I love the structure of, and the timing in this song. It's not typical- verse, chorus, verse, chorus... It's a story from beginning to end. ...runnin into the midnight, with her clothes whippin in the wind. Reachin into the heart of darkness for the tenderness within... Masterpiece.

my Goodness , I just looked up her bio and what a body of work, I don't think many other artist worked with so many people as she did, what a great contribution to the world she made, the world was a better place with her , and worse place without her... R I P
This song has a whole new meaning to me. This hits home. I dated a girl in high school in the 80s. She meant a lot to me. Years later, our paths crossed again and dated. Each time she did not stick around. She had been facing issues in her life. I tried helping but sadly couldn't. Then i read in the paper her obituary. To this day it hits me and I wonder what if she stayed and we stayed together. She will always have a piece of my heart. K. L. , you are missed by many. I hear this song and think of you. At The time, you in fact gave me something back that I was missing. For that, thank you. RIP KL
One of the very best tunes of 1980!! Always favored this one since it first hit the airwaves!! This is also an excellent recording of this all time great Jam!! Hat’s off to Megan for throwing this one up in such HIGH QUALITY‼️👍👍
It's so perfectly structured and powerfully played and written...And I mean, from the first note to the fade-out. Jackson's vocals are so heartfelt. The use of the echoes is an especially effective touch of pure artistry that make the song truly sparkle. It's one of those "once in a career" type of tracks. Vastly underrated and under-played.
Great song. Got to see him live at Cow Palace back in 1980 when he was on his "Hold Out" tour. Awesome concert. One of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. Thanks for unloading. Unfortunately you got some lyrics wrong, though.
If I remember correctly, this was J.B.'s foray into a more commercial sound musically and lyrically and he just nails it. This song brings me close to tears every time I hear it. I think we all knew someone like "that girl"
@@mykljahn3045 Dan Rease is wrong. As another poster mentioned, it's about Valerie Carter who at one time was Jackson's lover and was James Taylor's backup singer for over a decade. The Steve Winwood song "Valerie" is also about her. Valerie died of a heart attack in 2017 and this song was released 35 years before she died and she never marreid Jackson, as the lyrics clearly tell you.

I loved (strong grossly over used imprecise word) this from first hearing it as a boy, yes, 1980. I never knew if it was real life or what, never thought to look it up. Didn't need to know or want to know. These comments removed some of the mystique of this song. All fine: I will always turn to it as needed. (😊)
Some people just live the way they want to consequences be damned. And Valarie Carter was one of those rare people. The world lost a true musical talent when Valarie left us. RIP Valarie Carter.
This song really gets to my core. I was 19 when this came out...a lot of memories growing up in So. Cal. with Jackson Brown as a back ground sound track.
I sure wish we had "official release videos" back in the early eighties, when a three minute song had lyrics that could make a whole movie. The early days of music videos produced some real gems. Most videos today are a total waste of time.
There are soooo many reasons to absolutely love this song. A couple of weeks back I had my B&W's, with my old school Marantz 2215B at full output, and my neighbors threw a darn rock through my porch window to hear it better! They could have simply asked me to open the windows, but I guess they couldn't wait to enjoy this awesome tune!
David Lindley, playing his Rickenbacker lap, tuned way up to open C,playing through an overamped Dumble Overdrive. That solo should have gone on for hours!

And so often incredibly accurate....
