Finnish Horsehead Puukko

- The Puukko is a traditional fixed blade knife made in Finland. In fact the name means sheath knife. The Horsehead Puukko is one that has long been on bucket list of knives to own. This particular one is known as the Woman's Knife, due to its size. It is about the size of a common Bird & Trout Knife.
About that horsehead pommel: The story goes that there was a man called Juho Kustaa Lammi who served for the military in Vaasa/Finland during the time we still were a part of Russia. A cavalry officer asked Juho to make a horse head pommel for his sabre (or possibly whip, this is unconfirmed) and that the head was to be modeled after the officer's own horse. Juho accepted, being a gun smith for the military. Later he started making knifes, and thought of the praise he'd gotten from the officer years earlier, and started adding these heads to the puukkos he made in Kauhava. This was maybe 120 years ago.
I am a finnish knife collector, the first knife I ever owned was a 2-piece set of horse head puukkos (one large, one identical but tiny in the same sheath) that dad gave me on my 10th birthday back in 1978. I still have it. Receiving a knife as a present is considered a great honor and mark of respect here in Finland.
Btw; puukko in finnish refers more to this specific type of knife with the scandi grind and blade form whereas the more generic word "veitsi" just means knife, any knife. Be it a butter knife, puukko, combat knife or almost anything with a blade smaller than a sword 🙂
Wow! This is fantastic information. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome piece of history, I have a smaller one then that, can not wait for collecting more
I have a Kauhava Puuko, no horse head, a read handle, a lot of silver fittings, bolster, and silver chain. The tang is peened at the silver buttcap, and the sheath is just like yours.
I think that lil knife would be perfect companion on small game hunt.
bloodhound122, I agree 100%. Great size. Thanks for watching.
Great knife to add to your collection, :)
Thanks, Tom. I still have a couple more knives that I own and want to own that define a nation or group of people. To me, the Puukko just defines Scandinavia/Finland. Thanks for watching.
Really dig this puuko! Great video and review! Thumbs way up sir 👊😀👍
Glad you enjoyed it, MrSharp!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias i sure did!
About those old horsehead puukko´s. The handle, horsehead and the cap should be german silver.
Thanks for the info! I did not know this. Love the knives but I'm still learning about them!
Very nice knife Tobias
Thanks, Vinniesdayoff, and thanks for watching!
Still popular here in Scandinavia. Uniikkipuukot and Iisakki Järvenpää still make them I think.
It’s truly a timeless design. Well thought out and extremely functional. I do have a few modern Puukkos but there is something about the horsehead pommel that really sets them apart.
Thanks for watching. I always appreciate your comments on my videos.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias yeah the horsehead is still in production at least by Iisakki Järvempää, but theres nothing like feel of vintage ones.
I have an old one of those but it has a different name on it I just don't have a handle for it it's been rotted off and it's made out of brass the horse head and the little thing up there by the hilt
Cool! It's a shame about the handle but it sounds like you have a terrific project knife.
Do you know how to determine who the maker is?
I have a larger horse head puukko with similar head (very little detail), but the only engraving is on the blade and simply says “made in Finland” (and the same statement was stamped onto the scabbard).
I have one but my is like a finger long it's very small and looks very old it used to be my grandfathers i always had questions about it because i never seen one before
Is the blade about 2 inches (5cm) long? I believe these were similar to a pen knife and used for small chores but also often made for the tourist trade. Either way, they are great little knives and very functional. Definitely worth passing down from generation to generation. Thanks for sharing, Tony. Hope you found this video useful.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias in deed thank you for all the information and yeah it's about that size it's very nice i love it something different you don't see everyday and someday i can pass it to my son i also love yours very nice
@@Azteca619 , great that you now have a family heirloom.
Excellent “bird and trout” lol. Always wanted the bird and trout made for Sharp Fans, almost positive I ordered it but never got the knife. I could be wrong though that’s several knife groups ago. Pretty sure it was made by Queen and their gone, well so is Sharpfans so maybe I shouldn’t want that particular knife 😂
Thanks, Steve. And thanks for your continued support!
Well "Kauhava " is a place in Finland and what these Puukkos were called ..................
Ralf Häggström , thank you. This is great information. I love it when people share this information with me. I will correct this information in a future video. In the meantime, I will pin this comment to the post so it will be the first comment people see. I really appreciate the correction. Thanks for dropping by and letting me know this!
I did not try to "correct" you, those puukkos are the very few that where made to be "flashy". They where for many a "must" to show others how good they look, and of course to be used as weapons. Your puukko looks more like it is/was more made for USE and should not be "polished" too much, the "scrathes" shows it is a REAL puukko. Congratulations for a good specimen !. Yours; Ralf Finland. @@KnifeChatswithTobias
Ralf Häggström, all is good! I’m really excited to find out more about these knives!
I have the larger version of this knife. Curious to know your thoughts on its value.
They go for anywhere from $50-$200 depending on condition and who made them. Hope this helps.
I'm going to sell the 8 3/4in version of this knife. Do you know what I should ask for it? I can't find any info online. Thanks.
Did you ever end up selling it? I have a smaller one and am curious of what price to sell it for
Galatile handle most likely. Kauhava,
Проставки скорее всего пластик... А может и нет. Моя мечта...
I have a smaller one of these, with a more detailed horse head. Is there anyone who may be able to appraise it for me?
I know I'm not the one to do that. I usually shop around and look for similar knives and see what they are going for.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias thank you : )
Hey, how much is worth piece like that ? :)
They tend to run between $50-$100 in this condition.
