- Time for another VS video. Thought it would be interesting to hear the difference between two PAF Humbuckers but one is in a Les Paul, and another is in a Stratocaster. The result is quite interesting.

Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.
After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.
Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)
#humbucker #paf #pickups
Thanks for watching! Which one did you prefer. Also apologies that my speaking voice was a bit quiet. I stupidly had the mic on the wrong setting!!
Strat sounds very warm, lespaul a tad bit brighter . bit not much of a difference.
2:46 the quintessential Les Paul tune slippage is beautifully displayed here. That’s the signature Les Paul hallmark.
It’s out of tune from the first second
I was surprised at how good the Strat sounded against the Les Paul, it had that lovely resinous harmonic drive that Les Paul's normally excel at. Both sounded great, but in this example the Strat actually had the edge to me. I'm surprised to hear myself saying that!
Damn! I love that Strat sound. Not as bright as the LP. But I like that. I'm more comfortable playing strats as well. So I need to build one of these.
Did we mention if the s-type has a 500k volume pot? The les Paul certainly will. That could make the difference in the brightness.
Good observation
That or the pickup in the Strat might be slightly higher output.
The humbucker really made the difference! If you get a Stratocaster with a humbucker you already have two guitars in one! Nice.
Both sound great. For me, the LP had more bite and strength of sound.
Surprised at how similar they sounded. Those pickups are awesome!
I prefer the strat attack, but they sounded closer than I thought...To me the biggest deifference is I play different things on a strat than I would a LP. I always thought it was the tone, but I think it's more of a feel thing. I have a strat with PAF style pups and It doesn't scratch that LP itch just like a coil split doesn't make your LP sound like a strat or tele.
Thanks for doing this video - exactly what I was looking for. Personally, I liked the added brightness and articulation of the LP. Both were excellent, tho'.
I prefer the sound of the humbucker in my Les Paul over the strat, but my HSS strat is so versatile I love using it as a one guitar for the gig type tool.
Nothing sounds like a Les Paul. That being said, I’ve been a Les Paul player for most of my life and recently picked up an HSS Strat and I am in love with the feel and the tone. It’s a bit darker sounding than my LP and has slightly less sustain, but is a much easier playing guitar and the harmonic overtones are different in a good way, probably because of the scale length. Definitely can’t replace one with the other but both sound great, as yours do here!
We live in 2022 everything can sound like everything at this point, it's not like in the 50's or the 60's where if you wanted a les paul tone you had to buy one because no one else was making humbuckers at the time, don't get married with brands, that usually works for me at least
Good choice if you need a StratoPaul!!! Impressive
I think that the Bradcaster is the definitely winner but the les Paul had a nice tone to but the Bradcaster was much louder and it really stood out. I always love seeing the Bradcaster in your videos.
Late to this one Brad...but thx SO much for the comparison video. And truly, enjoyed the Strat overall more in tone. I'm a lefty and recently sold my Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul R0 a few months back, because...regardless of it's amazing tone, I just wasn't playing it. But, still looking for a humbucker/bridge for that "rock" tone on some tunes. I'm gonna give your mod a try mate! Thx again!
Ooh let me know how it goes!
If you ever get tired of the humbucker in the bridge of the strat, or the thin strat pickup in the bridge Check out Kris Barocsi. He built a strat with a tele bridge pickup. Its not a tele, not as compressed as a humbucker, and it can crunch way better then a strat bridge. I had a hardtail laying around and tried it. It is a great unique rockin sound.
They both sound great but quite different. You've got me wanting to put convert my strat to HSS now. The Les Paul has a beautiful top on it.
Do it man, get yourself a Seymour Duncan if you can, i have a Squier with a Invader pick up, great to play some heavy shit!
Personally Ive found that the humbucker in a strat just doesnt get you that full humbucker heavy thickness for modern rock. I had to move away from an hss to a les paul. It was just too thin. It still retained some of that strat character
@@JT-gm4fk it's the scale length - you can't get away from that.
Guitars sound different, I probably prefer Les Paul sound. But they sounds much closer than I thought. It would be great to compare guitars with exactly the same pickups but in any case thanks for a great video
That Bradcaster looks fantastic!
The difference in volume probably due to pot resistance and maybe pickup. The brighter sound definitely de maple top.
I started with an SSS MIM Strat and then moved through every guitar I could afford and with all sorts of configuration in pickups, hollow, semi-hollow, solid Etc. But if I had to walk away with one guitar, it would be an HSS strat' for sheer versatility. But I don't at this point so one of each please!
I think the brighter sound of the LP is because of TOM Bridge.
Hi...thank you for your video.... please.... which pick up is mounted on the Strato?
Interesting comparison Mike1! Both sound amazing and I preferred the Gibson, more rounded? Then again the fender is awesome also, actually I'm not sure which one uggghhh! Cheers from Canada!
That’s why it’s great to have both! 😊😂
I mostly heard higher string tension on the Strat. Lower pickup high? Maybe. Not much between the two, if you close your eyes and simply listen. Good. My nephew thinks about getting a cheap LP (which plays and looks well), then swapping the pickups. I think he should get his "Slash" tone, no problems.
I love the fat strats,im a budget low player,i have a squier hss whit jb sh 4. In the bridge, for my standards is a great, and another economic strat eko s300 but hh 3 way switch.
What pickup do you use for your eko strat?
For the strat paf how about the pickup spacing? Paf F space?
Cracking comparison, I was a Les Paul man for years because of my affection for Mick Ronson, Steve Jones, Slash etc, but due to the weight and playing gigs for 2 hours at a time every Friday and Saturday night for nearly 35 years it was time to try a strat with either a hot rail or full humbucker at the bridge....wow I've never looked back to be honest...the Les Paul will always sound a bit fuller simply because of the sheer amount of extra wood it has sustain wise, but live wise the strat now wins every time for comfort and cutting through in a live situation slightly better than the Les Paul which tends to sound muddy at times to my ears 👍😀
The dimarzio paf pro in particular sounds great in some strats.
Strat sounds great!
Is the pickup a bit further from the bridge saddles on the Strat? It certainly sounds like it, even a quarter inch is easily audible.
Awww, feel sad for Mike2. 😥
It's hard to beat an LP if you want that PAF sound but it was close.
Sounds like you might have different pot values going on there! The strat is somewhat muffeled.
Awesome Yer Bradcaster edges it imo
Wouldn't hurt to tune the guitar
mike 2 got the boot
Haha he’s back now in my new video!
Broadcaster has it for me in isolation but the LP does have a very nice tone that may be better in the mix? Coming from a bloke who knows very little so pinch of salt.. Stay safe..👍🇦🇺
Edit: It’s a Bradcaster... Love auto correct...
LP Sounds fuller, brighter aswell, is it glued neck right? It usually gives the guitar better sustain.
It sure is.
Hey, is that little demo song you're doing at the 3 min mark an original? It's a bop, I don't recognize it.
Thanks for asking, was something I just made up. 😊
Awesome demo ! ⭐
What humbucker pickups are in the Gibson and in the strat ??
They sound really Great.
Your answer would be really appreciated.
Thanks.👍
What paf are in these guitars ??
Classic 57 you mean ?
He literally says in the intro.
Thanks so much.👍
It's really appeeciated.
I got it.
PLUS SHORTER SCALE ON GIBSON AND HARD TAIL
I can see what you're trying to do but I feel for me Strat vs LP is too apart.
I have a prs ce22 too. So a mahogany make body but with a maple neck bolt on with humbucker with great "spilt" sounds too.
I don't see a winner. But an hss Strat is up there as one of the most versatile ever, I'd put my ce22 alongside as long as you can live with the rotary pickup switch lol
To me the Strat has a slightly fuller, more middly tone but that could n just be pickups. The LP is a shriller for want of a better word.
LP sounded brighter to me but I liked both. Are the strings on both instruments the same size?
No due to the scale length. 10s on the Strat and 11s on the les Paul.
Interesting test. The LesPaul sounded a bit more resonant and slightly more defined to my ears. But you clearly made a good pickup choice for the bradcaster 😳
Definitely preferred the the Les Paul it cut through a lot better. Other than the scale length I believe the Mikecaster has 250K pots. If you wanted to you could use a fender double stacked 250/500K pot to make the Mikecaster cut more if needed and keep those single coils tamed at the same time. Great video Mike 🎸
Ahhh finally someone who gets the nail on the head
The humbucker has a 500k pot, and the single coils are wired for a 250k
@@MikeBradleyofficial This is really great to know as I was inspired by your Bradcaster build and as the sounds you made with it are so good to my ears, am basically ripping off your design specs for my own build! Hoping to get in on the next round of Mojo pickup builds. But don’t worry - you’ll still make yours sound a lot better than mine. LOL
@@kcd2120 hahaha love it!! Keep me posted on the build.
Different scale lengths buddy. More tension on the strat at concert pitch. Nice comparison though 👍
Yep you got it!.. it plays a huge part. Hope you’re good buddy.
What was the bucker in the strat?
The 500k pot made the Les Paul a tough brighter. I think they both sound amazing! Great job and great comparison.
Both use 500k pots son
@@srfrodoxd really? how do you know?
Strat sounds best to me.
I thought the stratocaster sounded better. Is it possible Mike 2 tampered with the LP?
Hahaha wouldn’t put it past that swine!
Strat is the best one
Les Paul sounds better. More complex and familiar. Sounds like a record.
That Les Paul tone is lovely, are you going through the Supersonic? Also are you using any pedals? Great comparison Mike. BTW I think Mike 2 would of just ruined it, he always tries to take the limelight 😂
I know right! He’s such a swine!! Yes going through the supersonic. The pedals are all listed in the description box buddy.
@@MikeBradleyofficial haha 😆
Sorry I didn’t read that, I was too interested in the beautiful tones. Cheers Mike.
@@MikeBradleyofficial HAW HAW HAW!!
That Les Paul is sick looking!! Love the top.
She’s not a bad looker for a 20 year old! 😊
The Les Paul bridge sounds more mellow and woody.
The Les Paul starts sounding good with high gain. Otherwise hands down for the Strat. Couldn’t imagine that.
Couldn't believe how much brighter the LP was. My studio is DARK. Probably 490/498's.
I have an ESP LTD 401 with Dimarzio PAFs(Les paul style) and its pretty bright too. Kinda Tele sounding
What Mojotone PAF? Was it the 59 clone or Classic Humbucker?
It’s a Mojo pickup not mojotone. I believe it’s his standard PAF.
Sound similar both
Having now owned 2 of both... I might prefer looking at a Les Paul but boy oh boy... you can't beat a Strat.
As always with guitar sound comparisons, this should be a blind test
I have done blind fold tests like this in the past. Check out my other videos. 😊👌
Just turn your back during the video, mate! 😜🎸
😂😂
Was the mojo paf the standard version (alnico 4, 8.2k) ? Sounded amazing. I'm changing one my strats to have Firebird pickups in the neck and middle , and a humbucker in the bridge. Might need to use that pickup.
Thought the Les Paul sounded slightly better
Is it standard to say "Paf" in the UK as opposed to P.A.F.??
Tbh, I say both. Haha
Gibson sounds out of tune or somethin
It seems your stratocaster has 250K pots while your les paul 500K. I personaly like 250K in the bridge as well as 500K in neck position (humbucker or hot single)
Which mojotone humbucker is that?
It’s a Mojo Pickup. It’s there PAF model.
LPs got more spank on the top end - 250k pot for the hum in the strat?
Nope, 500k
Even with the humbucker, the bradcaster still has strat sound. More rhythmic and more versatile. The Les Paul has more treble. Both are great guitars.
How is a tone more rhythmic?
Les paul more sustain !!
Poor Mike 2! Both guitars sounded great. I prefer the lower mids of the strat today... but tomorrow... who knows. I think in a mix the LP would fit better, as the higher mids might cut/fit better, but hard to know without hearing that.
Maybe throw in a Telecaster with a HH configuration for a 3 way comparison, 2 single cut slab bodies vs a contoured double cut. A 4th guitar and the SG adds a Gibson double cut into the comparison. I didn't hear anything that different that would have me prefer either as in the audience as a listener. Gibson, one could choose the Flying V, Explorer or even a Firebird with HH configurations. Addiional Fenders, Mustang HH for the offset body & even a shorter scale neck. Comes down to the player though, the video proved one thing, you sounded like yourself with either guitar. Go with the corporation that gives you an artist model and endosements. None of the perks of being a brand shill, play what you like the best.
Me, I actually prefer the noisier P90 over Humbuckers for live shows, recordings (studio or in-home) the quieter the humbuckers the better. P90's have the character of an imperfect situation going for it, so it's more of an emulated live experience, the way one would hear crackle from vinyl vs hiss from 8track/cassette vs digital mp3/any of the loss-less formats. Sometimes a noisy pickup, feedback is actually a cool factor that adds to the whole experience. The difference of being there vs watching a remastered/mixed rendition. There's no substitute for actually being part of a historical performance at a venue. Some like it that way, others prefer an FM broadcast. I think there will always be that for a live show, that's where I think the halagram shows will fail. I might as well be at home watching it streamed over the internet if it's not the artist themselves.
Strat ! 💃🎶💃🎶🇦🇺
Why you gotta be so rude? 🎵🎵
Don't you know I'm human too? 🎵🎵
The strat actually sounds best
There are so many other factors at play than the scale length.
No audience member would be able to tell the difference.
Les Paul sounds out of tune
Surprised at how dark the strat sounds. The LP is the clear winner.
Might be the pot values? If the strat has the usual 250k pots, that might explain it.
Humbucker is wired to a 500k pot.
The difference is nearly zero,
Les paul untuned... Nice video
As someone who just can’t get on with very much treble, the Strat definitely sounded the best to me. I wonder if the pickup on the Strat is a little further away from the bridge versus the LP?
Looking at them both now, they are pretty much exactly the same.
How is the les paul pickup sounding actually brighter than the strat? Oooh!! i can hear tonewoord nerds crying their asses from here and it's beautiful 😂
Hammbakka.
Wow, and probably at half the weight!
I don’t get this trend. Almost every manufacturer in 2021 has a strat-o-like guitar with a covered bridge paf installed. Especially custom shop or boutique brands. It can sound good but it looks awful. Even headless strandberg nx models have this now
Honestly I don't like the sound of either one, must be the amp I don't like.
HAMBAKA
Zayn Malik can play!
Strat with that humbucker looks just wrong.
LP is rauchier, Strat is tighter.
I want to convert my Strat to HSS now, but the purist in me doesn't want to. :(
Sounds like a good excuse to get another Strat!
"paff"
P-A-F. Not "Paf".
The Strat sounds much better !
I liked the strat more
This Gibson is authentically out of tune😅
Les paul out of tune lol
Jesus Christ saves us from our sin if we put our faith and trust in Him! we all sinned and fell short of Gods perfect glory (romans 3:23) and the wages of sin is eternal death! (romans 6:23) but the gift of God is this
john 3:16-21:
“for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
and romans 10:9-13:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
God is coming at a time we least expect, and if we put our faith and trust in Him He will gift us His grace and clothe us with the righteousness of His blood (but of course death could not hold Him, He is risen!) and we will have eternal life in His kingdom where there will be there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves you so much! (romans 5:6-8) but if we deny and reject Him and don’t repent from our sins to follow God, then we will have our part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. so hear these words, repent and believe the gospel! accept Jesus Christ and confess your sins to Him so that He will forgive you and give you a life with truth, love, joy, and peace. which will never fade away or perish. all if you haven’t done this already and He hasn’t done this for you already. also when you have time please you should watch this channel here on youtube called “Christ forgiveness ministries” and hear what they have to say, glory to God. God bless! ✝️👑💟
Wtf?
