Today I’m talking about how to get your class’s attention. The first tip in getting your class’s attention is to never talk over your students. When you are giving instructions make sure you are sending the correct signals. Your body language should say, I am in charge, what I’m saying is important, and you may not interrupt me. Your eye contact, body position, gestures, and facial expressions should say all of these things. When you have something to say wait until you have every child’s attention. When you are giving directions, you expect everyone to give you all of their attention.
So make sure you are not doing anything else while giving directions. Like passing out papers or sharpening pencils. Teachers love to multitask but this is not the time. Doing something else while giving directions sends the message that what you are saying really isn’t that important and interruptions are fine. This next tip is a hard one to do. If at any time during the day you feel that you are losing control of your students, do not get loud. There is power in whispering and forcing students to strain to listen to you. This is a technique I use from Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov. It is called quiet power and it is much more effective than getting loud. Don’t ever show children that they can control you and your emotions. Watch my vlog to learn some ways you can instantly gain your kids’ attention. Your tone of voice is very important. It should be firm and authoritative. That’s called strong voice. When using the attention grabbers you can vary the way you say class to keep kids engaged. For example, say it high or low, fast or slow. It is up to you.
