- Kate gives a marvelous rendition of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The Sound of Music. Did you know that Kate was considered for the part of Mother Abbess in the film version? Peggy Wood won the role, however, and made it her own. It's a treat to see and hear Kate's version, a tantalizing glimpse of what she might have done with the role. Taken from a popular variety show, 1966. Enjoy!
My italian voice teacher, Giovanni Gerace, said that the United States gave t o the world 5 outstanding voices, they were: Lillian Nordica, Geraldine Farrar, Helen Traubel, Eileen Farrell and KATE SMITH!
And your Italian voice teacher left out the NUMBER ONE, GREATEST OF ALL -- ROSA PONSELLE? WOW! I'd also question a couple of the others, but to leave out Ponselle us mind-boggling, especially since she was an Italian American.
There will never be another great singer like Kate Smith. 👍
Just fabulous by a fabulous singer! No one like her ever again!
She brings much love.and respect.for.life to every performance.
What a great voice, and a very nice humble lady. My dad had a chance to meet her in Lake Placid NY in the mid 1940s. She had a camp up there, and performed at the VFW, were he was Commander. She had great admiration and respect for all the Veterans returning from WWII.
That's Kate Smith as I remember her when I was a girl. What an amazing voice she had. Always powerful and flawless, and such a pleasure to listen to. Thanks for this video.
Kate was a class-act. A true professional in every sense of the word.
Truly an American icon. None better than Kate Smith. "God Bless America"
WOW! That's singing, people. Today's youth, THIS IS SINGING!
Fucking bommer
Never had one singing lesson, she called her voice a God given gift.....and it surely was .
Uh huh 🙄 keep believing that.
Boy that lady could belt out a tune like nobody's business as I was growing up we used to watch her on TV and she was always a favorite I always get goosebumps hearing her sing she is the greatest God bless Kate Smith
A perfect pairing... Kate Smith singing Climb Every Mountain, definitely a marriage made in heaven. Stirringly beautiful.
As I was a kid we always used to listen to it particularly on the holiday specials I still get goosebumps when I hear her sing God bless Kate Smith there's nobody like her
Loved this song first time I heard it so many years ago. Kate is such a talented artist. Thanks for sharing. 🎶❤️
Absolutely a stellar performance. We miss you Kate.
Kate Smith, national treasure. I've always loved her amazing voice ♡♡♡♡♡
She was such a flawless performer with a voice of unparalleled clarity!
Absolutely and a fine lady in every way what a wonderful performer !!!!!!
Wow! She was the best! Brought me to tears.
Sister Kate Smith is surely singing in Heavenly Places to our Lord! RD Rumpff, Celina, Ohio USA.
She is a national treasure. Beautiful and the best. Love her and miss her. A true talent.
My God that lady could belt out a song. She brings tears to my eyes with her moving renditions of inspirational songs. There will NEVER be another like her!!!
That dress she's wearing my g'mother made for her. Every bead was sewn on by hand.
@@Kinubara That's beautiful😄
@@Kinubara Tell us more!
She and Ethel Merman
Otherworldly....amazing range, talent, and emotion and American treasure, indeed.
If Dean Martin is stunned by this performance, then you know it was absolutely incredible !!!!!
A wonderful person who graced our country. God bless her
She was a fantastic singer. One of a kind
Odd how this type performer does not seem to perform anymore. I can't think of any 2021 modern singers who compare with the joy and wonder of this voice. I know great performers are working now. But so few are featured and few we see on television sing songs we can move away from humming or singing to ourselves. Such great voices are rare.
They seem to belong to a completely different time, not to return.
She hits those high notes overtime
this song gives me shivers as a young boy heard this at school every time I was in a difficult situation I would think of this song have no fear
There was none like her, brought hope to a nation under war, and welcomed in Christmas each year
every time I hear I think of when I was a kid growing up we used to listen to records and we used to listen to the Christmas specials that lady can belt out a tune like nobody's business I still get goosebumps hearing her sing God bless Kate Smith there's no one like her
Her voice gives me shivers - literally.
Check out Shirley Bassey's version of this in 1967 - same effect. Love these renditions!
@@Dunstlookalike Her version is very good, but she just doesn't have this voice.
God's gift to song! Can understand every word!
Remember her so well...loved her singing God Bless America. Reminded of her every time I hear it. Never surpassed her quality!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Kate, forgive in the ignorants. Your still a star in the sky. You did more for America then these pukes who judge you now.
I grew up in the 50s and for me the two greatest singers who could put total emotions into a song that made you cry, were Kate Smith and Sophie Tucker. Have loved both all my life.
no one could ever match her the power of her voice incredible
Has to be the greatest singer ever effortless and she loves to sing yeah this lady was a real SUPERSTAR 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Heart of an angel I will never forget her loveliness
Thank you for sharing. :)
Wow!
Just spectacular!
What a beautiful talented Singer! ❤️👏👏
wow !!!!!!! just wow 😍
The "wow just wow" way of expressing one's thoughts has, hopefully, gone out with the bathwater. Be your own person instead of copying some stupid expression.
Amazing singer ❤
I read that Rogers and Hammerstein wanted the great dramatic soprano Kirsten Flagstad to be in The Sound Of Music and sing this song. ❤ However, she declined. She already was very sick wiith bone cancer...
Just Amazing!
This is Kate Smith, period!
A stellar rendition I would say and to be listened every time we have to find new force in order to face every trouble. Thank you and best regards from Italy
Kate is so wonderful! What a great inspirational song for her to sing! Rodgers and Hammerstein, the composers, did they ever regret not choosing Kate to play the Rev. Mother in "The Sound of Music"???
They did choose and ask her! However, for some reason she refused. Sadly, she would have been magnificent! 🤔❤️
@@charliechilders6630 And Kate would have been more easily remembered today since the film is 50 years still shown and loved by new generations of young people.
@@williamcooper177 this is exactly what I was thinking . I was sad because at least she would have been remembered throughout history and not forgotten like she is today! Thanks for your wonderful reply. 🤔🤗👍
@@williamcooper177 I would like to mention this: my personal favorites includes "I asked the Lord" and "anyone can move a mountain" among many others. Have you heard these songs? I, myself am a actor and singer and I love great talent of all kinds. I especially love great and excellent singers....
Please share!
Once every age comes a great singer without pretence, Kate Smith was such a lady.
Kate Smith is fabulous. I have always thought so.
This song so true to life
Amazing!!!
With reference to the above description of this performance in the movie, although Peggy Wood played the Mother Abbess, she did NOT sing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." Although she was an accomplished singer in her own right, she felt that at age 72, she was too old to sing the part and it was dubbed by Marjorie McKay, a very popular "ghost singer" in many film roles. It was also said that Wood had trouble lip synching and, therefore, she is gazing out the window during the performance rather than directly facing the camera.
That's correct, and it was sung by Mother Abbess as the soft hymnal version, very different in timbre to Kate's booming voice.
What a voice !!!
Greetings from Florida 🐬 Thank You 🙏 for Sharing ❤ I'm a new subscriber ✨ and I hit the like 😊 icon ☑
Wow, just wow.
The song that inspired the, "I have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King.
GOD BLESS OUR AMERICA!!!!
bravo
stunning
Unequalled !

Heaven forbid if they hired a non-mezzo soprano to sing any major songs in SOM. By the way, it wasn't Peggy Wood singing. It was dubbed. Don't know the name of the actual singer.
Lacks the pipes. Just telling it like it is.
That sounds nothing like it
It's not supposed to, you dingbat. It's Kate Smith singing, not the singer from Sound of Music.
Horrible! The last thing this song needs is belting.
great rendition of this song! It can be interpreted in such a variety of ways. I happen to really like Tony Bennet's 1st recording of it. so different from Kate's here. But Kate's is wonderful. Belting? this is not belting. when you call this belting, it makes me think you have your own personal idiosyncratic definition.
You must absolutely be outta your mind to deny what this great woman’s doing here. Half the people who’ve covered the song have belted it; and if not, have done it often in a large rounded head voice w/fortissimo regardless of which stylistic choice. You have no taste.
@@bejingmaoNope! She's belting. It's a very classically influenced style of belting, but it's belting all the same.
@@gregorywiederecht fine. she is belting . is there womething wrong with belting? its a style of singing, and if it works, great.
this song DEFINITELY needs some good old belting.
