    Anycubic have developed the Mono M5S, a mid-range 3D printer capable of fast printing 105mm per hour. Not only that, amongst other innovations, it boasts a self-levelling build plate which also possesses resin level detection.
    For me the leap from 8K to 12K is the most appealing feature. So the question is, can we see a significant increase in print quality? Here I put the Anycubic Photon Mono M5S to the test.

    This is by far the most complete review I've seen so far about the printer on YT. The other videos sound more like an ad for the printer, lol. I ended up pre-ordering the printer with a bottle of the quick resin because the price was too good to resist, plus the features it has are nothing to scoff at specially compared to the competition. Perhaps it might not be as sharp as the D2 or the Mini 8K(s), but compared to other 10" screen models this has the best potential; 19x/24y microns (weird), 1,248 PPI, auto-leveling, decent build area, etc.

    Definitely a lot “it does this, but”.
    Not sure if you’ve tested already but id be curious to see the high speed resin tested on other printers and adjusting their settings to see how well they improve as well.
    Id love to be able to print faster but not at a sacrifice of quality in changing layer height which to me is a “well duh”…of course it’ll print faster if you set the layer height bigger.

    Any message from Anycubic if the force detection system will be improved afterwards? I mean as far as I understand it, the hardware is there only the software is not at its full potential.. i mean autoleveling is very nice, but i think it could even detect the release time from the fep, automatically decrease the lift time!

    I think Anycubic ran the horses in front of the wagon. Very excited to release a printer that could work better.
    They make a point of having more “Ultra Definition” in the name, but actually the impressions are not that good.
    Another thing too: They should improve 100% the online service, because I really like the brand but I'm changing to phrozen precisely because of the after sales and quality of service that Anycubic offers.
    They seem to serve you unwillingly, as if they were doing you a favor, when in fact they could be retaining customers.
    I'm from Brazil, where there are 220 million consumers… The 3D market here is starting now, if companies are smart and offer good service, they'll be very happy… Anycubic, with its rather decadent service, misses an incredible opportunity.

      It's dependent on the screen size. 8k at 15" isn't great. People really need to talk in just the xy pixel size. The 19um by 24um is a bit of a snafu, that still probably makes it on par with the 7" 22um XY of the SM8K. Doing so out of a 10.1" screen just makes it better.

    • @robguyatt9602
      @robguyatt9602 Рік тому

      It annoys me that people only talk in terms of the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and now 12K. It is totally meaningless to talk of the number of pixels in isolation. The real number is the size of the pixel not how many there are. You're being conned by the marketing people. At least the headline here mentions the pixel size. Although even that is misleading. The actual pixel size of this machine is 24 x 19 microns. Averaged, that is the same size as the Phrozen Mini 8K 22 micron pixel size. So you say you don't need more than 8K. Should a printer that has a 15" screen still only be 8K? And what are the reasons more than 8K gives diminishing returns? Give me some science behind that claim. Of course, there can't be without referring to pixel size instead of the number of pixels.

      @@robguyatt9602 I also see this a lot online where people don't seem to understand that 8K on a 10 inch screen is worse than 8K on a 6 inch screen... I think they think that the micron pixel size on the 10 inch 8k stay the same as on the 6 inch 8k, but then it would become a 12k or something similar.
      I've pre-ordered the MK5 because I could get it for 530 dollar with a wash and cure station included, so it was the cheapest combo for someone who wants to upgrade from a Mars 2 Pro. Well i can give you an inside "Eng eletronics" view on the market. When you talk about monochromatic LCD panels what people outside the eng view say is pixels, but we actually call it polarization zone which is a place with liquid crystal ( a non conductive material or dielectric material) that get influenced by the EMI from two electrodes plates.
    So WTF this means, it means that i need enough EMI and voltage to rearrange the liquid crystal in a twisted nematic direction.
    Cool and what? Well here things get more technical (Yes, they can), but we need to things here to make pixels smaller on LCD. We need higher voltage but we wil get a more thick display (and in this case we don't want this) or better LC (Other type of LC or more pure it depends on). This kind of things can get real expansive after some point and the solution is to get more area of electrode in the shape of rectangles.
    Actually rectangles pixels are more common than we thinks tube TVs had a rectangles shaped pixels but since our eyes can't see we rarely notice

    I'll be honest here: Your videos on anycubic (and other) printers have by and large been so positive that is was becoming hard to believe your claims of being impartial and willing to tear into something. But it's pretty clear here that you aren't letting Anycubic get away with the huge asterisks on their bold claims for the M5S. I guess it's just hard to appear critical when nearly all the printers that have hit the market from the big 3 resin printer manufacturers in the last 3 years have been so solid.

A lot of people watch my reviews and then spend their hard-earned money. I take that responsibility seriously. I'll tell the truth as I see it and have experienced it, but won't mislead anyone just for a few bucks of sponsorship money.

    Super nervous to watch this one as I've already ordered this printer. Thankfully it wasn't a bad review. I'm fine with some drawbacks and I'm upgrading from really old machines like the original MonoX so this should be a good upgrade.
    Not really sure about this high speed resin at £50 a bottle. I'm hoping to see some smarter users than me work out a good resin formula or brand that's a good match for the machine. My current cheapo anycubic resin with a bit of tenacious has been really great for me but need more videos from the pro's to guide me.
    Anyway as always I super appreciate Vogman giving us all the real deal in reviews, no shilling here.

    Thank you for your review. I almost pre-ordered it but deep inside I knew I had to wait... Just like you I think that "smart features" are only cosmetic and we don't give a s**** about status motor or others things like that...And about auto-leveling, Is it really useful? I mean I bought a photon mono 4k a year ago and I never touched the build plate since the first print! At the end you also showed that 12k isn't a real improvment compared to 8k resolution, so as you said, it is a good printer with medium build volume, but after your review I am convinced that it is not the big step foward I expected... So now I 'm waiting for Saturn 3 ultra launch, I think there will be no real innovation from Elegoo, but I was told that after-sale service is far better at Elegoo than Anycubic, and for me on expensive printers like these it is important.

      Auto levelling is a big deal. Don't forget, amongst newbies, 90% of failures are down to plate levelling. Suddenly the hobby becomes that much more accessible. But the MASSIVE deal is the Force Detection. We're going to see incredible things from that.

      @the_arcanum Рік тому

      @@danteinferno6513 Medium build size means the plate is the same dimensions as the M3 Premium or Saturn 2. It's a vast improvement from the Mono 4K plate. Just add the settings of one of those printers in your slicer of choice and see how much more / bigger models you can put on it. Honestly, printers bigger than that (Elegoo Jupiter, Phrozen Mega 8K, Peopoly Phenom) are another kind of beast altogether in terms of resin consumption, post processing equipment needed or printing speed. Bigger plate means a bigger height to allow complete retraction each time the plate leaves the FEP. It also means a lower print definition, from 50 to 43 microns, closer to what we were able to do with small printers 5 years ago. And they're closer to industrial printers with a 2K+ price to match... But if you really need 30x20x40cm prints, they're the tool to use.

    I have been going down the rabbit hole of 3d printer research. No hands on, just reading and watching a plethora of articles, so perhaps I am naive, but at this point I must say, I am leaning much more toward the Saturn 3 Ultra. The print height difference is substantial, and though printing that high may be very rare, as I am mostly in the 5e space, the fact is it can print 2" taller when/if needed. There is also the ability to just print to it wirelessly from my PC with ease vs having to deal with hosted site, phone apps etc - a painful thought. The accessory inclusions and quality seem to lean in favour of the Saturn too. All the noted for only a $20 difference currently. For my personal preferences, the advantages of the M5s are not as notable - plate leveling is almost a once and done thing or very rare so that is not a draw, the resin level detection is nice, but not that important to me. That failure detection feature though - that piques my interest. I can envision my frustration on walking away from a 4hr+ print and coming back to a failure.

    The rectangular pixel thing is pretty lame. 24 x 19??? I would rather have a smaller build plate with square pixels…
    But the other features are nice improvements for the price, and hopefully the rectangular pixels don’t affect dimensional accuracy.
    The whole speed claim is kind of evil. Yeah, any print is faster the thicker you make each layer…😅
    I’m also nervous that auto level force detection might break easily.
    All in all it seems good though for that res with that size build plate at the price.
    Just an aside, it’s not really a jump from 8K to 12K. It’s a jump from a mini 22 micron printer to a medium 22 micron printer. A 12K screen on a mini will give you the wow you’re looking for.

      @666Azmodan666 Рік тому

      it will not matter, it will be more accurate in one axis by a few microns, but in Y it will be more accurate than in other printers.
      We are talking about microns caused by the lcd panel, I suspect that a greater inaccuracy will result from an uneven light source.
      the same accuracy can be caused by arranging the model so that its edge will be in the middle of a pixel and we are talking about 12um ... does anyone care about it? after all, if martyca will expose it, it will increase the size of the print by 12um, if it does not expose it, it will decrease.
      there is no need to worry about such inaccuracies, even a steel rod changes its dimensions depending on what temperature it is at, let alone the liquid before and after hardening ...
      If such dimensional differences are a problem, you still have to take into account the shrinkage after curing and make the print larger and hope that you have calculated correctly.

    Big swing from Anycubic, slight miss, not too bad, unfortunately the gnarly "matrix UV array" strikes again, also that mis-printing of small objects indicates a 'bowed' (warped) build plate (typical on new releases from Anycubic, maybe some subversive factory worker throwing sand in the machine?).
    They're trying to properly implement the pixel-area peel-force algorithms but having trouble so they left it out for now, don't hold your breath, but since UVTools is open source, once they read this comment they'll get an employee or twenty right on it, LOL
    Just for the record, my Nova3D Whale3 SE 10.3" 8K printer is capable of great quality prints without failure at 50um, using a variety of easy to 'difficult' resins, with actual speed for the same layer height about 83% of the claimed speed for the M5s. Using pixel resolution is not a good way of judging the potential print quality of a printer, the xy micron size is far better as that adds the screen size in to the equation, where as straight x y resolution does not (8k looks great on a small printer, but would look nowhere nears as good as the 12k on this one due to size of screen and print bed). As a DLP user, this does not worry me, I am just waiting for a good mid sized DLP (Hopefully with load sensors etc) I'll stick with my D2 for now.

    Tnx for the review. The non square pixels are a no go for me. I hope other brands don't have the same issue or I will be skipping this 12K line

      @VogMan but if I want clearance in a circular object the pixels needs to be equal.

    I already have Jewelry DLP 3d printer , XY resolution 25 micron Z layer height 10 micron
    Prints thinnest supports as 0.010 mm (10 micron) under the print.

    Still waiting on that Mars 4 DLP review. People are reviewing printers that come out in August, but not the ones that we have at the moment. What's going on with the Mars 4. Absolute mystery

      I received a Mars 4 DLP to review last week. I'm not sure why Elegoo were so slow in sending out review machines. They were fast to the market... but slow to seek opinions. We'll have to see if there's a good reason why...

    Can you make a review on the jamghe high wax jewelry castable resin and how it prints on the sonic mini 8k?

    Looking to buy my first resin printer (have a few FDM ones). Which printer would you recommend between UniFormation GKtwo any Anycubic M5s? Price is obviously an issue but I can stretch my budget and get a GKtwo if it's significantly better.

    I have broke the FEP foil on my m5s just after first print when resin got sticked to the FEP instead the metal plate. Can i replace it with the one from 3MAX? Thikness is 0.1 - and M5S is 0.3 - but its not available anywhere - have to wait almost a month!

      You can replace with any FEP. Just remember to re-level your plate before printing. 😁

    Hey Vogman, and Thank you!
    I was about to buy my first printer, was looking for midrange and thought the Saturn 2 might be it. Than heared about the Satrun 3 and the photon M5 and i guess soon others will pop - Would you suggest I wait?

      I haven't reviewed the S3 yet, but it's coming very soon. I think waiting a few more days to gather more information will help you make a better decision 😁

    A lot of fast printers coming out. Note that Phrozen is selling ACP FEP and claims that gives you a 6 times speed increase (with a firmware change). You can get a Saturn 2 at bargain prices now, so I am leaning that way.
