  • Too much rain, overwatering and the wrong soil mix are the causes of succulent rot. Having the right soil mix can eliminate these problems but a lot of substrates used in succulents mix can be very expensive. Cat litter is a cost effective substrate to incorporate in a succulents soil mix.

Due to your inspiration I am using POULTRY GRIT, WHICH IS INSOLUBLE CRUSHED GRANITE in my potting mix...really enjoy your interesting videos! I am in USA.

The best soil mix I ever had was when I first started with Succulents and I was busting up boulders of granite and decompose granite in my garage lol remember that Liz? It was a lot of work but it taught me so much about the minerals that Succulents love! I still have buckets of Mica🤪 my succulents were colorful and tight and they grew beautifully! I have since switched to poultry grit it’s more expensive but it’s less work and the floor in my garage appreciate it as well! And the bagged soil that I get has lava rock in it. I’ve been doing a lot of soil experiments and I’m happy with what I’ve come up with. I never forget the lessons that you’ve taught me❤️

I add lava rocks and crush lava rocks in my succulent n cacti plants to increase its roots and I did an experiment. Adding lava rocks on the bottom for drainage, use cactus soil mix with perlite, add lava rocks in between each time you add soil. My peruvian apple spiralis grew 3 inches within a month during June 28 - July 28. I hope this helps you, take care!

Great video I think kitty litter is much cheaper and I’ve heard from other succulent growers that is what they use 👍

Thank you for the video. I was in to bonsai initially and there are some who use just plain cat litter for bonsai soil. I tried a lot to get the non clumping cat litter particularly diatomaceous earth. But unfortunately in India we dnt have it easily avlb. I am using pumice4-8 mm, i have also used cinder and crushed leca. I am yet to see how they differ. I have recently ordered coarse sand( river sand) and granite chips. I will have to wait to see what works and what ds not. We also dnt get most of the different variety of rocks. We instead have various marble chips but i haven’t used them yet.

Thx for video, I did not know that you can use cat litter for soil. Would it be the same if you use half cat litter and half granite in that soil mix?
