  • Sequoyah Facts-
    🌟He was born between 1760-1765
    🌟He was born in Monroe County, Tennessee
    🌟He is the son of Wurteh, of the Red Paint Clan and Nathaniel Gist, a white trader
    🌟In 1809 or so, Sequoyah began working on a writing system for the Cherokee language
    🌟After 1815, he moved near present-day Sallisaw, Oklahoma, where his home still stands
    🌟In 1821, he presented his ideas for a syllabary to the Cherokee Nation
    🌟In 1828, the first newspaper printed in Cherokee was called the “Phoenix,” and is still printed today
    🌟In 1843 Sequoyah died of old age near Mexico
