She got ripped to shreds for daring to play Billie Holiday and that was before filming began. I remenber standing in line for it's premiere at the Madison Theatre in downtown Detroit. I think the first 50 in line got a free bottle of "Jungle Gardinia" perfume. I took my little sister and we got no perfume (I thought we would because there were not a lot of people in line). We walked in took our seats, watched the movie, and floated out like the scent of that "Jungle Gardenia". It was wonderful and boi did it take off. I was so proud of my "Baby Love"! I had never heard of Billie Holiday until all the critics started crowing. To understand all the fuss, I went out and bought one of Ms Holiday's 'best' of albums and er um well...that's another story!

This was an awesome movie without a doubt. I also recommend Spike Lee's "Mo Better Blues" which was just as awesome as this one
This is an updated trailer. I like the original 1972 theatrical trailer and tv spot the best.
It's about time. This movie needs a special 4k steelbook release.I have lot's of gripes about the slowness of this, but I'm happy it got a good Blueray release.

I saw this movie in a double feature with "Mahogany".
I do like the new Blu-ray trailer, but the old trailer was just as good. Now, Paramount needs to get “Mahogany” on Blu-ray.

A girl in line was waiting to see this movie in 1972 and told a guy in line that she was seeing it because she saw Diana Ross & The Supremes sing, but she wanted to see Diana Ross acting in a movie. She asked him if that was why he was seeing it. He said, “Oh, no, I’m only seeing it because there’s a scene in it where she’s in a bra.”

Andra Day knocked Diana Ross out of the ball park.
Why couldn't they both have been great both movies posed different narratives of lady day's life, Why do ppl always want to pit Black women together in some unimaginable battle. Ross losing the Oscar on proves that we have to honor our own and a s far i am concerned she has the most important ones, BET award, SoulTrain Award and NAACP award , Entertainer of The Century.. that's right century, NO Grammy or Oscar needed!
@@thewizboyDiana Ross is a pop diva. Andra Day is a jazz maven. Two very different women with, clearly, different fan bases. Andra could sing unscripted circles around Diana, and is the more apropos choice to portray and cover Billie, no matter the era.

If you know anything about Billie Holiday you'll know that this movie is trash. It is almost 100% fiction. The only thing true about it is the fact that Ms. Holiday had a drug problem. There is no mention of her affiliation with some of the biggest names of the day: Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Artie Shaw, etc. just to name a few.
Ms. Ross is a great singer in her own right, but did nothing in either voice or style to portray Ms. Holiday.
More fiction: Ms. Holiday was married 3x and each husband was abusive, including Louis McCay, portrayed here as a walking saint. In the movie there's no mention of her other marriages as if they never happened. There was so much truth to be told, but not in this movie.
An absolute disgrace that does nothing for the legacy of the greatest jazz singer of all time.
Take the time to purchase her real life story written by Donald Clarke, "Wishing On The Moon". If you read his book you'll never be able to view this movie again.

Billie Holiday's "real life" would've never been made into a feature film in 1972. Idiots! They had to "Hollywoodize" it. The movie is certainly not trash when you have of the greatest screen debuts of all time in it.
