Mornings set the tone for the entire day. I make sure my mornings run smoothly by following three easy techniques. I clean and organize my room for the next day, I greet every child in the morning, and I have an entry routine.
#1 Clean and organize your room for the next day
When I leave school in the afternoon I have to have a clean organized classroom. This is a must for me. Walking into a clean classroom makes me feel so happy and fresh. I make sure all books, copies, and supplies needed for the next day’s lessons are set aside in my drawer labeled for the day. I tidy up my kidney table. This always gets messy from the days small group lessons. The last thing I do before I leave is make sure I have morning work set aside.
#2 Greet every child in the morning
Classroom expectations are set the second students enter your room. I greet all of my students in the morning at my classroom door. Doing this builds a connection with your students. I also engage them just briefly: “Oh my gosh, that hair bow is so cute, Clara!” I let them choose how they want to be greeted. Check out the vlog to see how that works. I also use this time to quickly quiz my students on the week’s sight words. This sets the expectation that every minute matters even when we are not in the classroom. I also check their daily take home binder at this time. This saves me a lot of time. I pull out notes addressed to me and check the parent/teacher communication log.
    #3 Have an entry routine
Your entry routine affects the rest of the day. Have a set of morning jobs in place. The morning jobs become habit. Morning jobs begin with putting lunch boxes in the hallway, putting binders in their mailbox, getting a sharpened pencil, and starting morning work. Having an entry routine maximizes time and frees you up from multitasking.
