of) His Latest Flame - Elvis Presley I've Told Every Little Star - Linda Scott But also, It might as well rain untill september, In an English country Garden... plus loads of British hits, Helen Shapiro, Eden Kane, Cliff Richard, Acker Bilk, John Leyton. Plus, I can't see the wonderful Bobby Vee. Happy Days. We managed to get the Housemaster to give us a wonderful Huge music center. The first record played was 'The Young Ones'...That Boom, Boom, 'The Young ones...' lives with me still! John
Great Doco guys. Love the Shadows. It brings back many great memories. We moves to OZ 49 years ago but still have a cupboard full of Shadows records. And even now play them in the car on a usb. Thanks again.
Really loved this documentary as it showed the Shadows in a completely new light for me. I never knew they had a vocal side to their talents and thought how superb their songs with John Farrar were. They deserved so much more success for this side of their work than they achieved in my view. Thanks for sharing.
Hank ( aka Brian Rankin) and Bruce (aka Cripps) started out as an Everly Bros-influenced duo..great voices, Bruce has a fine, clear tenor..they have, after the Everlys, always been my fave singing band..and they brought choreographed steps back from their US visit..in one of the early Rock&Roll movies, show band The Treniers feature that crossover step that we associate with the Shads. The Shads have always displayed sheer professionalism, polish.
Thankful that my grandfather played their songs on the stereo when I was little, these music are bringing waves of nostalgia to me and I wasn't even a speck of dust yet in the 60's...neither was my mother in fact..
My favourite group of the early 60s....wonderful melodies....Marvin must have inspired thousands of hopeful guitarists. A good affectionate retrospective documentary.
Good to see Leo's Den Music were consulted for this programme. Best company ever for everything Shadows and Cliff related. They've helped me out a lot in the past for my collection.
Hank always kept himself in good shape, Cliff had a lot of publicity about knocking tennis balls around with glamourous people but Hank was a far better player, playing for Radlett in the local league.
What a super group and what lovely guys the are today and what a lovely feel good program, i was 18 at the time and what a time to be a teenager, the best.
So nice to hear the "Old Guys" talking about the good 'ole"" times. I am still such a great fan of the Shadows at age 75! ....and still play their music regularly.....love 'em!.
How could it be put into mere words? Our young ears suddenly exposed to absolute mastership ? To an expression of reality that is called SOUND ? Where has it come from ? HOW have had it found the way to the souls of such young men ? It was a miracle. This music made part of my life. It tought me to move . To dance. Cliff have made me to sing , which made some girls to fall in love with me. These young man inspired millions. They made life and the world worth of loving.
As a USA resident, my latent passion for guitar instrumental music was originally awakened in 1960, at the age of 12, by the The Ventures’ “Walk, Don’t Run” and I was instantly hooked. It’s the main reason I took up learning to play the guitar at that time. It wasn’t until several years later that I became aware of the Shadows as more than a backing band for Cliff Richard, even though by then I was already playing The Ventures version of “Apache”. When I finally heard the Shadows as a group in their own right - WOW! I became a fan that same day. As good as the The Ventures were, the Shads’ music sounded so much more refined, with a subtle complexity that totally differentiated them from The Ventures. I continued to be a fan of The Ventures as well as The Shadows throughout my life and, later in life, even struck up a friendship with The Ventures original lead guitarist, Nokie Edwards. But to this day, when I need a guitar Instro fix (which is quite often) I find myself listening to my Shadows collection more than any other guitar instrumental group. I can’t quite put my fingers exactly on what makes The Shadows’ sound so identifiable, as The Shadows, but it is. Kudos to the group and the individual members, for a great sound, and thank you to them for all of the listening (and playing) pleasure they have given me since I first discovered them about 57 years ago.
Absolutely loved this program - Thanks Steve! After watching this 3 times, I located my Shadows vinyl LP's including the Marvin-Welsh-Farrar set (which are Great!) Now at front of my playlist. What great music, and good to see these guys in great shape! Cliff is unbelievable at 79. . .
Thank you for this, it brings back great memories, I joined the British Army in 1959 and this was the music of the day, we could hear the latest records on radio Luxembourg.
Jet Harris named the group. He told me that when I worked with him as a photographer in the 1980s in the UK. Its awesome to see this at the age of 74. Thank you BBC
I was at a show several years ago to Marty wild, jet Harris was also there I had a chat with him about various artists of his time, nice guy, but unfortunately he died not long after 😢❤
@@robwoodtbi Le meilleur était le regretté John Rostill, malgré toute mon amitié pour Licorice, Jet était excellent mais moins souple que John bien plus complet....Histoire de goût
What was not mentioned regarding the purchase of the Stratocaster was that although they knew that Buddy Holly played one, the guitarist who really inspired them at that time- and all other aspiring British guitarists, was James Burton who played guitar for Rick Nelson. The assumption was that James must play the most expensive Fender- the Stratocaster. In fact James played- and still plays the Fender Telecaster. Hank Marvin has admitted that had he been given the Telecaster by Cliff- he would have evolved into a very different guitarist- no whammy bar, and the Shadows would have had a very different sound.
Yip! However, it's quite surprising to see how few times that Strat appears in the (chosen) video-clips. What we see most is his Burns guitar, and the same for the other two -- a British "version" of the Fender brand, with names such as Burns Bison, and there ain't not no bisons in Sussex.
Got to see them and Cliff just a few years ago on (yet another..) farewell tour. Man, they were jumping around like kids! What a great band. And like Pete said - They were ours! How many of us picked up a guitar cos of them, I wonder!
It's thru the Shadows , that changed the music of rock n roll . Thank u for the extraordinary n unique style .I'm still playing shadows music on my guitar at 71 .Shadows will never die their style of music will live for ever

At least spell his name right; it is Sir Cliff Richard to you and he is a legend.
One of the most talented and influential bands. Thanks for the music and the memories guys.
thankyou for this excellent documentary, my teenage years were spent listening to their music. great to see they are still in good health and sounding as good as ever.
It was a great documentary and the music will live on forever!
@@SteveReynoldsGuitarist indeed steve , the bands in new zealand including one i was in in 1963 all copied their style until the beatles and beach boys, and recently a group of older musos i saw did an hour set of their instumentals
Wow, no word to exprime what I feel, the 6 strings of this "legendary" Fiestared Stratocaster changed my/our life for ever... thank you so much...
GOOD MEMORIES, I CRY A LOT WHEN I LOOK AT THIS VIDEO, MISS THOSE YEARS
Just simply the best, unforgivable humans at a time when the world needed inspiration. thanks guy's.
There is one thing about The Shadows I love is there sense of humour and musicianship.
The Shadows! My first encounter with the electric guitar sounds!! What a revelation!
This really brought back beautiful memories. Absolutely l💘ve The Shadows. They were and still are an inspiration to any guitar enthusiast. The best.
One of the best British bands even up to today. Thanks for this enjoyable upload. 🥁🎸🎸🎸
The best.
A wonderful trip down memory lane. They look absolutely amazing, can’t believe they’re 80, and long may they all continue to enjoy their lives and music. Thank you for all those years and the great memories.
When Gilmour, Townsend and May ring praise then you know the Shadows are legends!
You missed the h out of Townshend. Pete would be mortified lol
Thanks for that great music . Iam 82 and still.playing your music❤
Now tell him go buy a strat👍🏻
Starvin' for good music?
It still is, though I'd dispute the cockney part. We used to say it in Scotland.
I wonder if he's ever said it when he's hungry. 🤓
Haha, I'm well over 80yrs and still playing the Shadows, apart from seeing them live in Britain, Australia & New Zealand, The greatest pleasure of my life would have been " Hank" inviting me down to his rehearsals for 3 hours, He has a sense of humor Cos when I gave him my Guitar pick & said
"Hank, I play a bit of guitar too", he fell over laughing. A fun time was had by all,,,, (Gib UA-cam)
I like that they all seem to see each other as equals. And have apparently kept a clean lifestyle through the years. Love their sound.
They popped the occasional paracetamol!
Great documentary! Thanks for putting this up Steve 👍
Wonderful group, I never get fed up listening to their wonderful music.
Mother’s Grace
The unbeatable Shadows ….
I grew up listening to them….
God bless you all guys🎸🎸🎸
Thanks to my brother Dr Sukumar for sharing this wonderful link 👍😊🙏💐
Love the doco just as much as their music Hank and Bruce were the magic always a favorite on the turntable, hope you live long lives in good health.
Wonderful The SHADOWS.....GO ON....forever.....
To ALL the great band....we are never tired to hear the old hit songs!

Apache, Wonderful Land, Atlantis and Theme For Young Lovers - among the greatest instrumentals of all time. So beautiful.
Has Hank got a portrait of himself in the attic?
The man spent 50 years hardly aging at all, and now still looks amazing at 80!
THEIR MUSIC KEEPS THEM🤩 THAT WAY!....////
I love these well-researched articles
Hank always kept himself in good shape, Cliff had a lot of publicity about knocking tennis balls around with glamourous people but Hank was a far better player, playing for Radlett in the local league.
Lo mismo pienso porque hank no engordaba ni envejecía
What a super group and what lovely guys the are today and what a lovely feel good program, i was 18 at the time and what a time to be a teenager, the best.
So nice to hear the "Old Guys" talking about the good 'ole"" times. I am still such a great fan of the Shadows at age 75! ....and still play their music regularly.....love 'em!.
I'm one year off 80 and I agree with you Andy. Absolutely the greatest group. Ever!
Thanks Steve for uploading. The Shadows....Legends.
THE SHADOWS YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED THE MOST FANTASTIC INSTRUMENTAL BAND IN THE WORLD.
Yes, much better than say Weather Report or the Yellow Jackets.
It's amazing how darn healthy these guys look !
that's what i thought, and i think, but not sure it's from this year 2020?
Its recent enough mate as hank marvin is 78 and they say in the film as he's approaching 80 so must be recent absolute 🙌
I'm gonna sixty in Dec this year, I've never known life without the Shads on the TV or radio , great documentary, thank you 🎶🎸🎵
'He looked even more like Buddy Holly than Buddy Holly did'. The funniest quote ever!
After watching this 3 times, I located my Shadows vinyl LP's including the Marvin-Welsh-Farrar set (which are Great!)
Now at front of my playlist.
I was at a show several years ago to Marty wild, jet Harris was also there I had a chat with him about various artists of his time, nice guy, but unfortunately he died not long after 😢❤
@@maggieboo8142 He had an alcohol problem for some time and I think it caught up with him
And he hardly gets a mention in this documentary despite being by far the best Shadows bass player.
@@robwoodtbi
Of course James Burton is mostly famous for being with Elvis from around 1970 (I might be mistaken) right until his death.
Geweldig, kijk regelmatig naar ze, heerlijke muziek!
Got to see them and Cliff just a few years ago on (yet another..) farewell tour.
Man, they were jumping around like kids!
What a great band. And like Pete said - They were ours!
How many of us picked up a guitar cos of them, I wonder!
Wonderful music, great memories. Loved these guys from the beginning and I still do
I saw him do an intent for that 'Vintage TV' where he goes: "Hi, I'm Hank Marvin... but I'll be having lunch soon..." That's a legend for you.
It's thru the Shadows , that changed the music of rock n roll . Thank u for the extraordinary n unique style .I'm still playing shadows music on my guitar at 71 .Shadows will never die their style of music will live for ever
