This is a good time to inspect for damage, too. A tab was broken internally that holds that little guide rod in one of my Lew's spinners and once I took that side cover off it fell out and just wouldn't go back together right. Good times 😮💨. I replaced it with a 13 reel to give them a whirl.
Great tutorial man! For those with a baitcaster with a free floating levelwind (does not disengage when you cast) like older ABU Garcia's, make sure to use oil, not grease on the worm gear or you will hurt the casting distance significantly.
@@lowlifeangler Love them classic ABUs! I have 4 of them, 3 from the early 1980s and one from the 1990s. Recently upgraded all the spool bearings (Japanese super bearings) making them better than ever. The newer ABUs are made in China and are an abomination.
@@HomesteadOnThePreserve I had a Red 6600 BCX. Had terrible PLASTIC gearing , I hate plastics lol , I didn't know it was China made. Bought a used 6500c for $85 ebay made in Sweden 🇸🇪 . It's great. I just use it for catfish/carp once a while. I'm mostly fish for bass/walleye/perch.
@@HomesteadOnThePreserve The reel from a guy had several of them from Virginia. Used them for stripers at Smith Mountain Lake. I use that on a cheap 8ft and a Zepco 808 on a 7ft for catfish. I nail huge channels witn cocktail shrimp
On a bearing has a sealed on the outer side and will only take oil bye the center of the bearing. In less it's a open bearings. Clean bearings with mineral spirits 🤔 even the dirt will come out and the grinding will go away after oil- grease.
A master class of a tutorial Daren. Or maybe just call you D. Which makes you D-man. That's your new handle. BTW I use Rem oil, just because I have it, works great.
Can I ask what camera you use for your videos and what computer and editing software you use? I’m making kayak fishing videos but I shoot and edit with my iPhone.
Yup! I edit with Imovie.. and I use this camera: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083CNLVN3/ref=as_li_tl?tag=wendellfishin-20&ie=UTF8&linkId=70e3bd5e654ccf6793fe97c49a8fe299&geniuslink=true&th=1
I have used sewing machine oil and grease for years. The stuff is made for high speed gears and applications. Never had any issues with using it.
Nice! I have never heard of that. Right on

Next video can you make a before and after fishing routine of a kayak fisherman. I would love to see that!
Thank you for this!
Right on.. got one for the baitcaster coming out Thursday
@@wendellfishing When I was home this last weekend my bait caster kicked my backside. Every cast was a backlash lol.
@@someoldguy109 Ugh.. got some videos on that coming out as well
Why didnt you do the drag washers ?. Inside the spool ?

You don’t need to Greece the drag cap?mine had Greece on the inside of it
Is it a good idea to lube the drag washers?
some reels are designed to have “dry” washers (no grease) and others require a small amount of lubrication. Refer to the owner’s manual
How often should u do this I oil my reels abt every few months but how often should u do all of this
Since there's so many variables.. I just go by feel.
@@wendellfishing Alr thanks
I heard a little metal scratching. Mite consider a toothpick when applying the grease
