Let’s all take a moment to be grateful that no matter how misused Skarloey was in the tv series, at least he wasn’t banished to the Shadown Realm like Sir Handel.
In season 4 he is a sweet, kind old engine In the HIT era, he's an energetic, little kid In the CGI era, he's a hard worker leader and a little cheeky.... It's so interesting how many personality changes Skarloey had....
Can't believe it's been literally 20 years since we've seen the show in its glory years. We're all hoping to see it return to what it once was or become something that will probably never happen.
Having spent an ungodly amount of time staring at Skarloey's models to build my own I can attest to the accuracy of this video. One thing you missed however was on his closeup model, he originally only had brass rings on the back windows, on the inside. Later, likely during a refurbishment of the model, they were mistakenly placed on the front windows on the outside.
2:48 one such on-screen example is when he's running past Crovan's Gate in 'Home at Last.' One time, imo, where this deformity breathed life into these models.
The season 4 narrow gauge stories have always been among my favorites. The designs of the engines I've always thought were cuter than the standard gauge with proportions, like they hadn't yet grown into their cabs.
Great review of the history of Skarloey I got the chance to see his tv model on display at the Talyllyn Railway Museum during the Awdry extravaganza 2 in July 2022 and it was the highlight of the visit thanks for sharing this 👍❤️🚂
Man I will say skarloey really does have an interesting history. Series wise and production-wise. I will always cherish this video. Once again dude awesome work can't wait to see more of these videos.
This channel got me back somewhat into thomas and tbh it makes me remember why I loved the show and books as a kid. Just thought I'd say it at some point
Skarloey was always tied as my favorite character with Thomas. I recently broke, and watched some cgi episodes, and I think skarloey’s voice is perfect. I always imagined him having a deep and commanding voice.
my headcanon is that skarloey was feeling his age and rheneas so they play like they oldest days, so when the thin controler say that the blue moutan quarry skarloey and rheneas made a trick with peter swsam the made a avalance, so the thin controler sent skarloey and rheneas to clear up the mess, while clearling up the mess, they lear they lesson so they become old and wise after the incident.
My favorite narrow gauge engine would have to be Duncan, there's something about him that made him my personal favorite. My second favorite would have to be Rusty because he had the nickname of my dad's favorite NASCAR of all time Rusty Wallace.
The Skarloey Railway's red boy and namesake finally gets his time. It's a no brainer to say that RWS & the Britt TV Era have the best portrayal of Skarloey. My favorite episode starring Skarloey is Four Little Engines, especially for the ending.
Even though the Miller Era Skarloey was quite bad, it reminds me of his persona when he first came to Sodor. Out of all of his episodes in that era, my favorites are "The Old Bridge" and "Wash Behind Your Buffers", even though it focuses on Madge, who is also a favorite of mine.
I love Skarloey to bits next to Duncan and Peter Sam he’s one of my favourites of the narrow gauge and hopefully the 2D series does not try to add him to the series cause if they and they wreck his personality or there will be words
The face that Skarloey is wearing at 6:14, I call the "WHEEEEEEEE" face from the episode "Skarloey The Brave", where he gets pulled up the incline backwards with his trucks, then the winch breaks and Skarloey, minus the trucks, goes sliding down the incline.
@1:52 I don't think he was entirely back to his original personality in the CGI series, but he was definitely much more mature compared to the HIT model era.
"Goodbye Skarloey, your railway's a lovely line!" -Edward, a STANDARD GAUGE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE. Oh, you been down his line, Edward? Tell us about it, then.
None of the Narrow Gauge engines used the Wantage Tramway wheels as stated in this video. All steam locomotives used Manning Wardle Wheels. Duncan used the 2'8" version of the Manning Wardle wheel. All steam locomotives had the secondary crank pin hole cut off on the Manning Wardle wheel with the exception of Sir Handel. The reason this was done was to prevent jamming of the rods on the second crank pin boss as the wheels rotated. On Sir Handel this was not necessary because of the custom wheel rims that were capped over top of the original wheel rims increasing the width of the tire. Skarloey's buffers are Slaters Part Number 7906. Trailing wheel is part number 7832HR.
I have spent plenty of time doing the reverse, taking Bachmann's Skarloey and reverse bashing it back in Talyllyn. There is a whole cottage industry of 3D printed parts and decals that exist just to do it. It does highlight though two of the big differences between Skarloey's TV models and Talyllyn, one being Skarloey has coal in his right side bunker and two the lack of grab irons on the boiler. Other than that though... honestly I can say it makes a great basis to make an OO9 Talyllyn with and the mechanism is pretty solid. I just had to drill out some space to fit it with a DCC decoder and its been pretty good so far, its only issue being it stalls on dirty rail spots.
Cause in the books the engines of the skarloey railway were painted in a single matching colour to show they all worked on the same railway. For the TV series keeping in mind that toys now had to be accounted for britt and team knew a group of engines all the same colour wouldn't sell well not to mention it would make them harder to tell apart. So someone made the genius decision of having them all be a different colour. Skarloey in red , rheneas in orange, sir handle and Peter Sam keeping their mid-sodor colours etc.
Then not to argue, how do you say it? Luke Ryan ended up helping me with the pronunciation on Twitter so honestly if it was fine with him it’s fine with me haha; though if I made a mistake I’d love to know and correct it. I myself am not Welsh at all nor am I as familiar with it so it’s abit hard for me to get the pronunciations down at times.
