I love how competitive the students are. Such a great idea! I also loved the examples the students provided. It shows how well they understand the form, and its meaning.
I wish I could do this in class but we teachers were told not to do this as students are not really producing much. We are supposed to promote active learning by having students talk at least 90% of the time. The other 10% is just giving instructions, explaining grammar or vocabulary. I could use this game when teaching Juniors. When teaching adults, not many of them are willing to stand up no matter how motivated you are.
Thanks for uploading this. I find myself using this board race game activity whenever I need to revise the quantifiers 'many' and 'much' and the difference between the adverbs and adjectives as well. The students I teach are aged 12-16 and they love the game-like aspect of it!
Great! I will use it because I recently started to work as an english teacher myself and I love it.... but what I do more love right now, is the teaching girl... ♥ Greetings from Argentina, Lucio!
That looked super fun! look at the smiles and the genuine involvement from the students. I love this, will definitely keep this kind of activity in mind for the future.
Hello everyone. I am glad to watch these videos, which are of great help for us, teachers. I also like my students to get involved in highly dynamic game-like activities. I'd like to suggest something: In order to make this activity more challenging you can put the words' letters in disorder so that students unscramble them. For example "mslal", and students put the letters in order to form "small".
This game motivates the students about Comparison. There is a big challenge between the students. This method encourages the learners to assimilate very quick this grammar lesson about the comparatives.
One of the useful technique for our students. It is very interesting.I loved the examples the students provides. It show how well they understand the form.Iwill ure itin my class. Thanks so much.
Then you improvise... You get students into teams and you give each team a piece of paper with "er" and "more" written on top. You give them 3 minutes to come up with as many "er" and "more" words as possible. The team with the most words are the winners.
suggestion: You could create 4 teams of 10 - pin up A3 pieces of paper on the walls in the four corners of the room - or take students to other parts of your school where there is room. if you really have such larger classes I'd definitely ask your school to invest in two white boards positioned in each end of the classrooms
No wonder you came here. Your creativity in terms of coming up with your own games is horrendous. Why don't you improvise. Make 4 teams. 2 teams compete while 2 teams make sentences and then switch half way. If you don't have a passion for teaching, you shouldn't be dong it.
My students would roll their eyes, move at tortoise speed during the exercise, complain to each other in their own language, and then complain later that I only did it to waste time.
@son441 I'm glad you're enjoying our videos! You do not need to stop the students in the middle of the game. You can wait until the end when they students are making full sentences from the words. You will often find that the other students will correct their teammates while playing the game. If they get one wrong, they lose a point. If only one person gets one wrong and they happen to be on the team that won the race, I would call it a tie. Thank you! BridgeTEFL
Hello EFRENLIRA, The general rules are as follows: Add 'er' and 'est' to short adjectives (usually words with one syllable) or for 2-syllable adjectives ending in 'y'. All the best, BridgeTEFL
@naturremind Hello naturremind, You can use this activity in many ways. For example, in one column, you can write the present tense of verbs (ex/ eat) and in the next column, you can have your student write the past participle (ex/ eaten). For conjugation, you could write the verb 'to be' at the top of the board. In one column, you could write the subject pronouns (ex/I, you, He) and in the second column, the students would write the correct form of the verb (ex/am, are, is). BridgeTEFL
I've gotten numerous children's classes to just as enthusiastically participate in games like this for a small sticker for each member of the winning team. I handed out stickers to incentivize any action/behavior I wanted to see more of [and I took stickers for any behavior I wanted to see less of] At the end of the month or semester the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place students got a small prize. I never spent more than 6-7$ total.
@leonardo899 It's really up to the teacher whether or not they want to buy candy. You can also figure out other rewards that do not require you to purchase anything!
will writing the full word be more effective than just drawing an arrow towards -er or more? i know the game will take less time. thank you. great idea too!
@leonardo899 would you begrudge the little money a few bars of chocolate cost? It not only helps to demonstrate the idea of a race, especially with students of a lower level, it acts as an incentive. Anyway, don't you know it's just nice to give sometimes? And the reward's are many ;-)
hi bridgetefl - one question - if they make a mistake do you have to stop that team and make them change their answer? Or do you correct mistakes at the end of the activity (in which case does this sometimes undermine the winning team because despite being first finished they've made errors...?) Looks great though. Thanks for the video - i'll have a go at this one.
Hello that activity is just great, it really works out with my students, although I have a question: when we use short adjectives for instance small we ad -er= smaller, with the long ones we add more before the adjective but how can I identify which ones are short or long or are there any exceptions? for instance: Pretty-Happy- and maybe stupid, in this last one I have heard in some movies said: more stupid and also stupider, so can you plz help?
Yeah, children are slightly easier to motivate with the promise of a sticker or a points (which translate into money) to buy toys. Usually with older students, and a lot of time with my tiny students, all the motivation they need to compete hard and fast and well is bragging rights, haha. I've done lots of board races for spelling and word recognition, but never thought of good ways to use with grammar.
realier? what word did she use to describe the things that students place into boxes/categories - would someone clarify the word please because i cant make out what is is - thank you
What if you cannot give prices to the teams because of the school agreements?. I have been struggling about it. I am teaching english to kids from 9 to 12 years old in a Montessori school. By the way, I used to work at Bridge Chile.
Hi Arduinna, that’s a good point! Prizes like chocolate bars are not always appropriate, and teachers also may not want to spend their own money, either. In place of a prize you have to buy, some alternative rewards might be a homework-free weekend, a special winner’s crown or badge, or the privilege of choosing the music you listen to in class one day.
Try using different correction techniques rather than just telling them the right answer. Quick tip >< Thanks for the video; I'll use something similar to this.
It is very easy when you have only seven to ten students in the classroom. For public schools, we do have more than 40 students in one classroom. haha, Enjoy!
I tried this with a class of 25 Italian 17 year olds and it failed pretty badly. They wouldnt run back to the end of the line and because there was so many students in limited space they got in each others way and there wasnt enough room on the board to even complete the race correctly. Italian students like to cheat by the way. They are very competitive which is good but I cannot stress enough how much they all cheated in every activity I did. :P
This was great seeing an activity in motion! My TEFL course recommended watching this, cant wait to start teaching!
I love how competitive the students are. Such a great idea!
I also loved the examples the students provided. It shows how well they understand the form, and its meaning.
I DID THIS ACTIVITY IN MY CLASSES, IN YUMBEL IN THE SOUTH OF CHILE.......THE STUDENTS WERE SO ENTHUSIASTIC.....THANKSSSSSSSSSSSSS
"Your skirt is shorter than my skirt" - oooh, the shade

Honestly it's a great activity to check what we have studied previously

this strategy is great! I use it with my students. A suggestion when correcting student mistakes, it is better not to interrupt them.
Very very nice. I am going to try it out today. I teach in KSA and though my class size is very large 78 I am sure they will love it.
Great when you have seven students.... a Little bit complicated with almost 40 students :(

Hi, thanks for your advice, I'll take it into account.

True but It works, I 've done It with 36 SS

Relatable XD
What type of horrible student you have?
Sorry Teacher but first of all you must take control over your class,
Hahaha mine as well
Mine would nearly kill each other to win
You grammarians.....I love your class. I can use phonetics among other topics.
Great video!!! I'm about to take the TEFL so this is very interesting :)
This is very easy to understand I will try it out with my children. How refreshing also for the video to run without crashinf. Thankyou

But that first line of hers - it's grammatical rubbish. Can you explain?
This looks like so much fun!
Such a commitment. Great teacher!

Thanks a lot for the game, it is so much useful!
Thanks for the idea! Gonna implement it
That is such a cool idea!!! I'm gonna use it, no doubt!!
@leonardo899

This method is great. But does it work for 40 students in a small class?😢
Excellent game! Thank you very much 😊
I love this board game :).
Oh my! This game is really exciting. It's definitely a good technique.
Great job!
the way to teach , it's intersysting i hope in viet nam also have the way teach like that

About me nice and good idea
Really is so exciting
Really entertaining game. I wish I was there!!
"When challenged when teaching grammar rules can be to keep the lesson interesting." ?
good idea...going to try that today.
will writing the full word be more effective than just drawing an arrow towards -er or more? i know the game will take less time. thank you. great idea too!
It's really good! Thank you!
English lessons by Mukumova Dilshoda!
It is a great game! I liked it))
thank you I will use it in my class
Great job
I wish all the students were as enthusiastic as the ones in the video
Every successful lesson depends on students

@naturremind
Hi Naturremind,
Yes, the words are the same on both sides of board and in the same order.
BridgeTEFL
She really wanted that Hershey's chocolate 🍫😆 Joking aside that was a great activity
I go along with her views, Games = emotional intelligence

is there any book that discuss about board race games?
I am so going to try this out in my class. They are only 17 of them. DO the groups use the same list of words?
Nice give more ideas

nice game,i like it
What if you're teaching younger children who can't reach the board?
Thank you!!!
In my school : teacher: tomorrow u have grammar test if anyone writes wrong answer will get a strong slap...so be careful study hard at time....
Try using different correction techniques rather than just telling them the right answer. Quick tip ><
Thanks for the video; I'll use something similar to this.
gorgeous indeed
The guy said ``BMW`` which is correct.
The example at 3:56 is very accurate hahaha
would be great to have such tame students, haha
You can buy small candies, everybody loves candies no matter the size :P
Your skirt is shorter than my skirt lol 4:40
very great pls sent me more videos
Amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing :D

That woman really wants that chocolate bar!
@leonardo899 The good ones do.
OMG, Are you the same woman speaking in American Accent Training recordings???
Great
