  • Few games have had the sort of cultural impact that Minecraft has. We're looking back at three ways Minecraft changed the landscape of media - and streaming - as we know it.

With all that technical talk, I want to add a bit of the emotional side:
Firstly, the music. It's quite unique and fits the game really well in a super weird way. Secondly, I think Minecraft is beautiful. Even without all the shaders and texture packs. And yeah people complain about the terrain generation, and maybe rightfully so, but watching a sunset from your cosy little starter hut with the furnace crackling next to you...
And yes, most of that is nostalgia. We grew up with it and it reminds us of simpler times, so it's not as much a factor of why Minecraft became this big.
But it definitely plays into why it STAYED this big for this long.

When ever I now play Minecraft with the music on, and those notes start playing, I'm instantly feeling the nostalgia. Minecraft was my childhood; I played on a server my dad made with my mom and him, along with my uncle and cousins. It shaped my interests and what I love, and it will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Another great thing is how Minecraft handles mods. It actively encourages them, being open and supportive. And that’s really admirable. It’s something a lot of devs will try and discourage. Hatsune Miku really did the world a favor.

    • @Zaire82
      @Zaire82 4 роки тому +16

@@evancarey-mcgibney548 Technically speaking, it is, but it's really just a game using the same engine as another. It would be a mod if it added to a pre-existing game, but Gmod is stand-alone. If it's stand-alone, then it's an individual game. I've never installed nor played the half life duology, so the simple fact of me having Gmod and enjoying it by itself is testament to that.
But none of that really matters. Mods making the install of other mods easier are rarer than games that support mods openly. Just because Garry's Mod originated as a half life mod, doesn't make the fact of it's support for other mods any less true.
And My overall point is "I've played games that support mods, and while Minecraft has thousands, I can tell they aren't supported, just tolerated. They have never once made modding easier."

Another thing I think is relevant to note is that for a lot of members of generation Z, Minecraft was essentially our first mainstream game. Before Minecraft, the only video games I had ever played were Horse Life Adventures 2, Super Scribblenauts, and Brain Games (all on the DS). When Minecraft first came out, I watched let's plays on UA-cam on the TV sometimes, and thought it looked neat. When I started middle school, I was allowed to get a tablet. First thing I wanted to install? Minecraft PE. I'm a senior in high school now, and while I've definitely played a lot more games since then (the Zelda series quickly became my favourite!), I still have that old tablet with Minecraft on it (partly because I'm broke and can't get a faster device, partly because it hasn't broken yet so why replace it). Minecraft is the game that taught me about video games and how they influence popular culture.

Played java first in 2012 before the horse update and then I switched to 360 edition (now called legacy console edition). I have had that 360 for 7 years and Minecraft still works plus I still go back to those old worlds of mine. I also have it on my phone, Switch, and Xbox One S. And I'll soon be getting Java on my new laptop. Once back when I was 13 I played the game for 13 hours straight when I was building a giant 400+ block long ship. And, with the ability of servers, you can enjoy building together and playing mini games. And with mods, you can make it specific to what you enjoy. It brought us closer together. Everyone in my family has an account. My brothers, my sister, my nieces, and me had a realm that we would all play on. Me and friends would call each other and play with each other on servers like mineplex. I had it on my phone when it was still called pocket edition, and it was free. I would spend hours making skins on skindex for me and my friends. I rarely play it anymore but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this square game that brought me closer to my family and friends. Thank you Minecraft!

Great video! Minecraft's success and impact is really fascinating. Just one thing i'd like to add: IMO another reason for why people got so hooked by Minecraft is its adventure and progression aspect. Of course there is a lot more of it today than there was in the early stages. But still a lot of playing Survival Mode, which basically everyone did back in the day, consisted of gathering resources, crafting better stuff, exploring and so on. And many people probably got a lot of motivation from searching and finding diamonds, finally getting to the nether or finding a cool new cave system to explore or of course a cool new place to build at. Multiplayer played a role in motivating people too I think.
The part about MC and videos also kinda reminded me of a Lets Play series the UA-camr Gronkh did here in Germany. It basically ran continiously for ~1500 parts from the alpha stages of MC to the full version and helped to make the game popular here. Today of course we have tons of MC UA-cam projects and Lets plays. I think there aren't many other games which work that well with videos

i think the biggest thing about minecraft is that there's no singular way to play. you can do almost ANYTHING, even more so with just how much modded support goes into the game. For hecks sake, datapacks, shaders, texture packs, all of that, that's something you'd have to go quite a length for in a lot of other games. But for minecraft? it's just. A part of the game.
There's series like hermitcraft (a series which was instrumental to the re-rise of minecraft content), which gathers all manner of creators, be it redstoners, builders, and anyone in between.
There's scicraft, a series + server which has not only pushed minecraft to its limits, but then BEYOND those limits.
There's ALL those roleplay series, all however many there are now (all i know is that theres a lot), that brought so much fun into the games.
There's the creative servers, the pvp servers, the servers you make on aternos with your friends and then complain about the lag.
There's realms, and there's so many server hosts.
Minecraft, at it's core, i think, is a game about inspiration and the bonds you form with others.
The community IS a core aspect of the game, rather than something alongside it.
Everything about minecraft is just like the end poem. Inspiring and hopeful and its telling you that it's YOUR CHOICE how you experience not only the game, but life itself.
Minecraft, to me, is a game about the fact that if you don't have a home, you can make one.
You're never alone. There's people beside you.
We might be growing up, but Minecraft's always there to fall back on, to look through your old builds and old worlds and know that you have done something unique simply by opening this silly little block game and having fun.
And I think that's why minecraft is so successful.
Because minecraft is a home in more ways than just building a house.
...and now im crying about the block game again.
Anyway, humans really fucking love cubes and i think thats great

A certain appeal about minecraft is also how it makes the simple act of mining blocks satisfying. I picked up the game a few weeks ago and at one point i needed to mine out a big room, and something about the way you break the blocks as well as the sound they make just had me remove a big chunk without even noticing i didn't have other types of music or such on my ears like i usually do with such activities. the sounds and music in minecraft was satisfying enough for me, and that's something special considering my asd brain which usually requires many different things to do at once to feel satisfied.

I'm a redstoner. I'm a software dev IRL, and what I enjoy most about both my job and redstone is taking bits and pieces, each with very specific behaviors, and combining them to make complex functional things. Redstone really nails the way you combine individual bits that don't do very much on their own to make something amazing. Ever seen ilmango's massive contraptions? Yeah, I can't do that kind of thing, but the fact that it's even possible is AMAZING.
That's the main thing, for me at least, that other sandbox games lack. They try to guide the player too much, not explicitly but inherent in their design. For instance, they give you an item that's made to perform a very specific task, which is great, but it's so specific that you can't combine it with much else. You can't combine things creatively. Even Minecraft's crafting system captures this difference: every other game with crafting, you craft stuff by tossing a bunch of items into a UI and selecting what you want to craft, and then boom, out comes your product. In Minecraft, that's not really a thing (the recent Recipe Book excepted... I'll get to that in a second). You instead choose what you want to craft by... crafting it. The same ingredients can make very different things, but not just because you told the game "I want this"; it's because you combined the ingredients in a way that makes some sense and then got the reward of a product you expected. I've seen videos of people teaching new players how to play and just being like, "OK, now craft a pickaxe. It's three iron and two sticks." And when the newbie asks how, they just go, "Well, what does a pickaxe look like? Make that." They're always so proud when they get it right, as they start to realize the power they have over the Minecraft world comes from understanding how things fit together.
So... that's why I love Minecraft, personally, and that's why no other sandbox games have quite the same appeal to me. I'm cautiously anticipating Hytale, because it looks amazing and has great mod support from the start, but so far they have yet to reveal anything redstone-y or automation-focused, so... I'm not sure I'm going to end up enjoying that, either, despite the massive work of art it clearly will be.

Whenever I see something about Minecraft, I just get such a good feeling in my heart. I was introduced to Minecraft in 2012 through youtube. I was too young to make a youtube account so instead of subscriptions, I'd use my search history to make sure I check all of my favorite youtubers' channels. In 2013, I got my dad to buy minecraft for me and I would exclusively play creative mode because the mobs scared me (can you blame a 7 year old?). I've been following Minecraft's development over the years, and I've made some very good friends and joined really accepting communities through the game. It sucks I have less time to play it now, but I still get a good wave of nostalgia when I look at what's become of it. Minecraft has had such a large impact on me and how I experience the world because I grew up learning that the world is what I make of it. Literally. (Yes I stole that from your top 50 games of the decade video lol)

I'm really glad they went IMMEDIATELY into the "notch sucks so much that people say hatsune miku made minecraft so as not to talk about him" bit, just erase notch from history, he's the walking personification of that seinfeld leaving the audience gif

AStandsForFrench agreed. Instead of talking about Notch, let’s talk about Mojang and some of the influential individuals such as jeb_ and Dinnerbone that allowed Minecraft to continue

I don't know if it's to early to be nostalgic about Minecraft, but hearing Simon and Lewis talk about it and seeing the old Starship Enterprise map gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

Awesome video guys! But, you need to have a portion about the Adventure Maps in Minecraft. That's a whole other layer to Minecraft that got me hooked.
It's those fan-made awesome, complex scenery, mansions, forests, and ruins that build an immersive world that you can explore. The building of your own game, like The Dropper or an RPG, gives you so much fun to build and play, whether with friends or alone.
As more features like command blocks and more creatures got added, it got to the point where it was like maps were they're own 2-5 hour game, like you what can find in Itchio today. I think of Minecraft maps like "A Day in Tuscarora" and "Herobrine's Return".
Horror Minecraft maps became realistic and actually scary with jumpscares, Custom music and sounds, and Cutscenes. Like the horror map called "Late."
Heck, we could add VOICELINES and our own people to voice act for the NPCs. Like in "No Learning Curve 2" where the antagonist thinks he's like Glados but is just a really big hapless nerd in a labcoat. The voices were just so hilarious and spot on.
It just blows my mind looking back at how much it impacted my childhood. And I say it deserves at least a mention.
