Beautiful Michaela, you are an inspiration. So very proud of you and proud for you. Good bless you and your family, family of origin, adoptive family, dance family and world family. You will have additional opportunities, even better than Aurora! You go girl. Love you so much!
So today I watched the documentary First Position, because I don't know much about ballet and I was bored anyway, and I was truly in awe with every person that told their story in this film, but yours completely grabbed my attention. How you went on that stage even though you were in so much pain, even though you could injury yourself so bad it could ruin your career. I thought you were so, so brave and strong and I admire that so much. After the documentary I googled a classic 'first position: where are they now?' and watched a couple videos of the dancers. But then I stumbled upon a video of you talking on TedxAmsterdam from 2014. And I'm not gonna lie: I cried. The part about the pregnant teacher, I had to pause the video before continuing because it was too much. You've been through so, so much that no one, especially not you, should go through. The message you shared at the end of the speech was so incredibly inspirational. When I found out you live in Amsterdam, well lets say I was really happy because I live in the Netherlands too and am also happy you chose our little country to continue your dancing career. I know this has nothing to do with this video (and might I add: to me it's once again so inspirational of how strong you are after watching this video too) but I just wanted to share this (not so) little message. Also, I think you are absolutely beautiful, talented and just really frickin strong. Lots of love x
I totally know what you are going through, I partially tore my Achilles March 31st of this year ( my right foot too!) I luckily didn't need a cast, just an air cast that I could take off when ever I wanted. Fast forward to today my tendon is healed but my muscles are still fairly weak, however I'm not a professional athlete so I've been quite easy on the exercise. Good news is I'm back dancing and doing modified class. Hope your ankle heals quickly, love watching you dance. ❤️
I love you! You are a hero. You are an incredibly strong, beautiful person and a great dancer, your perfomances are breathtakingly beautiful. Get well soon.
Hello Michaela, You don't know me, but I learned of you since seeing the movie First Position. In September, I came to see you on opening night in Amsterdam to wish you well and I left my business card with your colleagues. Imagine my surprise when I found out that you had ruptured your Achilles heal and would not be preforming. I was so sad and rather moved because I wouldn't see you dance. My trip to Amsterdam came about because I am going back to school to qualify for project management in a week long seminar. The second seminar takes place in February/March 2018 and I hope you are well enough to dance. Please let us know when your performances are and I will try to book my seminar to coincide with seeing you. I know you hear that you are an inspiration to many young girls, but did you know that you are also an inspiration to the baby boomers and MTV generation (that's me, yes, I'm old enough to be your mama), who were denied our dreams? In my day parents couldn't see paying good money for their daughters to be ignored in ballet class, hence the reasons for so many singers and dancers of color on television, Broadway or opera! Yet, I still wanted to dance and got my chance at university. I was put back in the chorus, but was happy as the Blue Bird in Sleeping Beauty, despite the grumbles from my ballet mistress at how miserable of a dancer I was. My man-child found my first pair of toe shoes and asked me why I didn't dance. It was the lack of encouragement that stopped me along with starting a career I told him, but now I have you my son as my priority. As a helicopter mum and cheerleader (you can probably identify with this), I accompanied my man-child to his basketball camp in Serbia, only to be told by the Serbs my American cheering and general helpfulness wasn't needed! Couldn't I go to the spa like the rest of the women folk? Spa is just not my thing, but ballet is. One of the coaches saw me looking at your Vogue video and took me to his sister, who had a ballet school. Suffice It to say it was an incredible month! They called me Мама Елепхант (Mama Elephant)! I didn't mind because the training was excellent! Imagine a mum experiencing first rate training, corrections--all those things I didn't get in the US. When I jumped the floor shook and the windows rattled, but it was okay as I wasn't a teen anymore. Plus, when everyone jumped at the same time, it happened too, so we were a heard! Now, I am sitting here in Germany with a torn Achilles heal. I tore mine taking my son's class to the trampoline park and catching a schoolmate before she landed improperly after trying to do a back flip! Marta Karoyli would be proud! Like you, I've gained so much weight it is not funny! But you have inspired me to go on by this video of how you are going about your recovery. I'm off to find a palates class. My doctor says I have about six more months before I am totally healed! You give me strength! Thank you! Get well soon because I really want to see you on stage! Here is one of my favorite dancers, Katherin Morgan. She also has just had an injury and is very inspiring. ua-cam.com/users/Tutugirlkem Wishing you well! MaLinda
Michaela, first of all, I am so so so sorry to hear about your injury. You have all my sympathies. I just want to give you a big hug right now! But what you said is so true--that this is a great opportunity for you to take the time out and really focus on knowing yourself as a person outside of the dancer role, and just generally take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and all its demands. I am an adult ballet student and over the years, injuries have stopped me from my practice numerous times. In the beginning I was depressed and frustrated, and then I learned that each injury was there to teach me something. Recently I fractured a rib and that put me out of commission for almost three months. Injuries like this really taught me to slow down and reflect on my life. Each time I was able to dive a little deeper into myself through inquiry. You are amazingly mature in your thinking at your age, and I salute you for the growth and insights into yourself that you already have gained. It is important honor the self, and acknowledge all the emotions that come up, rather than suppress them. You mentioned PTSD, and I look forward to hearing more about it. I know it takes tremendous courage to talk about such things (I also am recovering from PTSD). So I just want you to know that you have my support. Lastly, regarding losing muscle tones and weight gain, I understand it is a big concern for ballerinas, especially professional ones at your level. From my personal and professional experience as a health coach, I have some wonderful methods that actually can minimize that even during periods of inactivity, and I would be happy to share with you if you are interested. Wish you a smooth rehabilitation, and strength in your wings to sail through this difficult time.
I found you only today and was captivated by your strength and beauty in self and in dance. I watched a few of your performances and it propelled me to search for more videos of you dancing - stunning! I was looking for a more current video to see how you've grown and come across this one. I stopped it mid-way because I cannot believe you are injured. I'm so sorry that you are going through this and know that you'll be okay. Okay, let me finish watching the rest of your vlog now ...
This happened to my mom and uncle ! They were both very athletic and had to get surgical repair so I understand your pain . I hope everything gets better ❤️❤️❤️❤️ love you! I can’t wait for the future opportunities
