living in paraguay now for almost 20 years, the first years in asuncion and now more than 15 years in the south, in encarnacion, i can say that paraguay in general is one of the safest countries in south america, and way safer than many parts of the usa and even safer than many european cities. you just have to know where to go and where not to go.
the microcenter is only busy during daytime. bolsi was a good recommendation to grab a bite. great food and u can just call, order it and pick it up as well. its open 24/7, so a nice spot to go for some great food even at 6am after partying.
the only other spot worth mentioning in the microcenter is the britannia pub, where you can meet many paraguayans and foreigners from all over the world.
just dont run around the micro center after business hours, it might get a little dangerous. and stay away from the cathedral area. if you want to take pictures, do it from your car and then move on.
the area around the las carmelitas and shopping del sol, called villa morra, you mentioned it, is a great region for going out at night, especially if you dont know spanish, and its usually quiet safe there. if you stay at the sheraton hotel, right infront of the shopping del sol, you dont even need a car to get to all the hotspots around.
another nice place to stay is the aparthotel lipa, in the same area. its run by an austrian who speaks english and can help you with everything you need, like getting you cabs, organize trips and give you alot of tips where to go and what to do.
just dont get confused with villa morra and fernando de la mora. you dont want to end up in fernando de la mora.
if your interested in sightseeing trips, i recommend encarnacion in the south at the argentinian border. its a nice base here to see the very impressive jesuit ruins or spend a day in pasadas/argentina. i wouldnt recommend taking a trip from asuncion to the south. its less than 400 km / 250 miles but it takes around 6 hours to get there from asuncion, so its best to book a 2 day trip or maybe even a couple of days more to stay in encarnacion and enjoy the sand beach we have here and the amazing nightlife, recommended during summer from november till february.
another place worth visiting are the waterfalls in foz do iguacu in brasil. you just travel to ciudad del este and then cross the border. way more impressing than the niagara falls imho.

yes a true warning: beware of microcentro by night.

I was in Assuncion before the Covid, so it might have changed since. During my 2016 and my 2017 stay, the city would empty on weekends. But on week days I felt really safe in the microcentro. I walked aroud on my own during daytime. I chilled on my own on Plazza Uruguaya during daytime. You have the occasional beggar but I never felt endangered.

That’s interesting to know! Do you have plans to return soon? It was definitely very quiet, especially in the historic old town. The only ‘relatively’ active places were the big two shopping malls in Villa Morra. But yes I would agree that in general it didn’t feel too dangerous, especially in Villa Morra where people were always walking with their phones out 🇵🇾

Hows about living outside of asuncion, are they some nice locations, for having a farm ?

I think there could be a lot of good farmland opportunities - there is a lot of open space in the country! But sadly I’m not an expert on farm land so I can’t help anymore 🇵🇾

I've been here but out in the countryside for years, but am going to Asu next week. I'll stay in the old town, you get a lot more hotel for your money. I do though agree for a 1st time visitor Villa Morra is more sensible. No night life in the old town and even I would not choose to walk around there in the dark

Yes the old town did indeed feel quite scary! But villa morra is certainly nice
