Tour de Fleece vlog 2: Spinning a Yarn about Natural Dyeing

- Hello friends! It's July, so that means only one thing: it is Tour de Fleece! We shall be spinning wool for the next 23 days straight, or at least on the days that the cyclists in the Tour de France are cycling. In this video I vlog stages 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the Tour de Fleece where I spin the Zwartbles fleece we have skirted, washed and combed last week. For all this spinning we shall rely on Jillian, my compact spinningwheel, a Louët S71.
I have asked you guys some questions to have interesting topics to talk about these 23 days. In today's video we shall mainly talk about natural dyeing. So strap on tight, this is a wild ride!

What would you like to experiment with?
I have a pot of lichen in some ammonia, I am waiting for it to turn purple. If it doesn't, I am still going to dye with it and we'll see what we get.
An actual spinning wheel. I have two drop spindles and a large Navajo-style spindle, but they are so slow. Someday...! I also am considering making my own loom, very "Sally Pointer" style, rustic, from an old wooden pallet I have.
I love the idea of making those pom poms with a pattern or image inside. I just cant be bothered and have absolutely no use for them. They're just cool.
I'd also love to play with a drum carder, but I almost never spin woollen spun yarn. 🤷♀️
I Remember making those as a kid at art school, but can't remember how I did that 😅
I can only encourage the spinningwheel part of that 😁
To prevent my middle finger being cut off by the wool while making a plying bracelet, I recently tried holding a pencil against my finger and wrapping that as well. I could then first wiggle out the pencil, and then take the wool off my had much easier. (It was a bit fiddly for the first wraps though, to get the pencil to stay in place)
The rain noise is not bothering me at all! It's more like asmr :P

We really needed it as well, draught was getting too real. Glad it rained a few days now, forecasts are back to being disgustingly hot and dry
@@MijnWolden disgustingly hot and dry here too, only without the rain in between heatwaves. i do collect rain water from every roof i can, but it´s not enough. i am down to 2 out of 6 barrels, 400 liters each . We Need Rain.
And next year i will try and take part in TDF. Hopefully. ntil then i am glued to your videos ;)
For the moment I’m mostly enjoying finding and settling into my spinning comfort zone. My current knitting projects are kept within my comfort zone as well. The reason is that I’m slowly, sloooooooowly recovering from two challenging years health-wise and right as I’ve started working fulltime again, our entire team is facing extra challenges. So I’m focusing on balance more than on challenge.
At some point I want to investigate something or other with more ambition but I haven’t decided yet. Although the challenge might happen sooner than expected, of my daughter’s friend does handover a lamb’s fleece. Because that would mean praying for good weather and scouring it. Never done that before. Should be fun!

Oh yes, also lactose intolerant but pizza 🍕 😋 (but I use older cheese as they have less/no lactose anymore, cause the milksugars have been eaten by the cheese making bacteria)
And I also am trying out natural dyeing. In May I took a class (in Merchtem, at Herbalana) in your country in dyeing with indigo. For that I got wool to dye yellow, with plants of course, as preparation as we would try to get a nice emerald or turquoise. I saw dye stuff everywhere at it was so if addictive! And googling the plant and natural dyeing worked very well. I saw you had a video on avocado dyeing which I want to try as currently saving up the pits

Margaret Byrd youtube channel has the best lichen dye information in my opinion, plus lots of other dye content, including fungus. I have seen many videos and read several books and she does a very thorough and clear job. I am still processing and cleaning my windfall lichen from this winter's storms. No dying yet, I'll let you know what I end up with.

I see things and think " will it spin"???
So I don't think I should venture down the "Rabbit Hole" of dying.
I know there's plenty of natural things that I could dye, unfortunately I don't think my body would be able to cope with dying, it takes a lot for Spinning, that's the reason I haven't been around this past week or so. I have had a massive flare up of fibromyalgia and arthritis, caused mainly due to the hit weather, too hot and I suffer and the same in the coldness of winter.
I'm glad that I'm a one woman team for the TDF.

I agree with what you said in a previous video ( watched in wrong order) about Spinning and Pain, definitely don't think you can spin through it.

I got thrown back in full force into embroidery (maybe I should just accept embroidery as my Primary Craft and take pride in it!) and I probably won't touch my looms until the weather here is less summery, but your yarn shennanigans keep inspiring! Stinging nettle i use for fibres. Right now i'm making 12 nettle stems in to fibre. And i love it. I make rope and use is to make a bag using nålbinding stitching techniek. 😊
I'd love to experiment on spinning, bit i have too many hobbies already. 😅

Thanks for sharing the update on the colorfastness of your knits - I was wondering how they were holding up!
I believe your plant is actually a Rudbeckia, not an Echinacea, but they are related. We call them "black-eyed Susan" or "brown-eyed Susan" depending on the variety and what color the center is. :)
Then the People of the garden center have lied and probably charged more for it 😂
I am currently experimenting with some dark red hollyhocks from my neighbor's yard, and so far it seems to be working better on cotton than on wool. I prefer the blue end of the spectrum so natural dyeing is a bit less "everything is dye stuffs" for me. Indigo seems like such an annoying amount of processing but it layers so beautifully with red and yellow natural dyes that I might have to look into it someday anyway!
I have recently Found that cotinus+ iron modifier gets pretty close to something resembling Blue. Video due After TdF 😁
@@MijnWolden When I looked up cotinus and found that it's common name is smokebush I got super excited because my friend has one that they're going to prune this fall! I'll definitely have to do some research into iron mordants before then.
Best dye season is June, when the leaves turn purple!
I'm a new spinner so right now I'm experimenting with the way I'm spinning and plying! I just plied my first 2-ply today and finished one of the bobbins off with a chain ply. My next experiment is spinning enough undyed merino wool to knit myself a shawl or sweater. I bought 2lbs so hopefully I have enough, and if I have any extra I want to try dying with red onion skins!

Haha, just made a plying bracelet, while watching your first TdF vlog. I learned about it during this, my first, tour de fleece and just like you I felt the blood supply being restricted 😂
Sometimes I underestimate the yarn that still needs to be plied 😅
I am wanting to get into natural dying and been saving up onion peels… but I don’t know what I’ll dye get. Love the standing Saturday hike with mom, I wish my mom was closer for such a thing!

I’ve experimented dyeing with edible berries (in addition to the very successful onion skins and avocado skins/pits) and am curious re lightfastness. I have avoided botanicals that “require” alum or iron mordants. (Who can be bothered?) I had zero joy with goldenrod. Haven’t tried marigold. How about an experiment with marigold!?

I've read that edible berries are veru fugitive dyes? Tell me more when you have experienced their lightfastness in the long run.

@@MijnWolden LOVE the thrift goddesses!! The bit I have remaining from red raspberry is the leader on one or two of my Traditional bobbins. A lovely pale pink. Will report IF it fades!
I don't have it on hand rn as I am on vacation, but I have an entire book by someone somewhat local to me who did extensive experiments with plant-only mordanting. If it's of interest, I could see if there's anything on a berry + plant mordant combo in it once I get my hands back on it?

Yes the lighter brown elevates the yarn from plain brown to interesting!
I loved seeing the beautiful finished skein and also the sheep that the wool came from! My post TdF project is some experimenting with prepackaged dyes and food coloring. Tipping my toe gingerly into the shallow end, but I love watching along with your natural dying.
Just be careful, dyeing your own yarn is a powerful drug and you might just get obsessed with it 😉
Currently I am experimenting with color matching and extending the sleeves on a commercial sweater because I love the sweater but the sleeves are too short and I don't want to get rid of it

(Also, since we're talking about experimentation and you have a good amount of soon-to-be-landscaped nettles, have you ever considered spinning them? I've seen beautiful and lightweight yarn made from them)

The feathery plant you did not know looks like yarrow not sure what colour yours is mine is bright yellow.I like solar dying with montbretria not sure what you call it it does not like hot heat so is wonderful for solar dying lovely yellow.I am after some red dyes,thought I would have a chance to go to a wool show this weekend but .life has said no. Have you checked out dirty pot dying. Yet. You have spun a lot I have spun none this tour de fleece

I'm trying to grow indigo for the first time this year, fingers crossed! not growing cotton this year- next year should be cotton AND indigo! also doing some very initial experiments with hardy hibiscus cordage :)

Was the skein 545 or 454 meters? In the captions it said 454, but you said 545. It matters, because my guess was 550, and I was so excited I was so close...

@@MijnWolden I had the og and marine marina played around with Dino digs as an adult but it just doesn't cut it. I still feel ripped off to this day that they made zoo tycoon 3 3d and nothing like the originals. I wanted more top down animal content dammit 😂😂😂
I never played the 3, and I liked dino digs for the actual digging, but that's just a whole other game in itself (I like collecting fossils myself) 😁
