Same here. I feel that it's kinda strange that I'd heard of the Coconut Grove fire, a much older disaster, a decade or two ago and yet I'd not heard of the Stardust fire until less than a half hour ago. I guess it's surprising what you can miss when you're not from a certain country even when the event itself is quite tragic.

It's sickening that Christy Moore got into huge trouble for this song, while the owners of the nightclub where so many lost their lives, responsible for many fire safety breaches including locked fire escapes, were PAID compensation. They should have faced charges of manslaughter!

sadly the 49th victim of the stardust tragedy was a woman who had kids at the disco,on hearing of the fire she left her home and spent the night on foot searching all the hospitals in dublin looking for her kids,God only knows what that poor woman went true in those dark hours as it all became too much and she died of a heart attack while searching, her kids surived the fire and were all at home in bed while the frantic search took their mother's life(alot of irish homes would not have phones in 1981),God Bless the victims and their families of the Stardust and shame on the Irish goverment who still to this day take's care of the "Fat Cats" and looks down on the everyday hard working people-The book "they never came home" is an interesting and heartbreaking account of the night of the stardust and the months and years after, sadly for all the wrong reasons!

There are so many heartbreaking stories, many of which will never be told.
Perhaps one of the worst was the guy who got out with his girlfriend and went back inside to carry 3 other badly injured people out. On his 4'th attempt he never came out again.

My two aunts were in Stardust, one 18, one 16.
My elder aunt was trampled on and had holes in her arms from all the high heels, but she crawled out and went to hospital and left the same night, especially because of the hundreds of other victims/survivors in the hospitals.
My younger aunt was carried out by a man and was taken to hospital. She was in a coma for 3 months and was in hospital for 6. Her arms were scarce of skin and had the doctors had to get skin from her legs to put on her arms, and her bandages had to be changed every four hours. They're both doing well now, but it's heartbreaking to think of the families who never saw their relatives ever again! Or received any compensation when the owner, Eamon Butterly did! What a disgrace!
R.I.P to the 48 who never came home!

This still happens to this day. Every single nightclub I go to has about twice as many people as the building can hold, it's impossible to move around in any of them, and open exits are usually few and far between.
This is just BEGGING to happen again unless our government steps up and introduces proper laws about the number of people allowed in one building, and the number and accessibility of fire exits, the more the better.

  • @TheStapleGunKid

Just a chilling song. Amazing to think the club owners never faced any accountability for locking the fire exits.

You think that's bad, Christy Moore got sued by the butterlys, the butterlys argued the fire exits weren't the only thing, admitting they locked the victims in, they argued the main reason people died was because they went to the stardust, AND THEY FUCKING WON THE LAWSUIT AND MADE MORE MONEY OFF OF MOORE ON TOP THE THE INSURANCE FROM THE PLACE BURNING DOWN

I was too young but have followed the story and I have to admire the strength of the families and the sheer anger that butterly who owned it took no responsibility for chains on fire exits bars on toilet windows and he collected insurance money soon after while families were pawned off with an insult and to make it worse the same owners family tried to open up a new place on the same spot and had the neck to want to call it the stardust 😡🙄

we will never let them be forgotten; poor kids out for a dance and the chance of a snog
i was 10 when i heard my friend said did you hear about the fire? i hadn't went home and knew right away there was something wrong (this in the days before 24/7 news and internet) and the radio was on but there was no music no chat just a DJ talking in his normal voice as news came in of the deaths and injuries
even in the school the next few week the teaches were different. i think they were in shocked as was the whole country. remember these are my memories from a 10 year old
then things turned to anger; when i came out that doors were padlocked and so and that (can't say what i really want to say) saying he will rebuild not one bit of sorrow for the kids that died and their families all he thought about was his insurance and how hard done by he was
people still are waiting for the truth to come out

The song was included on Christy's 1985 album, Ordinary man, but the song was removed after a court case taken by the owners of the stardust nightclub. It was replaced by a song called, ' Another song is born'. The new song was a reference to the other song being banned. Christy was right all along.

    "Your Silent Face"
    A thought that never changes
    Remains a stupid lie
It's never been quite the same
    No hearing or breathing
    No movement, no colors
    Just silence
    Rise and fall of shame
    A search that shall remain
We asked you what you'd seen
    You said you didn't care
    Sound formed in a vacuum
May seem a waste of time
It's always been just the same
    No hearing or breathing
    No movement no lyrics
    Just nothing

@36benson A very good observation and point indeed i will get Antoinette Keegan to look into that,i spotted that 49 digit before aswell but now you mention a possible reason for it "if" there was a fire fighter involved hence the extra digit but on the quiet,if you know what i mean,a cover up, then maybe they would have to have a proper investigation ,big thanks for your input / thoughts etc .respect / namaste .

And didn't every word he uttered in the song come true. The politicians from the same political parties are now just doing what their predecessors did and have done since, nothing but shed crocodile tears. I hope all the families receive a full apology from the state and whoever allowed (gave permission) for the issue of the club licence be held liable. Even though the state say the laws today are sufficient, they are not. A fire Officer on a complaint been made, should be able to enter a premises and shut it down without having to go to the courts.
