- Former US President Donald Trump will be charged over hush money payments made to a porn star just before the 2016 presidential election.
The details of the charges he will face have not yet been released.
A grand jury voted to indict him on criminal charges, after investigating a $130,000 pay-out to Stormy Daniels in an attempt to buy her silence over an alleged affair. He denies wrongdoing.
Mr Trump is the first serving or former US president to face charges.
He is also being investigated in several other cases.

In January 2017 Trump publicly swore an oath on a bible at his inauguration ceremony to protect and defend the US Constitution. In 2019 Trump mocked the US Constitution by publicly saying the words "phony emoluments clause". In December of 2022, after Trump left office, he again disrespected the US Constitution.
#5) Trump misogynistically and adulterously said of women: "Grab them by the pussy."! Trump committed adultery with Stormy Daniels and then tried to cover it up. Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was in prison for crimes related to Trump's cover-up of his adulterous scandal with Stormy Daniels. Most Republicans claim to be the moral party and/or the majority Christian party, but hypocritically enthusiastically want to give an adulterous Donald Trump, another 4 years in office. If a US president who was a member of the Democratic Party did the terrible things Trump has, of course, the Republican Party leaders would be screaming for his removal from office.

We don't know what the charges are yet. They won't be made public until Trump is arraigned.
One charge will almost certainly be the misdemeanor of falsifying business records. However, that misdemeanor can be bumped up to a felony if it was perpetrated in furtherance of, or to cover up, a second crime.
There has been speculation that the second charge will be a violation of federal campaign finance laws, but not because campaign funds were used to make the payments. There are limits on how much money an individual or a corporation can make to a political campaign in a single election. The payments can be considered campaign contributions if they were intended to influence the results of the election, e.g., by preventing Daniels from publicizing embarrassing details, right before the election, of her alleged liaison with Trump. The payments made to Stormy Daniels were first funnelled through a shell company, and went well over the lawful corporate limit for campaign contributions.
Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who set up the shell company, also transferred funds from his personal home equity line of credit account to the shell company, and from there to Daniels's attorney. Trump later reimbursed Cohen.
In 2018, Cohen was convicted of (among other crimes) 1 count of willfully causing an unlawful corporate contribution and 1 count of making an excessive campaign contribution at the request of a candidate or campaign. Trump was President at the time, and the US Department of Justice has a policy of not indicting a sitting President. So, Trump was referred to as "Individual 1" in Cohen's indictment. Cohen testified that he made the payments in coordination with and at the direction of Individual 1.
