Marcus Smart - Lockdown 19/20 (Great Hands)

- Marcus Smart. 2019 NBA All-Defensive First Team. 2015 All-Rookie Second Team. Those are the only two honors Marcus has received so far in his career, which is wild to think about when you see how important he is to his team. A year removed from his very first All-Defensive Team selection (to quote the Grindfather Tony Allen, “First Team All-Defense”), Smart has somehow upped his game on the defensive end of the floor. Reminiscent of Draymond Green for the Golden State Warriors with their (pre-Durant) “Death Lineup,” Marcus matches up with opposing big men, often IN THE POST, and often does more than just hold his ground. That’s made even more impressive by the fact that’s (only) a legit 6’3”. He is terrifically tenacious and is as electrifying as anyone can be on the opposite side of the offense.
Smart is in the top 10 in the league in deflections per game (ahead of the likes of Anthony Davis, Draymond Green, and Paul George), top 20 in steals per game, top 10 in charges drawn by guards, and top 20 in Defensive Win Shares (better than DPOY winners Kawhi Leonard and Rudy Gobert).
“When you look at Marcus Smart and what he brings to the table, it’s like he gives them (the Celtics team) swagger. He don’t care who you are. He don’t care if you 7’1”, he takes pride in ‘ I’ma show y’all I can lock this up’” said Kendrick Perkins on The Jump in November. That has followed through pretty much this entire season when he’s been out on the floor. Watch how great his hands are, how he rips the ball out of even the surest ball handlers. Watch how he’ll put his body on the line against much bigger guys. Watch how he leverages bigger players’ legs when he’s outsized on postups. Watch how he beats guys to spots and refuses to get screened (coverage permitting). Watch him do anything defensively and you’ll learn and grow. He draws charges. He blocks shots. He denies the ball with the hands and feet all angled properly. Smart is a defensive savant.
Special shoutouts to @SmartHighlights , @Timi , and @always_hoops .
Hope @FreeDawkins can make a comeback.

Yesssirrr
THIS is how defense is supposed to be played. He’s going up with big guys and guarding the best handlers and isn’t scared to get embarrassed. And he does it with so much heart.
That isn't scared to be embarrassed must be a new thing. Growing up getting embarrassed happens but you keep on playing. Whether that's getting posterized, or crossed over.
Yep
You talking about pat beverley?
jobber precioso I mean I guess the same thing applies to pat bev but he’s more annoying than he is a good defender. We know him for antics more than his play
Hell yeah. He’s a straight hustle player.
Man he is so underrated, without him the Celtics wouldn't win as much as they do
He should 100% be a starter
Sometime he's too lazy in screen switches and help defence or in the court in general, this is when he become a liability for his team.
Was gonna say the same, couldn’t agree more
@@marwaneouad6804 putting Marcus Smart and "lazy" in the same sentence is about the equivalent to saying that God works at Home Depot.
@@rainoffire24 i said sometimes, cause i see the celtic games not just the highlighs or opinions.
I’m so glad you made this clip because everyone else only posts offensive highlights
The first defensive play in this video where he denies Kawhi the ball and does a diving save throwing the ball off of Kawhi's foot is one of the most beautiful defensive plays/camera shots ever.
Marcus is looking like a rim protector at 6'3, thats effort and heart
Johnny Modric what do u mean he’s looking like he is one
I’m like 4”10.7 and get on my school’s b-ball team I have to guard 5-6 footers. So yeah, impressive but not that impressive
@@whydoiexist7029 That's ain't even comparable and you know it because guys in the League are by far more Athletic , got length and are strong
Why Do I Exist How old are you?
Nathaniel Wtf 14, turning 15 this September.
If you don't appreciate the type of player he is you not a true fan of the game
all defensive first team again 🔒
I love these lockdown defender videos
Smart > beverly
That’s a hard one but yea for sure
I like em both but I agree
You are goddamned right.
He can guard anyone he wants
Big facts
That ones obvious 😂
His ability to keep the ball in-play after the steal/pick-pocket and start a fastbreak is underrated.
The video we’ve all been waiting for
This is what you call “Outside the Box Stats”
Absolute bulldog. Loved him coming out of OK State. Other than Tatum, he’s the only Celtic I wish played for my Lakers
Me too
Lakers had him it would be amazing him and Ad clamps
Michael Li hold up.. you don’t wish kemba player for the Lakers? Jaylen Brown?
@@dizzy.m2 They can keep kemba. I'd take Jaylen over Kuz but he's to inconsistent for me
Michael Li kemba is a top 5 PG in the league and you wouldnt want him??
*This how people play D at after getting ripped*
Yeah except they just foul lol “this dude not scoring again”
He has a very rare ability to know when to swipe down on the ball. Other guys do it but definitely not as often and it's usually something that would be a foul in most player cases
Easily becoming one of my favorite players. High IQ, aggressive, and gritty.
Stephen The13th being aggressive means he will get more fouls, but idk why, but she doesn’t get called for all of the,
@@whydoiexist7029 Because he's smart (no pun intended). He uses techniques that don't results to silly fouls.
Give this man the DPOY
Krazy Nugg3t hell no
😁
He got it!!
@@Tyler-yb2qb he finally got it
@@krazynugg3t287 image picking Rudy over him couldn't believe it last year
I love watching him guarding big man. I'm always the smallest player on the court and I can learn a lot from him.
@James Robert well he is 6'4 but he is very strong for a guard at his size
There’s a difference of having to play defense and wanting to play defense, Smart’s an asset to any team he plays for.
The defensive version of Russel Westbrook
Mike Crisp that’s a good analogy
Pure energy and aggression
Nah westbrick sucks
@@m3gay Explain to me how a former mvp sucks?🤣🤣
@@jeffreyware8778 dont mind him man
Marcus "Winning Play" Smart
MAN! this video isnt too recent but hearing tommy's voice again strikes alittle nerve. Rest in paradise legend!
Nobody Gets more steals then smart by taking the ball from the defender. there are some guys that play the passing lane better but thats just because Smart is always guarding the best player who usually has the ball.
he’s someone you hate to go against but you’ll appreciate it later
Man it would be a crime if never won a defensive player of the year give this man some credit. 💯👌
Smart hands! I'm very unlucky not able to see this cuz am only wathing highlights from youtube.. Glad u uploaded this vid. Thanks alot!!
My dude Smart had defensive player of the year in the bag. Too bad the season got cut short. Hopefully they still give out awards for the season
Smart got snubbed he ain’t even get top 3 over Giannis or Gobert like cmon man!
What makes Marcus so good, he plays smart!
"aLl hE d0eS Is jUsT fLoP!"
Hes like a compact version of rodman
I really wish Him a speedy recovery. The man plays wit all his heart u gotta respect that 🙏
He should have at least one defensive player of the year before his career is up
He's too goooood
That steal into a no look with the left was amazing
Every championship team needs great role players. That is what Smart started out as. He is nowhere close to Brown or Tatum right now, but he just keeps getting better and better every year. Hes making better shot selections, reducing his turnovers, his passes are more accurate and despite being elite defensively, he actually is getting better.
you cannot hate this dude even as an opponent. respect!
Tonight was a reminder of the incalculable things Smart brought, along with the hustle stats; he played to the bone, and he wouldnt have let the C's get whooped on at home by a hospital squad from Miami. And these teams played harder, and with more joy, than this current group does - and I think that was Marcus, too.
As for me the best highlights are for Celtics33 and Celtics36..never tired watching those.
Bruh really the smartest in the nba
3:48 give me that
The play where he rips it off Zach Lavine and throws a one handed bounce pass to Hayward is peak Marcus Smart.
Get well soon Mr. Smart. I patterned my game from you.
Love these defensive lockdown vids 👌🏽
My favorite player.
Marcus Smart slander is not allowed in this house.
Clamps
Straight hustle player.
This dude should’ve been the dpoy incredible defensly this guy is underrated
His timing is nuts.
Wow! Marcus Smart is so smart!
He really a Grizzles player now wish him the best but we gon miss u Brody
Hate the Celtics with a passion... got a lot of respect for Smart though. Dude is such an ELITE defender. Might be the best pure lockdown guard we’ve seen since Tony Allen
if marcus can guard giannis... the league needs to watch out for this man
Fast Hands, Quick Feets and Great Defensive Awarneess
What else can be said..
Dude is Smart
YEAAAAAAAAAAAH BABY!
if you look closely, all celtics players moves in sync when it comes to defense. smart is just really outstanding.
If kemba leaves, Marcus smart should be our starting point guard tbh
Excellent top tier defender
Great great vid.please make more of these
Ahhhh refreshing during the shutdown. Great defense.
I cannot get out of the house cause Smart's lockdown
He sticks like a magnet
Evin Gualberto can you please do a video of Marcus Smart defending bigs? I love so much the hustle and the toughness that he brings in this soft league.
In this league with too many three pointers he still guards big men and isn’t scared to take a charge
He is my favorite defender to watch
The play at 2:32 is a great microcosm of what Smart provides for his team. Elite defense and great passing.
definition of a lockdown defender
His IQ Off the charts
i ain even know he was this good till i watched the whole video no lie
That boy Make shit Happen
He so smarttt
This is how you play D back in the 80's and 90's.
Can you do Bam Adebayo next?
I don't wanna say NEXT, but I've been working on a Bam comp since the season started. I wanted him to be my first video but then he really blew up (deservedly so) and I put that on the backburner a little.
Love this channel ❤️
He got them clampers
DPOY 💯
Dude your channel is lit. Love these vids you put out
zapdos6244 I appreciate that! Thank you!
@@EvinGualberto I like how you put clips of the same move together, it helps when I want to study a players move or footwork, the different angles are great for that
@@zapdos6244 that's the idea! When I was coming up, I'd watch the same clip of the same move over and over and over trying to figure out everything about. But the beauty more now is availability. A player's go-to move or a counter to that move can teach you a lot and now that problem for me sometimes is overemphasizing that move on a video that's supposed to be more comprehensive 😅
very good video.
Damn . This is good. 👍
Do more of marcus smart he's my idol
🔥 thumbnail. I think you should do a watermark on your vids moving forward instead of the ticker. People can crop out the bottom of the video.
Eric L agreed
True, but they could also just remove where the watermark would be. Just wanted to try it out.
Depoy winner 2022
He should be in the DPOY race easily
Kinda like Rodman w/o the rebounding, back in the Pistons days. Drawing charges, constantly pressuring and bothering the offense, can guard multiple positions.
DPOY
Anyone else hear him say “Gimme That!” on the blocks of Jarrett Allen and Justin Jackson?
So good his defense
Smart can guard 1 through 5. Defense is all heart!
He deserves more than 52M
Wish granted. He's now paid 77m
The kind of player that i want to be
I love these videos but I really want a Jamal Crawford video
God bless
As good as he is at defense he gets plenty of respect that he rightfully deserves but unfortunately he will never get the respect he deserves for how good a passer he is, I mean 8:53 is an insane play
0:38 He said whoa 7 times in 2 seconds. Whoa
You think you'll make another for dpoy year?
Hate his flopping ass but respect how he doesn’t care about getting posterized and always go up for a block
3:38 my man saved jayson Tatum 😂
He’s a better defender than Kawhi but I always here them talk about everybody else when the best defender is Mr. Smart
Teareal Davis 😂😂😂
How is he really? Cus hes closer to the ground? And hes smaller so it looks better with him doing what the Klaw does/has been doing for years... this is just now happening for smart n he has to be consistent to earn a title like that over a killer like kawhi
LottoGang Zaysav they would kill Kawhi in a series because he’s not affensively sound . They can shit down any player Boston known for that
@@lottogangzaysav411 Talk about casual. Smart been playing great defense since his rookie year.
What if him, averey bradly, pat bev, draymon and AD are on the same team...
You get no fucking offense LMAO
Nicholas Yuan nigga what...
Cosby Tf you mean nigga what? Its true dumbass
@@cosby7141 only AD can give u 20+ ppg on that team, pat bev and Draymond (now) barely get u 10 a game, you have nobody actually running point, and you have no reliable 3pt shooter. How do you generate offense?
If we had this guy at point guard on the lakers . At got a better SG we would go 72-10 easily
