yea true that! i'm aware of this strategy, i always switched out to random for few sec if i see some fireworks with 10 garbage are sent to me! that's crazy
The game lets you target people in different ways. Having it set to KO will go after the players that are the closest to dying. Having it set to attackers will send a line each line you clear to those that target you. Building up your blocks to the point of you being the closest to die will get you targeted by a bunch of people wanting to score kills early. Combining that with attacking attackers will let you send a bunch of blocks to all the people attacking you. I have never played the game so I'm not entirely sure that this is how it works. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe you also get a junk multiplier depending on how many people are targeting you to make it fairer to the person getting sniped by all 98 other contestants at the start of the game, lol. Meaning, anyone foolish enough to attack him in this defensive HELL will get a straight-up deluge of junk. You're right though, a normal Tetris player would take a long time to be as fast as Tafo, so I'd suggest going a couple lines lower than his towers are until you're very confident.
He's intentionally setting up his blocks really high so he can bait people who are targeting easy KOs, then switching his target mode to his attackers and blasting them with garbage.
@@warriorcatsofmysteryclan2240 A.k.a., baiting, because people think he'll die quick and thus take the bait. I also wonder if he sends more lines stacking so close to the top.
Honestly wish they'd try ranked match making and instead of levels have your average win/loss/rank ratio match you with others because I just want to play Tetris with a new spin, not swim in a sea of sweat the likes of which I have never seen.
Tetris 99 was / is my first ever Tetris game, so the first 50 matches or so were pretty rough...but lately I've been adopting variations of this bait-and-wait strategy and assuming I don't repeatedly misdrop blocks everywhere, I've been regularly placing 10th-20th with a fairly sizable handful of top 5s. Haven't gotten a win yet (three 2nd places...) but I've been having a lot of fun with this!
This is just a risk and reward tactic. Personally I don't think its broken, but it definitely is ballsy and you definitely have the guts to do it. It plays on people's greed; people want to get quick/easy KOs and I've noticed that in so many multiplayer games.
it seems relatively safe considering blocks drop very slowly in the early game and if enough people target you clearing a single line is enough to get rid of anything they throw at you
You obviously can't make mistakes, but when you send out that much stuff at once it seems impossible for other people's garbage to matter. I guarantee those people targeting him were sending garbage, but it was all getting cleared and sent back at them.
I dropped 27 the other day doing this. They need to buff KO mode or something, this shit is quite broken. Or the new meta is just gonna be "never use KO mode".
The meta should be (don't use KO mode when you could get baited) Obviously at top 10, there isn't enough people to make gaming KO mode players worth it, so trying to kill someone weak with it pretty good. Edit: actually, just switch attackers as soon as you get sent 10 or so lines at once, regardless of mode, you have targeted someone who is already being massively targeted, and fighting back, and you don't want to fight anyone so empowered.
There's no reason to be in KO mode if you're not ready to send garbage. I think that's the mistake that a lot of players are making, either switching to KO too early or staying in it after they've emptied their board.
I just recently got into Tetris 99 and I'm simultaneously intimidated and intrigued. Your videos have helped me get better, but I have such a way to go.
I've done similar before. I usually build a 1-wide well on the right, stack up until I get into "danger" so that people on KOs targetting will go after me, then I start clearing tetrises. It never occurred to me that I could clear non-tetrises, though.
Have you tried using the double switch slide on controllers instead of the pro controller? I find I misinput a lot less because each of the move buttons are separate. When I started playing tetris I would constantly misinput hard drops on the pro controller to the point where it was unplayable for me.
I've gotten second place a number of times by doing the opposite, never ko anyone so no one targets you for badges and you go under the radar until you get your ass kicked in the end
I don't think the "glitch" you mention at 3:15 is actually a glitch, but rather because you're using a Pro controller. I kept thinking something was wrong with the game (lag?) early on when it happened to me, but after switching to Joycons instead it never happened to me anymore. It sounds like the D-Pad on the Pro controller will sometimes register an extra input by accident hard-dropping the next piece when you didn't intend to.
As you clear lines, is the number in the center of your screen how many lines youre sending? If so is that overall or to each individual person youre sending them to??
You can try to abuse the attacker bonus to target people with like 15 lines at once. A moment before clearing a line just switch to KOs and then switch back so you don't get the possible retaliation from the KOs
When your auto target is set to Attackers, the more players that are attacking, the more lines of garbage you send. A lot of players set their auto target to KO early in the game to build up their KOs/badges because KO targets players that are in the danger zone (flashing red). By intentionally building up your stack to the danger zone early, you can get all those players set to KO to target you, which, if you set your target to Attackers, lets you send a ton of garbage quickly (for example, Tafo sent 9 lines of garbage at 1:07 with just a non-combo single line clear!) to all the targeting players.
The "weird glitch" happens because of the pieces rotation design. When the green S and the red Z are blocked under their upper ledge (not sure if that's a good way to describe it), you can't rotate them in that direction. I also get tricked by it now and then and it feels like a glitch although it's always been part of Tetris.
how are you rarely miss dropping with a pro controller? whenever I've used one the d-pad would occasionally press up or down when pressing left or right
is kill credit given to who most recently sent garbage, regardless of if the garbage lines had actually been put on the board, or is credit given to the player whose garbage lines were the last to be put on the board?
Haven't played Tetris 99 but I've watched a bit. Tafo is abusing new players using KO mode. Using this method his board is always 85%-90% full. Using a 4-wide, even when it's maxed out his board is only about 60% full. I'm guessing the way KO mode works is that it targets who's board is most full. With a maxed out 4-wide only giving about 60% people targeting him with KO mode would happen a lot less often.
@@musicbox7601 In the end, it comes down to what is counted as a dangerous board. Either it is % based as you say, or maybe it is based on how much space you have in the center rows. If someone that plays the game a lot could clear that up, it would be appreciated! But if not, I will check on the weekend.

It's pretty simple.
You game the KO algorithm, so that everyone targets you, which makes the attackers mode send 10+ lines.
When your auto target is set to Attackers, the more players that are attacking, the more lines of garbage you send. A lot of players set their auto target to KO early in the game to build up their KOs/badges because KO targets players that are in the danger zone (flashing red).
