Brilliant. Anywhere But Westminster episodes have often led inevtiablty to community organisations working at the grassroots, generating hope in the midst of such deep difficulty, so its wonderful to see the Guardian go into fundraising partnership mode for Locality - perfect combination.
I want to weep at what has been allowed to happen to our once great country....but equally I am so proud of the efforts of normal people working together to overcome the policies of austerity caused by this cesspool of a tory government.

The thing with food banks and such is what happens when no one can afford the current cost of living and have no extra money spare to give to these food banks or everyone is just barely surviving or less? And no, higher taxes will not work as higher income salaries is seeing a tax rate of 75% already, when you include VAT, council tax, inheritance tax, road tax, CGT etc to income tax, so nothing more to gain unless people are literally taxed to death.

Maybe it's my math, but that last project doesn't add up. It cost 5m to build, but is only going to yeild 100,K per year for 25 years? At that rate it would have been more efficien to just give the 5m to the community
Just about to say that! I thought they must have made a mistake but I checked on their website and it is indeed 5m outlay (actually a bit under) and then £100k per year revenue. Over 25 years they wouldn't even pay off the initial outlay. There must be more to it otherwise why not give the 5m to the community as you say.
That's what happens when a country spend more money than they earn year after year, decade after decade. Sooner or later it needs to stop, it has not stopped yet. When it stops that's when the REAL problems start, you have seen nothing yet.

It’s a constitutional monarchy so the PM and in general Parliament has the most direct influence now. King Charles and the royals in general are figureheads and cannot engage in political activities because they have little to no power.

How will the investors in the Bristol wind turbine benefit, when it’s costing £5,000,000 to build, yet will only bring in £2,500,000 over the 25 years?
I'm guessing a large part of the funding came from a government grant, which allows the project to make a loss and national grid to rob everyone blind, by paying absolutely nothing for the electricity generated

£100,000 is the profit that they get, it's only a percentage of the overall gains. I can only assume that the rest of the money goes into paying off the initial cost and cover maintenance.
@@trildi unless I am missing something but the journalist was clear when he said it would produce "£100,000 a year for 25 years" he said nothing about after paying off investors, but I presume that is what have to take into consideration as he wasn't explicit in his reporting.
I don't have much time for the Guardian normally after the seeing their platforming of culture war propagandists and vilification of Corbyn but this series and John Harris's journalism are excellent. I'm not feeling a shred of optimism personally but I'll keep watching and hoping.
In our daily working lives, if something repeatedly fails, you try to fix it by making changes, adjustments, re evaluate and use an iterative approach like Kolb's cycle, to 'seal in' improvements. We weren't rich,lived in a tiny house but always had food and clothes .

Thank you for showing this, in tough times people need hope that there is help and people who care. Our local Lions has asked those who can do so to donate their winter heating allowance so that it can be used for those in need. Lots of people have done so, those of us who are fortunate must share what we can.
I'm a single man, 27 years old, no money, no food, officially homeless and staying outside sometimes and on sofas other times, but yeah keep on looking after every other demographic, this country has abandoned us, merry Christmas
Please please please pitch to turn this into a TV series. These stories are vitally important and need more time and a wider audience.

Maybe it's my math, but that last project doesn't add up. It cost 5m to build, but is only going to yeild 100,K per year for 25 years? At that rate it would have been more efficien to just give the 5m to the community

I thought they must have made a mistake but I checked on their website and it is indeed 5m outlay (actually a bit under) and then £100k per year revenue. Over 25 years they wouldn't even pay off the initial outlay. There must be more to it otherwise why not give the 5m to the community as you say.

I consider the UK a second world country now, in the third world there is no currency as such but everyone must pull together if they want to survive.

That's what happens when a country spend more money than they earn year after year, decade after decade. Sooner or later it needs to stop, it has not stopped yet. When it stops that's when the REAL problems start, you have seen nothing yet.

The true spirit of the British
Boilers on wall, rads,working pipes, and people can't use it, wiring in the walls and ceiling yet light bulbs can't be turned on, tracks laid, and trains running yet cost a lot of money meaning people can't use then, and people moving from choosing what they want at a supermarket to queuing for a food bank hoping to get something.
Remember this story when you cast your vote during the next general election.
This is where the Labour Party should be campaigning and supporting there folk.
The gov is filling the pockets of the rich while the poor continue to suffer.

I’m from Canada, and I know this may sound like a silly question. But where is the royal family in this?! Are they legally/politically allowed to take action on behalf of their people? Just wondering from a factual point of view. Clearly there is a need for intervention. I’m wondering what is stopping the royal family from taking action, when the government doesn’t seem to have a handle on things 🤷🏻♀️
It’s a constitutional monarchy so the PM and in general Parliament has the most direct influence now. King Charles and the royals in general are figureheads and cannot engage in political activities because they have little to no power.

How will the investors in the Bristol wind turbine benefit, when it’s costing £5,000,000 to build, yet will only bring in £2,500,000 over the 25 years?
I'm guessing a large part of the funding came from a government grant, which allows the project to make a loss and national grid to rob everyone blind, by paying absolutely nothing for the electricity generated
I had the same question, but presumably the £5m includes the money investors have spent on it, and the £100k p/a is all going to the community directly

Please help me with understanding how this is a win? £100,000 a year for 25 years is £2.5 Million for a wind turbine that costs £5 Million. They said this will be the amount that will get back to the community, i.e. the remaining profit after repayments to investors, etc.
Presumably he means profit?
£100,000 is the profit that they get, it's only a percentage of the overall gains. I can only assume that the rest of the money goes into paying off the initial cost and cover maintenance.
@@trildi unless I am missing something but the journalist was clear when he said it would produce "£100,000 a year for 25 years" he said nothing about after paying off investors, but I presume that is what have to take into consideration as he wasn't explicit in his reporting.

There is definitely a positive aspect of poverty. People are kind to each other and money is not always the priority.
I don't have much time for the Guardian normally after the seeing their platforming of culture war propagandists and vilification of Corbyn but this series and John Harris's journalism are excellent. I'm not feeling a shred of optimism personally but I'll keep watching and hoping.

In our daily working lives, if something repeatedly fails, you try to fix it by making changes, adjustments, re evaluate and use an iterative approach like Kolb's cycle, to 'seal in' improvements. Not so with capitalist economics. Why? because it works just fine for the few powerful people who benefit from it....
