The 2003 Broadway poster was also designed so that it wouldn't have to redo the artwork everytime the cast changed -- that's part of why parts of the faces are obscured. It's not a value judgment or throwing shade or anything, it's just a great way to have an evergreen poster...and the fan edit was just an homage to that poster! At first I thought maybe it was because they edited her features to change things they didn't like about her face... but the only change I saw was they removed the freckles... and if she really has freckles as an actress and someone is removing parts of you to improve you... I could see how it would offend, but it didn't look like she really has freckles in real life, so those are part of the character not her. They didn't change the size of her nose or lips, or face shape, jaw line, nothing that would seem offensive to me. They just tinted her lips red and turned them into a smirk. I think it's because she's associating the wicked witch as being black because OF COURSE the witch was only ever in her position because of the color of her skin. So she assumes the edit was done because the person hated black people because the actress views everything in allegory.

You're definitely the expert here, not her. I would honestly love to know if you have read or listened to any other comment she's previously made about the show, the film or the character, or if you just watched this one video and think you now know enough about her to claim that she doesn't understand the story. Articles defending Cynthia completely ignore that Ariana's hand was moved upward, covering most of her face, because you know they want to spin it as a race issue and antagonize the fans.
Yeah, she doesn't even look like Ariana Grande in that poster, and I think that's an improvement (not because I hate her or anything, just because it makes it more mysterious, like the poster they're trying to emulate)
Ariana also commented on the poster edit at some red carpet 2 days ago and basically said it’s not that deep. It seems Cynthia is just suffering a main character meltdown or something…
@@DiosaDelOscuraAriana’s comments about the whole incident were very diplomatic, very graceful, she basically managed to show understanding for both the fan and her co-actress, while downplaying the whole affair. Maybe some other people could try to learn from her.
All the fan did was make the modern poster into a homage of the OG poster. That's all. I'm not a big fan of Wicked. I'm pretty apathetic about it. But even I knew that poster. They weren't trying to cover what's her name up. They just wanted to make a better poster. The modern poster doesn't even compare to the OG one.
This made her look ignorant of the property she was starring in and the difference between actor and character in a way that made Dan Quayle's Murphy Brown critique seem wise and well-informed in comparison.
The original movie poster is awful, and nobody is trying to erase it - just make something not unpleasant to the eyes. The green cakey lipstick is /yuck.
Have you had a chance to read the book? I absolutely loved it! I haven't seen the play. In the original story, there is definitely no room for musical numbers. ❤
This is one of the best analysis I have seen. This actress only cares about her showing her entire face on the poster because it’s ONLY ABOUT HER. Her blank stare says nothing other than deer in headlights… zero emotion. The simple movie poster conveys so much more emotion and depth than her eyes looking straight down the camera. How sad is that…
Actors take part of their pay in the size of their face on the posters. Look at any modern (i.e., Star Wars or later) movie poster, and it's 90% pictures of the actors' faces with some relevant scene from the movie in the background. Had her face been hidden, they'd have to pay her more.
It's a bad poster design, and the change of lipstick from red to green makes the character look relatively plain and boring compared to the stage play character. Contrast makes things look more visually interesting - I get a funny impression that the lack of red lipstick was actually down to the actress putting her foot down.
@@gagalover2k10 I'm not judging any artistry involved. I'm simply opining why the actress might be upset by her face being covered on a promotional poster, and/or why they didn't stick with the Broadway version.

Drinker has been saving me thousands of dollars, plus decades of my life I would have otherwise wasted in cinemas, for years now. He‘s a global treasure! 😅
I have to admit the green lipstick makes her look more like a goblin or alien than a human witch. The red lipstick color is a common way to allude to passion or emotion in theater. Wicked is definitely a story in which you would need to relate to the emotions of the main character and her story. The covering of the eyes would suggest a mystery that you would want to discover. The Wizard of Oz film used every trick in the book to use color to express emotion, magic, allusion and more and the Wicked Witch remained black and white in it. The world was transitioning from black and white filmography to color and it was moving from war and death to new life and rebirth. We will see how this turns out.🙏💕
The green lipstick was a horrendous choice. Red stands out from green, and her lips are supposed to be the primary focus of the image. She's supposed to have a knowing smirk, stirring people's imagination. What we got was, "Here's my face, this is what I look like as a person." It's the kind of photo you take for an autobiography, not a film hiding a mysterious plot.
@@NoNameNoWhereRed lipsticks is inherently sexual because women’s lips turn red when aroused. Green lip stick means nothing at all and is just an abstract outfit choice meant to match her skin, probably since black lips match their skin tone.

As a graphic designer, I’ve kept the original Wicked poster as my phone Home Screen for over a decade as a reminder of just how brilliant good design can be. That simple graphic with the relationship between the two central characters turns the original narrative of Glinda and the wicked witch of the west on its head and frames the new perspective perfectly. Actors used to see themselves as bringing a character to life. Now they see themselves as the character, the role, the story. We aren’t here for you, we’re here for the story.
It’s insane how many actors now see themselves as activists pushing a message rather than someone whose job is to render a realistic character on screen. Nothing more. Talk about how stunning and brave it is during interviews if you like, but turn in something good first.
There have always been narcissists like this in Hollywood. The real difference is that _all_ of their public messaging was handled by publicists and PR managers. These types would explode over things like this but it was in private, where they could throw wine glasses at the wall and nobody knew about it. Now, they whip out their phone and make public posts on the spot. Social media (ironically) is just Todo pulling back the curtain to reveal the sad truth behind the "Great and Powerful."

@@darrennew8211still they could’ve done it a bit better than that shite one they made
Narcisitic morons in Hollywood....No way! 😂
@@gagalover2k10 I'm not judging any artistry involved. I'm simply opining why the actress might be upset by her face being covered on a promotional poster, and/or why they didn't stick with the Broadway version.
..."the subtle art of shutting the f*ck up"... I love that and I will be stealing it, thank you
I can't look at that image without thinking "Shrek" or "She Hulk." Or maybe she is the child of these two?
Same, looks ugly af, would have been so much better stylized
Hey now! Shrek and (M-She-U) She Hulk are better looking and way more expressive than her!
Could be The Mask as well
Shriek definitely Shrek. That is the image I got.

So nice I can watch 10 minutes of Drinker to save me hours to go to a movie theater, so much time to use on worthwhile things, thank you Drinker for making life better.
You were going to see Wicked before Drinker's video, lol?
That's why I'm here! Lol
It looked like a crap fest movie even before she opened her piehole, not to mention that awful septum piercing. They're always rrreeing. You also save loads of money, not just time.
I was interested in the movie because I didn't feel like investing the time and money to see the show. Now I don't want to watch the movie either. 😒 Maybe I will dig up videos of the show to see what I missed... or walk my dog instead.
All I see when I look at the poster is "Shrek."
@@MarboFilmI didn’t see that and now I can’t unsee it.
@@NoNameNoWhereRed lipsticks is inherently sexual because women’s lips turn red when aroused. Green lip stick means nothing at all and is just an abstract outfit choice meant to match her skin, probably since black lips match their skin tone.
@@georgec5212 Their lips don’t turn bright red when aroused. Carbon monoxide poisoning does that.
I drove Eugene Lee for about 10 years before he had surgery and passed away in rehabilitation. Total tragedy, that was a man who took Wicked to a whole new level. I would drive him from Providence RI to Manhattan every Wednesday during snl season, then right after dress rehearsal on Saturday night he would get picked up and drove back to Providence to work on other stage design stuff, he literally owned (and his wife still does) an entire city block you would never guess there's an amazing mansion behind in the heart of the brown university area. He worked the entire time from day ine on SNL and managed to be behind the scenes of some pretty memorable plays and shows etc. A Great man
"Our poster was an homage, not an imitation"
Ma'am, you are doing a movie adaptation. It's more than an homage. And I agree. This movie is about the character. Not her.
I too thought that original broadway poster "smirk" was perfectly created. Subtle, engaging, and causing interest to see what the show was about.
Interests the viewer too, why is she smiling? What about? Very good stuff
It perfectly says "come for a bit of fun and mischief". Remember when movies were fun?

In all honesty. The hat over the eyes gives her the "Mysterious Wicked" look! I liked the hat over the eyes with the smirk. I didn't know it was image generated. It's a shame there's always push back from celebrities when fans have fun.
Wouldn't it be great if, instead of writing that hateful paragraph, she just...
"What a beautiful homage to the original poster!"
Imagine the respect she would receive from the fans!
Ye, how can a person be so out of touch? Must be substance abuse. Or the brain is fucked up due to some kind of cult or something. Yeah, that.
"damn that would've been so much better than our version. dude where were you 5 weeks ago when we made that poster?"
Say you are proud of your poster and respect the homage, eaaaasy.
That would require at least some vague semblance of understanding of and care for the source material
Impossible, when you view your life and the whole world through the lense of racism and victimhood
“The subtle art of shutting the f*ck up”…that definitely deserves a subscription!
It's a hard art to master, but an important one none-of-the-less.

What does you being a black woman have to do with a spoiled whiny actress? Lmao She didn’t say “The green skin is covering my black skin. It’s disrespectful blah blah.” Pulling the color card.
She’s talking about her eyes being hidden…
Nice “pick me” moment tho.
That „go away now“ sounded very graceful.
They are friends, not enemies, and that smirk and whisper says that they are both together in subterfuge and secrecy…they’re allies, and of the same mind.
Subtle, clever, genius…no wonder Hollywood didn’t understand it…
Yeah, it's almost as if we don't need eyes to communicate...
As a graphic designer, I'm sure the first lesson you learned was that subtly is lost on the masses, and 99% of the time clients will choose vain trash over good design.
@@someAholeComment True. True. I will always try the good idea with clients. Sometimes it takes, but you can’t fix stupid.

I wouldn’t watch it either. Just gonna be cgi galore with mediocre singing
I wouldn't waste my money on something that I could just go to broadway for. CGI mess.
Impressive. I know a large percentage of your reviews is comedic and expresses the humor in your personality. But this was an excellent deep dive in to so many aspects of this film, that acctress and current wokeness in culture. Well done.
The edited poster is 10x better than the official one
The original red lips are different better
There have always been egos in actors, but man I miss the time when they embraced their role, their character, and the story they are helping tell.
This perfectly explains current Hollywood
Exactly
There have always been narcissists like this in Hollywood. The real difference is that _all_ of their public messaging was handled by publicists and PR managers. These types would explode over things like this but it was in private, where they could throw wine glasses at the wall and nobody knew about it. Now, they whip out their phone and make public posts on the spot.
Social media (ironically) is just Todo pulling back the curtain to reveal the sad truth behind the "Great and Powerful."
i AM the Senate!
You hit the nail on the head ole-drunkard. Cynthia's meltdown strikes a cord because it's just so selfish and narcissistic. Me me me me me me me me ME! She gives the impression that she has zero respect for Wicked or the character of Elphaba and just sees the entire thing as a personal vanity project.
Industry is plagued with a bunch of Veruca Salts these days.
All I'm seeing is Shrek struggling with bulimia
Modern entertainment in a nutshell.

Glenda's whisper in the edited poster/original broadway poster: "Here is my deepest, darkest secret, only for you to know."
Glenda's whisper in the unedited poster: "We've been trying to reach you about your broom's extended warranty."
😂
OK, a thumbs up is not sufficient praise for your hilarious and true comment! Well done!
Slow clap for you sir..well done haha
I also like that the "smirk" on the original is saucy and playful -- it's sardonic, yes, but there's still a certain pleasantness and sense of warmth to it as well. (It would have been easy to mess that up and make it closer to a cold, cruel sneer.) Really remarkable how they got all that exactly right.
More better Emotion and acting coming out of that poster than her in the whole movie... I'm calling it Now.

She just crapped all over some fan's heartfelt tribute and now she wants to seem stunning and brave. What a role model for young women!
She's claiming she's protecting Elphaba. Fans of Wicked have been doing that for 21 years, we don't need a newcomer who admitted to only seeing it after being offered the role to do it.
They already messed up Glinda casting Ariana.

To the Critical Drinker: That was an EXCELLENT analysis of the original "Wicked" poster graphic. It was thoughtful, insightful and well-presented. The fan-made movie graphic returned mystique and intrigue to Elphaba Thropp that was completely sanitized by the studio's graphic. It's too bad Ms Erivo didn't stop to think about that before going rapid-fire on her Twitter account. The damage is now done, and I wish Universal luck re-marketing "Wicked" against the backlash.
Tim Curry was once asked what he thought of all the fan fiction made for "Rocky Horror Picture Show". He just smiled and replied, "We did it better."
That's cuz Tim Curry was a quintessential professional & absolute legend. That's why even his flops achieved cult status. He was the absolute best part of whatever movie or TV show he was in.
Oh and shocker no one ever gave crap about his LGBTQ status cuz it isn't important to his craft or who he was as a person. It was simply one aspect to who he was not his entire identity. That's why he's an icon today he focused on the work not the agenda.
@@bhart3321I literally didn't know he was gay until this very moment and he's always held a soft spot in my heart. His VA work for narrating A Series of Unfortunate Events was also great.
As you said, I never knew he was gay because he never made it his identity.

I always love that Norm quote about pride. I'm paraphrasing, but it should be fairly close, "Having pride in something you have no control over makes no sense. It's like having pride for being born with 2 ears, 2 arms, or a nose."
@@bhart3321 Actually, many people were curious about his sexual orientation, specifically after he starred as Dr. Frank Furter in the Rocky Horror Show. Tim Curry has never confirmed or denied whether he is gay or not. He said it is his business and no one else's. Even though there have been rumors of him dating several women such as Marcia Hurwitz (she is a talent manager) because they were spotted together on the red carpet multiple times and later rumored to be dating Marina Drujiko (a Russian model). In both cases it was never confirmed by him. He leads a very private personal life. He could very well be heterosexual, gay, or bisexual, who knows (and like you said, we shouldn't care! Nothing to do with his job or his content of character). But again, I think it's important to note that he never confirmed his sexual orientation. But yes, I agree, his LGBTQ status isn't important, what is important is how good of an actor he is and he also seems like a genuinely good man. He has that on screen presence that makes him hard to ignore....he is a great legend. So sad that he suffered a stroke, but otherwise says he is in good health.
Annnnd yet, ANOTHER GREAT 'o.-p.' from tha 'C.D.'! Keep-'em-comin', sir!!
It's like she wasn't even aware of the source material of the movie.
My thoughts exactly!
Going by the stupid things a lot of them say it wouldnt suprise me if she had never seen or heard of the play.
That would be wild, can you imagine working on a project for years without checking out the source material?
What a terrible idea that would be.
But isn't that a regular ongoing problem? Or even pre-req?
Given the state of every other IP, that notion might be very true.
Consider Marvel and Star Wars and Halo and frankly every other vapid redo of somebody else's better works: They're so PROUDLY proclaiming that the people in charge haven't ever engaged with the source material. It's a badge of honour for them to come into these things without any love or care or passion for the work. it's all about how it can serve them, not how they can show appreciation for the work or the audience.
