Nigersaurus: The Dinosaur with 500+ Teeth | Dinosaur Documentary

- Picture the scene: you’re stood on a damp floodplain, stretching miles into the distance. Below your feet, shallow puddles of water have spilled out onto the flat, low-lying river basin which surrounds the immediate area. Thick, boggy marshland is abundant - straight ahead, a slow-moving river snakes through the land, producing the muddy wetlands that characterise the landscape. The river lies in the shadow of distant peaks that emerge over the horizon; piercing the clouds that fill the grey, overcast sky of the Early Cretaceous of Niger, Arica. Several metres behind you lie sparsely-forested open woodlands, from which the chirping of insects can be heard, as well as the odd pterosaur.
A small lizard scurries onto a rock a few feet away and, noticing your presence, immediately shifts off in the opposite direction to find a clearer spot to relax. A large herd of Lurdusaurus, a genus of heavily-built, long-necked iguanodont, has now emerged from the trees to drink from the reliable water supply that dominates the landscape; the gruff mumbling calls of the herbivores now abruptly overpowering the soundscape. Between the dinosaurs and the commotion kicked up in the marshland between them, you notice an individual that doesn’t look quite right. Shorter at the shoulder, broader, and with the majority of its length composed of its neck and tail, it’s plainly a sauropod, completely unrelated to Lurdusaurus, but it’s roughly the same size as them, at around nine metres in length.
This is abnormally small for a sauropod; the group of long-necked, often giant dinosaurs which included creatures such as Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus. Even so, it’s still very big when it’s standing this close to you. The strange creature rears its head to check that the coast is clear of predators and snorts a brief grunt of satisfaction from its nose and mouth; particles of sand gracing the humid afternoon air as it does so. Lowering its thick, extended neck to the water, it takes a long, deep drink. This is Nigersaurus, one of the most amazing dinosaur discoveries of the entire African continent.

This dinosaur gets pulled over more often than others 👴🏻
It sounds like this animal ate horsetails. The fact that a single tooth wore out in just a couple of weeks means that not only did it pick a lot of sand, grit and other abrasives as it ate, most likely the plants it fed on had a lot of silica micro nodules in their tissues, like grasses do, too. Thing is, grass had yet to evolve when Nigersaurus lived, and the only other plants I know of that has silica micro nodules in them are horsetails and mares' tails...
They spent eons being oppressed by the lesser known honkasauruses.

Nigersaurus 💀
Nigersaurus together with Lurdusaurus and Ouranosaurus made my favourite trio from this formation. Vacuum mouth, sail back and hippo-like herbivore.
A herbivore with 500 teeth? I call that a "prehistoric lawn mower". 😁
I had the same thought when I saw the critter's face.
@Kark: If you think 500 is a lot, the general Hadrosaurine type dinosaurs, whether they were members of the Hadrosaurine, Lambeosauria, or whatever, sometimes had 700+ teeth packed into their skull; the beak was generally toothless, but the teeth started just behind it, inside the jaw.
So, while so-called duckbill dinosaurs lacked proper canines and may have only had a few incisors, they were certainly well equipped in terms of pre-molars and molars, with huge batteries of chewing teeth in their cheek areas, to grind up their food as their cheek pouches stopped it falling out of their mouths.

The Nigersaurus often get beaten in many turf wars and eaten by the Tyronesaurus rekt
The narrator is way to calm, it feels more like a asmr video. He's still a good narrator, a bit too detailed, it's like 2 mins in an haven't even said the dinosaur. But in all good clips, an narrator.
Reminds me of the lawn mower fascinating I I don't believe I've ever seen a skeleton with so many teeth first of all arranged the way those were arranged
Okay for a sec I was baffled thinking I have been saying Niger wrong my whole life but then I heard him pronounce brachiosaurus so I was like nah I’m probs good
So he says “knee-jeer” but I have always said “nigh-jur”…..anyone care to give a verdict
The narrator is correct. I looked it up
@@hayliedlr I looked it up and it pronounced it the way I said it though 🤔……and here’s me coming back to say there’s a French and English pronunciation so problem solved

Perhaps what would be considered a very boring dinosaur which is in fact, not boring at all. What a great Nigersaurus dinosaur it was. Fascinating.
I think I could do terrible things to whoever created your background music. A nice snack for a T Rex springs to mind.
You did that dinosaur dirty with that name.
The background music ruins the videos. Once you notice it it's all you can notice.
Phonetically...After the "N"....it's an"EYE" sound....MUCH LUV FROM N.AUGUSTA S.C
The Japanese will be really confused when they realize it was an extremely slow moving dinosaur.

Personally, I think these dinosaurs are pretty cool 😎 👌 🦕
This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this creature. Which begs the question, how come high schools and colleges don’t teach about this particular dinosaur? I think it’s for obvious reasons where they would not be able to keep the kids from laughing Or, wanting to cancel the teacher or school. Also because they remember the mistake they made with the planet Uranus. Lol. I’m almost thinking this might have been the first marginalized dinosaur lol
😂😂😂 they might consider renaming it

08:40 Okay, 60 plus 68 doesn't even come close to 500 (08:00).... 🤔🤔🤔
maybe im wrong but i think the 500 number might be the layers of teeth waiting to take the place of the front row, which is where the 60/68 are?
Edit: yeah it looks like those numbers refer to the COLUMNS of teeth, not individual teeth. If you go to 11:45 you can see a cross section of the skull showing how the teeth emerge.
