- Flying Lotus is one of those producers who creates an entire aesthetic world with the music he makes. Over the past 13 years he’s released four solo albums, and produced tracks for a ton of artists including Kendrick Lamar, Thom Yorke, and Thundercat. In this episode FlyLo talks to Rick Rubin about visiting his great aunt Alice Coltrane’s ashram, his peak creative hours, and why he directed a horror movie despite being scared to death by the Thriller video as a kid.

@@user-ob9zo9cr4c It's true! I've been in a rut so I needed this interview, for real :)
Worddd
One of my biggest influences when i first started
Been a huge FlyLo fan for many years. His album Los Angeles totally changed my perception of what beats can sound like. A complete wizard of the abstract, created incredibly lush and unique soundscapes, particularly in his stuff up to and including Until The Quiet Comes. Personally I have been less of a fan of his more recent albums which have a bit more of a jazz influence.
Absolutely. Los Angeles is a masterpiece.
Keep going with You're Dead. It grows on you. Still lots of dope beat-head moments a la LA.
@@Stefanune word i see what you're sayin. who knows maybe it'll grow on you. i'll never forget that it took me a good 2 weeks to get into flylo. first few times listening to Gramma or LA i just didn't understand that shit at first lol
tcma I agree that Flamgara is his worst unfortunately. I remember him saying in interviews that it was going to be similar to Los Angeles and I was super excited and then it dropped and it was just kinda bland. I had a hard time getting engaged with it
@@Stefanune or maybe its birthing a new era u know. Now he has to get nice nice at keys and then the album that comes out in like 5 years will be too good
Was surprised to see this but grinning ear to ear when I did. Fell in love with flylo early stuff a few years ago, never realized he did adult swims bumpers for years or the GTA radio station! He's a big name in music but underrated in the mainstream imo
Maybe it's good that the mainstream has it that way. A lot out there is pretty bland lately.
Man FlyLo is a down to earth man. Wish I could hear some Alice stories from his childhood!
19:13 to about 19:16 is probably the most inspirational quote i've ever heard... Rick Rubin really is a legend
I can’t express how much I appreciate being able to study this insightful conversation. Flying Lotus is an icon!
Two serious musical innovators!!!!
Could have name dropped Dimitri "dimlite" Grimm, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Dorian Concept when making that Europe/UK/LA connection.
Some of those cats were very important in the evolution of Fly Lo's music. And the further evolution in the electronic beat scene as well.
“Broken Matt Hardy” I’m crying.
Good interview thanks guyes
Wow - Amazing Interview - I feel like Flying Lotus was very generous and provided some gems on his own creative process - I love the part at 14:47 where he talks about starting a beatmaking/songwriting session with creating an original synth preset - a preset 'no one has heard before' to get the ball rolling -
More flylo is always a treat no matter the context
This is really inspiring just as a human. Thank you Flylo.
This is a great coincidence. I have been playing along with Spotify's Flying Lotus radio playlist all summer on my bass. And grilling, and on drives. Everywhere. I can't get enough of his work! Thank you for this podcast 🤘.
2005-2012 Myspace was Crrraaazzyy for a beat maker.
I was lucky enough to be intwined with the LA scene via Stones Throw. I remember hearing FlyLo's first EP around then.... WOE.
fly lo dropped so many gems....thanks for this good sir.
I remember being conscious of fly lo but never diving in until college a homey had him on vinyl and it’s been jams ever since
I needed this!
And after listening to only the first half hour I just want to make music!
Wow what a treat
Love love love this. Full support from NHM
ALOHA RICK RUBIN N CREW !! LOVE FROM KAUAI ....BUDDHAKISSS
Amazing interview.
I love his track “More” ft Anderson. Paak with Thundercat on bass
I never get tired of that song
@Another Dan it’s such a damn soul strengthening, spirit lifting, mind expanding piece of music!
Hell yeah me too. And the video is so cool! Also The Climb is a favorite of mine
Flying lotus for “The holy mountain “ remake !!!!
i knew he was gonna mention dubstep and the UK
This made it worth staying up past my bed time
Bro ... same
Jeffrey McCarty Shoutout to both of these cats doing it for the nerds and insomniacs haha.
London and Los Angeles been holding the state of the Sonics down since 06. Shout out to Lucky Me Collective and Brainfeeder.
Yes! End of the Century raw version would be amazing!
FLYLO !
He’s dressed like broken Matt Hardy in the thumbnail
"You got me hype now talkin about makin tracks" then they go to break. I'd like to think they had to take a break cus flylo had to go make a patch or something haha.
what's a "patch"? I've seen people say it but never quite understood what it meant.
@@scubadawg1555 in the way flylo was referencing its like a sound that he made messing with different variables he could use later for anything from like key sounds to a synth pad etc. Vs using stock sounds
@@scubadawg1555 just a custom setting on a synth (soft or hardware and or any random piece of equipment in flylo's case lol)
thanks guys!
@@scubadawg1555 a preset/setting of sound, basically
I’d love to see a Flyo Rubin record with various guests including the remaining Beastie Boys.
Thanks for pointing towards the electric prunes david axelrod album!
Flying lotus is now and always has been my biggest artistic inspiration. Flylo telling em he liked my music would be more gratifying then winning any award. Forreal lol. If anyone is in the comment and stumbles across this check out the music video I dropped today.
One of my best memories is when Steve and I really vibed and performed together back in 2006 and he genuinely liked my music…I literally said “are you sure?” He said yeah it’s dope. Best night ever.
Loving these podcasts! Is there any chance you might have Frank Ocean on the show? I don't know how your relationship might be after what happened with Def Jam, but, from an artistic point of view, I think that an interview with him would be great.
19:13 bro the stoner laugh is strong with this one loooooolll
FLYLO FM!
He’s so cool
when FlyLo laughs I hear the Captain
before 100 views
