    Raiders of the Lost Ark is more than just a movie. Roger Ebert described it as “an out-of-body experience, a movie of glorious imagination and breakneck speed [...]” back when it came out in 1981. For so many of us, the significance of the Indiana Jones Trilogy in the shaping of our youth was crucial in the development of our own ideas and experiences. So much has already been said about these films, but we wanted to share our take on what’s possibly the most entertaining film ever made, while trying not to sound too much of a fanboy. Let’s talk about Raiders of the Lost Ark.

      My favorite of the three GOOD _Indiana Jones_ films, and that one other: The very first the one that started it all, _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ [1981]. Not only among the greatest films of all, but arguably the #1 greatest Action film of all (other contenders for that #1 Action movie spot: _Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior_ [1981], and _Die Hard_ [1988]).

    One of the most iconic music scores to emerge from cinema, "The Raiders March," and not a single mention of John Williams? The music composition in _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ is as much an integral and important part of such great storytelling, as is the visual and auditory experiences throughout the movie.

    I watched it recently, with a friend who is a cinematographer, after not having seen it in forever, and I was honestly shocked at the insane quality of the action. All the fights had a real weight to them and were completely believable, something rare, as you mentioned, with other films around in the 80's with their over-the-top action and fights (don't get me wrong, I love some of them). Both my friend and me were glued and were incredibly impressed with the cinematography and vision this film had. Hands down one of the greatest and most timeless action adventure films to ever be made. And I'm not even mentioning one of the greatest casting choices in cinema.

    2:54 "So he flies to Thibet, meets up with is ex girlfriend." Let me just stop you right there. You can't just gloss over one of the best supporting character introductions in cinematic history like that. She wouldn't have even tagged along (And gotten kidnapped by Nazis) if she hadn't passed the audition, but we first see her drinking a Sherpa under the table. Then, she tells Indiana to take a hike, and mouths off to a bunch of Nazis until he comes back. Then proceeds to fight the Nazis, with Indiana fucking Jones, staggering drunk. Saves his life, twice, and even stops for a drink from a couple bullet holes in a pony keg. "I'm your goddamned Partner!" If anyone else had been in that bar, besides Marion Ravenwood, it would have been a fetch quest. A footnote. It wasn't.

    • @AMatterofFilm
      @AMatterofFilm  6 років тому +1

      Hey man, totally agree with you. It's one of the best supporting character intros ever put to screen. So you know what happens there. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the video, though! And thanks for commenting.

    Too bad Temple of Doom being a prequel throws in a major plothole. Even though Indy saw supernatural power in the form of the Sankara Stones being able to rip people's hearts out without killing them and forced to drink mind-controlling blood, he apparently still doesn't believe in that sort of thing in Raiders. If it was a sequel, then it could be forgiven a bit more.

    If I can make a quick digression; fuck The Big Bang Theory.
    Anyway, nice video. I'm not sure if the hero's journey applies fully to Indy given he starts the movie a hero and ends it a hero, unlike say, Luke or Neo. His arc is more rooted in personal development and coming to value the people in his life than his learning to be a hero, but you do explore his arc well and articulate the importance of his journey. I also like that you point-out that Indy is way more vulnerable and human than the likes of Rambo and that makes him a much more endearing hero. Also nice to see a video essay on Indiana Jones given I rewatched Raiders about two weeks ago, so this was a nice surprise.

    • @AMatterofFilm
      @AMatterofFilm  6 років тому

      Agreed. Fuck the Big Bang Theory. You're right, Indy is already a hero by pretty much all standards since the opening of the movie. But since he does change, learn new things and ultimately gets back with Marion in the end I would say this could be considered a version of a Hero's Journey. Congrats on getting 100 subs, man! Keep pushing forward!

    1. George Lucas came up with Indiana Smith, but he also came up with Indiana Jones. They didn't need Lawrence Kasdan for that.
    2. A lot of your clips are strangely chosen. Like Peter Parker being bitten by the spider as the moment he "chooses to fight against evil."
    3. You stole your definition of the hero's journey from Redlettermedia.

    • @dgdaner

      They also give the impression that it was written for Harrison Ford to play. I thought it was common knowledge that Tom Selleck was the first choice.
      Also didn't mention that Charlton Heston film Secret of the Incas as inspiration for Raiders. It isn't brought up much, for some reason, but if you've seen it the similarities are obvious.

    Nice retrospective to this great film. It’s one of the best action movies ever made and I never get tired of watching it. This movie, and the rest of the Indiana Jones movies, are made with such care and story you follow Indy’s quest whether he’s looking for the Ark Of The Covenant, or the Shankara Stones, or the Holy Grail, he always learns something or gains something. Even in The King son of the Crystal Skull, it’s about this lonely man who has done so much in the world discovering he has a son and rekindling his love for Marion, and at the end he’s gained a family. Great movies. Maybe can review the Spaghetti Westerns, those are some great movies.

    Adventure film at its best. The genius of G. Lucas shines through in every aspect.
    The adventure point-and-click computer games that followed were just as good!

    One more thing - a great hero needs a great villan/foil. Belloc is Indy's equal as a treasure finder and the scene where he calls Indy's bluff "Go ahead, send it back to God" is brilliant.

    Please, fact check me, but Harrison Ford was not the first choice actor for Indiana Jones - it was Tom Selleck. Also, Indiana Jones never flew to Tibet. He flew to Neal. This video was great though! By far my favorite movies of all time!

      This is all true! Tried to fit in the Tom Sellek ended up leaving it out. Tibet is right next to Nepal, but you're right. Marion's bar is in Nepal. Thanks for the comment!

      Spielberg ORIGINALLY wanted Harrison Ford to play Indy, but Lucas didn't want Harrison to be in yet ANOTHER one of his stories.

    Last crusade is better because it's more about the father and son part to lose and find the connection between the two again.
    And this tune
    ua-cam.com/video/8LtWN94DxrA/v-deo.html
    Remind me of my grandfather a concentration camp DACHAU (Mai 1940 to April 1945) who survived and could tell me this tale. I don't know why but this soundtrack remind me of him his wisdom his spirit his advice to never give up to fight even in the darkest hours of our lives. Well this is how Indian jones connect to my life.

    I’ve been watching your videos for two hours now, and the only criticism I have is you continue to run scenes when you’re done talking. If you have nothing left to say, just end the video!
