After watching this excellent report twice, I’ve concluded that was just a sad sequence of events, involving a combination of racism, misunderstandings, and plain administrative errors. The assistant coach (who presumably is white) apparently sent out a message (that was intended for his friends) on the baseball team’s group chat. Even if it was accidental, these days there’s no option but to fire any public official who uses a racial slur. Then, for whatever reason, the head coach decides to institute a new policy that prohibits anyone, including players, from using that slur. Okay, we should understand that a slur is a slur, even if it’s spoken by someone of that race and isn’t intended as a slur, but, really, how else could the Tuckers and Reillys (whose sons were the only black kids on the team, and therefore likely the only kids who used that slur in public) have understood the new policy except as an unspoken attack on their sons? Then, the Reillys filed an action to get the head coach removed, for physically attacking their son. It’s unclear whether, and to what degree, the school administration investigated, before quickly firing him. The school administration then added kerosene to this smoldering mess by refusing to announce the results of any investigation or even providing some sort of explanation for the firing. Finally, another assistant coach strikes the match by organizing a walkout in support of the fired head coach; however, the assistant coach contacts everyone on the team EXCEPT the black kids, and, by juggling the batting order without warning, arranges the walkout so that ONLY the two black kids are actually on the field! There’s really only one voice of reason here, and that’s Ms. Gittens, the former school board member. As she notes, we have to teach EVERYONE that this word is a racial slur, regardless of who speaks it; however, we can only teach that lesson if we are allowed to teach actual history, not just the redacted version!
as a lee county resident i’m disgusted but not surprised. Shame on every adult negatively involved and especially shame on the school board. May justice prevail for these young men and their families.

The one parent that made the comment " ... The kids are finally standing up for themselves" is missing the point of the entire situation and is in denial.
This is a fail by ALL ADULTS involved. Kids are emotional and compulsive. Which is why the statement, “if ____ jumped off a bridge would you? The answer is YES! The kids weren’t racially motivated. They were distraught about their coach being fired. So they wanted to support THAT! But the adults made it racial when they put the 2 black kids 1,2 who had NEVER been one and 2. Put them on that field and staged that walk out. The adults allowed that perception to happen. As well selfishly used the kids to further their agenda. Threw away a whole season of growth and development in the sport. To defend someone who was ACTUALLY IN THE WRONG. Shame on those parents.
Coach deserved to fired for saying the N-word. You can't do that end of story. Even if he didn't mean to send it to the team or use a hard R at the end of it. It is unacceptable language for a person with authority With that being said I have some questions. Were the players and parents notified why the coach was fired? The story makes it unclear? It would have been nice to hear the other players'/ parents' side of the story. Seems from comments from the team (in this thread) that there was more nuance than was being alluded to in the video.
I mean it shouldn’t be that difficult to understand why the coach got fired. He sent a group text with the “N” word which I’m sure all the parents either heard about or saw on their kids phones which would result with any person in education (teacher, counselor, principal, etc.) getting fired for. Also with the way the walkout was staged they knew exactly why he was fired too. They likely blame the two colored kids for possibly alerting the AD about said text. So their retaliation was to humiliate those two kids by having the rest of the team walk out on them. Disgusting behavior smh
the walkout out wasn’t for the coach who said n word. the walkout was for head coach being suspended from coaching for couple games for him being hard on a player which in any sport all coaches are hard on the players that they know can preform better cause they care about there future in the game. and there coach was the whole teams family as much as the players were each others family.

What people fail to grasp about the N word is that it's not okay for black people to use it because of the color of their skin. It has nothing whatsoever to do with race. It has to do with the fact that they were forced to develop their own culture parallel to American culture, because for most of the history of the United States, they were not welcome to participate in American culture. That's what people don't understand when they say things like, "Why is it okay to have BET? You wouldn't like it if there was a white only TV station." It's a cultural distinction - not a racial one.

the walkout absolutely had the founding basis of racism. maybe jackson’s personal reasons to explain the walkout weren’t racist but the entirety of it was based on racism. if it wasn’t, then why were madrid and tate excluded from it? the parents say that they had no idea why the coach was removed yet didn’t include tate who was the “reason” the head coach was removed and it seemed the team blamed madrid for the assistant coach being removed. it was ABSOLUTELY with no doubt in my mind racist. these boys and parents should be ashamed of themselves.

It isn't just an insult, it isn't just a word, but a thing that can ruin relationships, destroy trust, and create more and more questions that confuse and anger everyone. Many of these students just don't realize that impact it leaves because they've never felt it themselves. That mom is so shameful. Imagine teaching your son that this is okay.
I can’t lie as a parent to see my kid left out on the field and everyone walk out like that change schools villain arch begins !

Just graduating 3 years ago in lee county, it doesn’t surprise me this happened just last year with the attitude of some “adults” in this city
Thank you for bringing this to light 😢!
It is unacceptable language for a person with authority
With that being said I have some questions.

I honestly believe he had to have been pressured by the other Faculty to participate, because that isn’t the Keeth I know! But, he also should have stood with those boys, and risked his career instead of letting those boys walk!!
I understand the life lesson Madrid’s parents are trying to teach him by staying there. But my heart breaks for the compounding effect of him not being able to leave a traumatic environment. I wish the best for him and I hope the federal lawsuit brings some heat to the laws in Florida that are enabling the disparity and racism to continue unexamined in the culture. All it does is provide cover for racists to keep their backwards beliefs.

I played lacrosse in 2015 at a rival high school of fort myers, and i remember one of our assitant coaches got let go mid season due to some accusations against him from some other teams, we didnt do anything like a walkout or leave the field, what we did was go out and put forth our best effort every single game, as he would have wanted to. Unfortunately we failed to capture a district title, but we can say thay we put forth everything we had that season, which was probably the best season my school ever had in lacrosse
Jackson and his mother are so ignorant but so well spoken they definitely believe what they’re saying. It’s easy being biracial, but white passing to say you condemn what your coach has said but he’s a good person because you “know” him when you’ve never felt discrimination based on your skin color.
This is heart breaking
Buddy said typo 😂
Absolute failure by the school athletic department, coaches, and parents. I can't completely blame the kids, many were obviously parroting their parents' sick mindsets. An overall issue in society today. Lack of thinking for ones' self. Great job Jackson!
