A journey in search of the “des” (country) invoked in the poetry of Kabir, a 15th century Indian mystic, this film interweaves the stories of two people from two very different countries - Indian folk singer Prahlad Tipanya and North American scholar Linda Hess. Where is Kabir’s country? The answer is elusive, as we journey through song and poem into these two lives, brought together in an unlikely friendship by the cross-cultural resonance of Kabir. Prahlad Singh Tipanya is one of the most popular and respected folk singers of Kabir in the country. A school teacher by profession, Prahladji’s life took a deep and profound turn when he first heard the tambura - the five stringed folk instrument. That became the gateway for him into the world of Kabir, and since then he has been tirelessly sharing the power of Kabir with countless rural, urban and international audiences over the last 4 decades. His village Luniyakhedi in Madhya Pradesh has become a destination for many seekers of Kabir. Along with his son Ajay Tipanya, Prahladji organizes the vibrant Malwa Kabir Yatra every year, where many singers gather and journey along with seekers into the villages of the region in a travelling festival. It is evident that although Linda is a foreigner but she is advancing towards the ultimate truth. It means that blessings of Kabir bestowed on Linda. My heart is full of respect to Linda. Until and unless the satguru is found, one cannot achieve. Thanks to Sabhnam for her wonderful creation.
This is a transformational, educational, culturally and spirituality uplifting project. I just finished watching only Chalo Hamara Desh and the simplicity and deep rooted research from Shahnam and Linda with blissful singing and explanations from Prahaladji has left me speechless and thirsty for more....with gratitude and respect.
I can't express enough, how much I am in love with this channel. This is such a revolution, these videos will be cherished on youtube forever. People after ages will find it and cherish it as a value of heritage. Thanks a lot for making this. I am feeling speechless while watching it, I am feeling lightness in my being.

Prahladji’s wife spoke more words of wisdom…than anyone else….
Tipaniya and Linda inadvertently, perhaps reveal their true natures.The simple and hard struggle of the Tipaniyas seems to have been upstaged by his wife reflecting perhaps the underdevelopment and ostracisation of women during Kabir's time and even the world of today.Not much has changed.But just as in the past,strong women stand out by their own simplicity, courage and native understanding that belies the social circumstances or the level of freedoms achieved by women of the times the wife comes off to be a loving mother, a devoted and an understanding wife whose quiet sacrifice and support helped make Prahlad Tipaniya to be what he is.
We also get to see how Prahlad is very naive and conscious of male superiority and typically remains content in his unequal and privileged marital condition.He is a singer at the end of the day who has tried to live the philosophy of Kabir in simplicity and honesty bereft of any trappings of organised religion but simultaneously unaware of the shackles of patriarchy he remains bound to.Linda locates bemused and unsure of a certain insularity in Kabir questioning the quest of the foreigner for the Truth, which he sings to be, very special and unique, known and felt by its natives alone.Linda travels from Zion to Zen to being a votary of the Nirgun only to find a Mahants of Varanasi who has researched and published Kabir still living in the time -warp of supposed Aryan pedigrees !Has Kabir become popular or is he being cheaply sold ?
I am also reminded here of Osho putting Kabir on a pedestal higher than Buddha as he represented the depth, wild and silences of the forest to the cultured garden of a palace that Buddha came from.
It is in the cinematic depiction and evocative imagery of Shabnam Virmani with moving visuals and cuts and fades to highlight the thoughts and ideas of Kabir that one gets a larger than life feel.In the end the film has been a most enjoyable and reverent experience.Thank you...

Your comment 3 years ago about a film by Shabnam Virmani, prompts me to
write this. Traditional societies have many more shackles that hold them down,
when compared to modern (industrialized) societies. This is not to say modern
societies are devoid of oppressive social, religious and cultural mores.
As in modern societies, so also in traditional societies, one has to pick and choose
one's battles. You quite brilliantly highlighted the attitude of Pralhad's wife,
in choosing to maintain the family stability. That may have been her contribution
to the success of the Pralhad Tippanya's family.
This brings to the forefront an uniquely Indian middle class attribute. They will
not "rock the boat." Every generation has demonstrated resistance to change.
This resistance to change is a universal psychological fact about humans. In India
is is particularly compounded by an irrational adoration of the past. You can
draw an Indian towards the past more easier than you can entice him to move
forward. Kabir's philosophy, for this reason did not get much traction
in India. My reading of Kabir informs me that he was expecting his listeners to
become activists for change. Instead what happened? His listeners became
intoxicated devotees of his mystical ideas. I did not see and reactionaries
emerge, that caused social change as a result of Kabir's message.
I am keeping my mind open about this subject. Maybe the Kabir Project may in
time infuse motivation for change based on Kabir's philosophy. Will the Indian
middle class, this time around, "rock the boat?" If Mr Tippanya's wife was offers
any clue, I do believe they will. The time has come.
What a great film.. please accept my congratulations as one of the best shot and laid out peice ever. It has got everything that is there to know ever for any seeker.. it may be a story of two beautiful people with Kabir as a backdrop, but if u look deeply it has all the answers laid out so simply which I took 20 years to learn.. I recommend one should see it and keep seeing it again and again and again.. many many congratulations to Shabnm Virani and the foundation for shooting this aesthetic masterpiece. 🙏
भारत मेरी महान है । In Kerala there was 16th century poet. His name was Poonthanam, a Krishna devotee. He says in his poem that to be born in India even as a grass is a blessing and luck. This part of the world has witnessed so many realised beings.... So many Kabirs walked through this soil.
