First of all, thank you so much for your views, connections, 'likes', and subscriptions! I love being able to meet and connect with others with a passion for the outdoors and share what can be learned online.
In this video I take my Kelty Noah 12 tarp to the beach for a little end of summer fun with some of my students. Recently I read somewhere (I think from REI) about a technique in setting up a tarp on the beach by filling nylon ditty bags with sand and then burying them. For obvious reasons, steaking out a tarp on the beach is ineffective. In this video, I simply go through the process and demonstrate the "ditty bag in the sand" technique. It worked great too! My only caution if you ever use this technique to is be aware of how much wind is being blown on your setup. The more the wind, the deeper I would bury the bags. I have also read that if you don't have ditty bags that you can tie your tie-out-points to a log and bury it in the sand. I didn't try it in this video, but I wouldn't question its effectiveness.
I basically brought the Kelty out as a sun shade for the adult volunteers that came with our group, and it worked awesome for that. Some day, I would love to be able to use this technique and camp on a beach somewhere. If you know of any places in Michigan where they allow beach camping, please let me know.
The versatility of the Kelty tarp continues to amaze me. It's quickly growing into something that is of regular use for my outdoor musings and outings with my family.
After the demonstration portion of the video, I share various clips from our day at the beach. We were at Warren Dunes State Park in Sawyer, Michigan. This area is absolutely gorgeous, and you can often escape to this gem and enjoy the beach with very little people on it. I don't know about you, but for me, the beach is much better enjoyed with less people on it. For this trip, we went from 5pm to sunset on a Wednesday in August, and I don't think we saw more than 20 -- 30 others on it. The water temperature was amazing too! Normally, Lake Michigan has a hard time warming up, but I have found over the years that late August is THE best time to hit up Lake Michigan in terms of water temp.
Below the video on my blog page (www.davidspassa...) are various pictures from our trip to the beach as well. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching, and we'll see you outdoors!
The song sample you heard in the intro was from the finger-style guitarist, David Youngman. I highly recommend you check him out.

I have been in a never ending search for a good beach canopy. I don't have enough space to tell you all about it. Just this week I returned a Big Agnes Shelter after one day on the beach bent the aluminum poles. This video enlightened me to the Noah Tarp. I ordered and got it today along with 2 Kelty Tarp Poles. Can't wait to set it up on the beach and I'm hoping I can close this chapter of my life. Much appreciated video.

Headed to the beach with my KN12 and poles this weekend. Great tip on filling bags with sand for anchors. I actually have 4 poles but the sandbags will allow me to avoid having to make or buy huge sand stakes and will make it much easier to reposition and adjust my lines. Thanks!

Nice video! Thanks for the views of Warren Dunes-it’s been 50 years since I was there last. If you go up north, check out Petoskey State Park-there are dunes there, too.

I'm not sure what exactly they are called, but they are adjustable tent poles that I picked up at Wal Mart in the outdoors section. They are for bigger tents I believe.
