Back then the majority of being on TV was just about exposure. Right or Wrong, the programs didn't want to go through the expense of having a sound person, etc. at least, beyond what they would normally do, or even risking a bad performance. Two great examples of this are the Beastie Boys on American Bandstand where they broke the mics and Radiohead (can't remember which show) Johnny plays left handed, obviously "taking the piss" as they say...it was a different time, not justifying it, but it was different. Also, Nivarna terrified MTV execs by starting to play "Rape Me" before going into Teen Spirit at an awards show and Elvis Costello stopped a song live and told the audience he was going to play what he wanted on SNL after he was told not to...believe it or not, these were hugely controversal back then...

+Deehvad This was a real common strategy for "live" appearances by musical groups on TV back in the '60s and '70s and the German TV show went for it, too. The recorded track ensures that nothing will go seriously wrong, and that viewers can go buy the exact song they heard on TV. Sometimes (not here) there's a live vocal on top of a recorded instrumental track. In this case, everybody's faking their performance, but Gar's drumming comes through a little bit on the audio (mostly his snare and bass drum.) He's doing his best to take it easy and just fake it, but during the last 20 seconds or so he cuts loose a little bit and starts hitting the drums like he means it, ha ha.
