  • The Momogun Rungus are an ethnic group of Borneo who resides primarily in northern Sabah, especially in Kudat. In this episode, Miss Borneo Ethnic 2014 - Claryssa Henry Ogodong - showcases the signature black Rungus attire. How long does it take to wear the complete traditional attire? Up to four hours or more, depending on the complexity of the attire!
The black Rungus attire makes its special appearance during festive occasions like weddings and Kaamatan. The motives on its fabric are formed by yellow, red, and white cotton threads that dance to the mystical rhythm of its weaver.
Surprisingly, the art of weaving is not encouraged among the young. It is said that an angry word from a weaver will bring sickness to a child. So, just as patience is required in weaving, the weaver needs to be calm and exercise self-control in her daily life. But patience is required of the wearer too since it takes hours to wear the complete Tapi!
Here's a glimpse of the traditional Rungus attire and beadwork, and the stories behind this treasured heritage of the Rungus folks.
