    This video answers my question after so many fails. "If air bubble is needed?" the answer is don't use it.
    And I learned from the statement "copepods like dirty water but not too dirty" .
    Don't be deceived by some youtube video teaching you how to cultivate copepods. in the video the water is sooooo green, if you try to achieve that you may overfeed it.
    You won't need any other video to tell you how to cultivate copepods. You just need this video :D

      I made this video because other videos frustrated me so much. While I do make a ton of reef related videos not much "how to".

    Great video I heard copepods were specially robust specifically the Tigris and the stuff collected at the bottom is quite good as the copies will lay their eggs there.

    This video is so underdstated. I've had problems culturing Tigriopus and the biggest problem nobody ever has the answer to is how dark should it be colored. And for some weird reason, almost 80-90% of these how-to culture copepods never have more than one follow-up. Which I'm assuming they're just making content and it crashes, and nobody wants to talk about them. Thanks for mentioning that, I thought I was taking crazy pills, when very few who were successful at culturing them talked past the 1st month.

      Thanks. I just recently reset this culture with a complete clean out. It was starting to under perform but I kept a small amount of the crud at the bottom and enough pods that it looks like it's back on it's way to booming. They really do like it dirty but over the long haul you probably reach a tipping point of too dirty.

    Nice video. I saw the same effect when I removed the airline too. I use a 4 gallon square plastic container from target. I think the flow of bubbles drags the naupuli into the bubbles and they act like a skimmer and remove them. I would get a scum on the top around the airline that seemed to be almost all babies when viewed under a microscope.

      Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. Obviously culturing them is very much a niche thing but based on other information out there the vast majority of people don't really maintain their cultures long enough to really establish them, or they just don't care about them. UA-cam really isn't the ideal place to learn about reef stuff for the most part unfortunately.

      @@captivebredcanada I just moved house and still have all my stuff in temporary holding tanks, but I was running Tigriopus for 8 months straight last year. 3gallons of water in a 4 gallon tank, would replace a gallon a week with a gallon of phyto (nanno that I also culture). At peak, I was harvesting twice a month and pulling out 30-40k pods each time. I started with the same jar you did. Well worth the effort, but I got a protist contamination near the end and broke it down in anticipation of moving.

      As long as you don't overfeed or neglect for many months should be fine. They really are that easy. It should be noted that that's tigger pods specifically, other ones can be easy as well but not this easy.

    The pods are at the top likely because the oxygen level is low. Good Video

      Hey dude how is your culture going after removing the air line?

    I had a culture going in a jar that is just under a gallon. My first culture grew great using my own homemade phyto but needed alot to turn the water green. I eventually split the culture to have 3 jars going and started dosing reef nutrition phyto feast live, 2ml every few days, would be a light tint of green and would dose again when the water is cleared in a few days. I'm finding my cultures are dying off and getting very dirty very quickly. I recently read that reef nutrition recommends 2 to 5 drops per gallon so I might have been feeding too much but again it was just enough to tint the water.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Also did you see any benefits using a couple marine pure spheres in your cultures or dosing microbacter7?
    Thank you

    Hi! Thanks for the info. Is regular room temperature okay for culturing them? Thanks!

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada  2 роки тому

      Yes, regular room temp. If it gets really cold in a basement you could add a small heater which would likely increase production but room temperature has been working well for me long term.

    Is this type of copepods the best mandarins? They swim on the water column rather than crawl over surfaces. Mandarins are always looking for food on surfaces, not the water column.

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada  2 місяці тому +1

      This is the best type for new mandarins because they are big and nutritious but they'll never repopulate in a reef tank. They do crawl around on surfaces. Ideally you want them eating frozen or pellet asap but to get them going these do work. New ones I usually flood with baby brine and condition them to frozen/pellet at the same time because you need MILLIONS of pods and a culture of this size is probably not enough for a mandarin.
      The smaller pods are better if you're looking to seed a reef tank. Tisbe/apex etc. However if you're just looking to continue to add food to the tank weekly or whatever these are better since they are larger and would in turn have a higher nutritional value.

    How do they get oxygen if you remove the air line? Awesome setup btw

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada  3 роки тому +2

      Well the lid is not air tight. Remember they come from tide pools not the ocean so oxygen is not that big of an issue. I'm also feeding them every day or every other day and that splash of phytoplankton does aerate the water a bit. A few more months have passed and culture is still doing well.

      4-6 weeks and they boom. After that I would harvest every 3-4 weeks if you want to take a ton out at a time or every 2 weeks if you just want to take some. Eventually it needs a bit of a reboot when it gets too dirty, but you can tell that when they stop producing as much. This is many months later potentially longer if you're not over feeding. They like it dirty just there obviously eventually is a tipping point. This colony is still going strong.

      Yes. If it gets too cold they will breed slower but again they are from tide pools so they can handle a wide range of temperatures
