    After listening to this, and after eating LCHF for over a year, I started eating way more protein and more greens and I seriously cut down on the fat intake, and I lost weight so fast and feel a lot better in generel. Thank you for a GREAT and informative podcast

    I am 70 years of age and have had a weight issue from the age of 9. I recently bumped up my protein to around 35% of calories, reduced fat to under 50g, and carbs under 80 net. I get 90% of carbs at my evening meal and practice 18/6 IF with weight train 4 times a week . My strength is coming back fast and the covid 20 is finally melting away. I can't recommend this way of eating enough.

      Great, I do the same but have some higher carb days, around my workouts and I definetly feel the massive energy coming from them. Not if adding more fat. I make sure my 50-60gr of fats comes from eggs, olives, some fatty beef. They regulate hormones at best but are not necessary as fuel, we already have our fat. Indeed despite the keto's fixation on insuline, our body uses fat internally for many low-energy pathways even in the presence of carbs. Also muscles use a lot of fats in the resting days after strength workouts, to do which you need carbs!

    I went on a trip and gained 6lbs. I’m a strict carnivore but just for experiment sake I tried adding in 1 to 2 big salads every day. Over 3 weeks I noticed my appetite greatly increased eating the leafy greens and salad low carb vegetable choices and my protein was very high. My weight didn’t budge. A week ago I switched back to carnivores steak and eggs and immediately started losing weight.

      Did you measure your waist? Weight is not a good indicator. Also salad is garbage, the worst the vegetable world can offer. So you can even have a massive water retention due to the "toxicity" of raw leaves. I added 10 lbs after introducing good carbs as tubers or low-glicemic fruits but my waist remained identical. Since I am quite tall and muscular, that weight was mostly glycogen and water in the muscles

      I am 65, keto-ish for 2+ years now, down 50lbs and maintaining. But I lost hair, and possibly some muscle, over these years. So, I have been trying to increase my protein lately, even though some will warn about too much growth factor kicking in. Especially at my age, the concern for cancer is looming. It is certainly a balancing act, and age should always be included in the discussion of protein.

      I’m 69 and started keto in mid-September 2020. I did great at first and lost 21 pounds by Thanksgiving. Then I hit a stall although I stuck strictly to the keto plan. Kept going up and down the same two tenths of a pound for three full months! At that point I was pretty annoyed, went out and bought pizza and ice cream and I forget what all else things I had been missing and had myself a wild couple of days. And I LOST two pounds!!! During those days I first heard about the P:E diet and felt that might be a better plan for me. I didn’t buy the book, but I watched a bunch of videos featuring Dr. Naiman and modified my macros a bit, lowering the fat, increasing the protein and still aiming for 20g of carbs, but I do go over a little once in a while. I’ve lost 10 more pounds now since I pulled myself out of my little binge and changed my macros.

    The main issue is so many people don’t cook for themselves. It is extremely difficult to eat enough protein if you’re eating out. Most restaurants think 6 oz or 8 oz of meat is plenty. Fast food is even worse, where you’re lucky if you get 3 or 4 ounces of meat in simple hamburger. If you’re targeting 40% of your calories from protein, that won’t be enough.

      And the other issue with eating out is that their all using cheap vegetable, seed and processed oils. But yea, I agree, you gotta start cooking for yourself / at home. I’m someone who had the means to eat out for the last 10’years and I did. Just in the last 6 weeks I started Keto and now more specifically PE and 100% of what I eat, I cook. It’s been a huge transformation and one for the better on all levels.

      The best food comes out of my kitchen. I like traveling and enjoy the break, but I'm always glad to be home again.

      @@bradje12 it’s fine. I didn’t follow it for more than a month. Depends on what your goals are as far as saying whether it’s good or bad. I was looking to lose weight. I did, but not through PE. Ultimately, if weight loss is your goal, you can’t ignore calories. I spent a year consuming vast amounts of info around Keto, PE, carnivore, etc…all this stuff and one thing was inescapable for weight loss - calories. And I got the data for myself to prove it as I tracked my calories and weight meticulously for over 6 months. And the other thing that I found was important was protein for satiety. So PE is good for that as it focuses on protein. I give PE more credit for being a long term plan than Keto.

    Thank you Doc! I had tremendous body comp changes with 2 years Carnivore, yet the scale didn't move. I'll take it as a success, but I was still about 40lbs excess fat while eating traditional higher fat, moderate protein. I'm 8 weeks into your protocol, having stayed Carnivore and down 13 lbs so far! I'm so thankful for you and I'm happy to continue working towards my goals!!

      What does a typical day look like for you? Do you incorporate IF? I’ve been strict carnivore and feel amazing but I’m not losing much needed fat so I’m very intrigued by your success. Thanks ♥️

    When I started targeting protein to around 30% of my calories I didn't have to think that much about carbs or fat (just generally healthier sources for them) and my weight has stabilized like never before. Some days are higher fat, some days higher carb. I can listen to what I want and it becomes much more intuitive. I do think protein is the answer, not the carb vs fat obsession

    even if you could ingest 30% protein on plant foods it doesn't mean your body can absorb that protein, or that the estrogenic compounds from it can be harmful to your body.

      Yes, and although they did touch on the completeness of the amino acid balance, I would have liked to hear more on it, especially being a a treatise that gives protein the highest importance.

      Also plant proteins means eating ALOT. To me some animal proteins within a high carb meal is the most satiating and muscle-sparing diet that leads to eat much less. I know many keto-enthousiasts would disagree but I suspect people tend to extremes too much and misses the magic of the middleground 😉

      @@Marco-jx9rr extreme diet are not for everyone buts its the only solution for many. i don't like the popular keto diet and it didn't work for me long term for several reasons. what has worked for me is moderate fat high protein carnivore diet. i still eat fruit, drink on weekends, white rice from time to time. im not religious about a diet but i do try to be as strict as possible. i also use two types of fasting 18-6 and for the last 8 weeks faster for 40+ hours twice a week. that stubborn last few lbs are coming off. see ive been trying to lose those last 15lbs for years nothing would do it till now. i also found that on this diet things i sued to like eating ive lost the desire to eat and taste for. i'm not enticed by potatoes, salads, vegetables, breads, pastries, even some meats no longer turn me on like chicken, pork, shrimp. i ca literally eat meat every day and never be bored. course i eat different cuts and cook then different ways, but always med to rare.

      and plant protein has poor amino acid profiles, especially for muscle protein synthesis from leucine

      the muscle meat you are eating from a cow was grown by plants .
      how about Elephants, Giraffs , water buffalo , bison ......all huge muscular Animals eating only plants...aka grass fed

    ok, here is what has worked for me as I've gleaned infor from many of these podcasts.
    Increase protein
    Increase quality of protein
    Enjoy a steak
    Don't worry about amount of fat, but the quality of fat
    Decrease carbs, but and zero out sugar and super refined carbs
    Don't eat for at least 14 hours
    Don't snack and if I do,,,it's a very good snack. If not hungry or an egg or a piece of salmon...skip the snack.
    Fast for 36 hours occasionally
    Drink bone broth when feeling iffy.
    Enjoy sauerkraut
    Walk after a meal. or do something for a few minutes.
    That's it.

    By a lot of what he talks about doing especially in respect to carbs you can tell he has never been insulin resistant, morbidly obese or had food addiction. I agree with some of what he talks about, (the need for increase in protein), however, a great deal of his attitude about carbs (eating potatoes, cycling carbs, eating carbs in the eve, not worrying if you have a CGM spike from eating a high carb food) I disagree with. I have never seen him provide any of the research he is getting his info from which leaves me thinking a lot of what he talk about is his expressing his opinion as if it is fact.

      I actually agree with him, somewhat, in that once you have reached your goals, cycling a bit of carbs can be useful or even more healthy, but I very much agree with you that he (nor I) has not presented evidence for that opinion.

      The cynic in me says " there's money to be made in writing books on diets but LCHF, KETO, LFHC, etc are all well covered but there's very little written on HP diets for the average person.... Bingo, that's where I'm going to make some money"

    Yes, my glucose skyrocket when I try to increase a bit of carbs , even including berries, tomatoes, squash, and other lower carb foods.

      Mr domino I can only do green salad mix or broccoli kale leafy greens with meat. When I went to mainly protein my hunger went away.

      @@thedcbroker7264 I’ve stopped measuring BG but I had 10 grams of carbs in a meal(2 cheap supermarket burgers)a few weeks ago and I immediately fell asleep, which always happened to me before I went Keto.

      @@randomroses1494 I used to crash after carb meals too. I tried energy drinks, coffee, etc, but I was the walking dead. Mentioned it to my doctor, he said try some coffee late in the day or I could have sleep apnea. He could have saved me a lot of pain and suffering if he told me about keto and carnivore. Funny thing is his office still calls to see how I’m feeling. These were the same people who suggested I switch to a vegan diet and eat 5 times a day. He put me on blood pressure meds......all I needed to do was eat once a day, and eat mainly meat. Lost weight, blood pressure went down, no need for meds, no more brain fog or crashes. It’s cheap!! I wonder how many other people’s lives he’s destroyed.

      Are you adding these carbs on top of a high fat diet? That is to be expected. Also after long enough on a fat-centric diet your muscles become insuline-resistant, the few carbs in your body go only to those cells that can't live without such as blood cells, eyes, etc. So you add carbs but your body does not use them. Carb's pathways were downregulated. It takes time to regain affinity with glucose and requires to reduce dietary fats for some months at least

    I like Dr. Naiman's idea that the most important thing is sustainability and that we need to work towards eating and exercising now the way we are going to eat and exercise forever. Change needs to be made in small positive changes.

    A little know obstetrician Dr Bradley observed that pregnant who consume low protein were more likely to develop preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. In addition to developing a birthing method he developed a protein rich diet for pregnant women.

    Cyclical carbs (or carbs usage in general) are for folks that do not (or have not ever) have metabolism issues... love thin athletic folks discussing how old fat guys should get in shape. I want someone who has been fat and out of shape for 50 years and then recovered...let’s see them tell me how “easy” it is to get their metabolism back “good enough” to add carbs to their diet!

    I gained 20 lbs during the pandemic and am struggling bad to lose it. I’m so frustrated and sick of dieting. Low carb we all understand, but from there knowing what to eat , especially for me 50 yo hashimoto hypo menopause is brutal. It’s effecting my mental health now too and some days I want to give up, but my family all dies young from cardiac issues, so I can’t. Thank you for your video.

    I think fasting is key to weight loss in low carb or low fat diets along with increased protein.

      It can work if you don't restrict carbs, so a night carb meal f.i. But if already restricting carbs, fasting can become stressfull and put you at low-energy. I talk after experience 😉

      Only in the sense that it reduces the likelihood that you over eat. If you still consume more food than you need, you'll get fat.

    Maria Emmerich recommends for fat loss to do keto 4 days a week and for the other 3 days do low fat AND low carb AND low calorie. That way you preserve muscle, burn your own body fat, but you avoid turning down your metabolism.

    Been watching lots of Ted’s interviews and am very impressed. But, I’m also very impressed with Dr. William Li’s book, Eat To Beat Disease. I’m trying to stay in cancer remission, and deal with aging. Keto and IF helped me drop weight and improve my labs, but after a year, I don’t feel as well as I did 6 months into it. So, now I’m looking at adding back more higher carb nutrient dense fruits, veg and legumes. But, I’m also adding more lean protein, because of Ted’s research.

    I just came across this channel and thank God I did! The interviewer was asking so many of the questions I wish I could ask these fitness UA-camrs! Great information!
    I have been theorizing the solution of low carb and low fat but haven’t heard anyone on UA-cam or anywhere discuss this! It’s always just been either or (high fat low carb or low fat high carb)… but it only makes sense to do both when trying to burn body fat… it’s just that I’ve never heard anyone explicitly state this before!!! THESE WERE THE ANSWERS IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR! WATCHING HOURS AND HOURS OF INFORMATION AND FINALLY FOUND THE ANSWER!!!! THANK YOU!!! KEEP DOING THIS PLEASE! I’m a new subscriber now!

    Being a recent adopter of keto & intermittent fasting, I have been listening to an arrays of concepts and approaches from holistic physicians, nutritionists and ‘bio hackers’. Having spent one month doing a ‘carnivore’ diet, I was eager to get back to leafy greens and broader basic real food. This is the 2nd talk emphasizing protein recently. The protein-satiety-energy ‘equation’ is certainly thought-provoking, along w the points about metabolic flexibility, etc.

    A potato has about 80-90% carbs in dry weight or 15-20% in normal cooked form.
    So if I add water to flour it's about the same and ground beef is low protein with only 20% protein and low fat with only 15% fat ;)
    Besides the need to get the quality of your fats in order and your carbs down, he is right and protein needs to be higher in quantity and quality, for most people.
    Don't forget, that carbs are non essential but fats need to be present in good quality and quantity.
    "Lucky" for us, in nature, the good protein comes bundled with the good fats, it's like we're adapted to this!

    I know this is an old video but I have to comment. I lost weight on keto but it didn’t do any good for my health issues. As soon as I went carnivore my asthma cleared up my lower G.I. issues cleared up and my hip arthritis got so much better. I tried to add vegetables one time this last summer of 2022 and I couldn’t walk that night my hip hurts so bad. I just feel better on a protein diet

    I did low carb and could not control my appetite! I was not raising the level of protein and it was very low. I've stayed focusing on protein now for the first time in my life and the weight is dropping off. It's not easy, because I'm vegetarian but it is amazing. This was the key all along and I had tried everything BUT protein.

    I just had a 7 ounce fillet mignon and double order of broccoli at Bonefish. I was so proud of myself and it was delicious. Been on low carb, low fat for 5 weeks and lost 10 lbs.

    Really great conversation to hear. Type 1 diabetic husband and I have been eating 100% carnivore diet for almost 2 years. Feeling great! Quite sustainable. I suppose we are likely eating quite a lot of fat that occurs naturally in the meat as well as the cream in the coffee but zero added carbs (while there may be some small amount of carb in the meat).

    Outstanding interview! I have been following the P.E. Diet for 1 week and am astounded at the hunger control and loss of weight. I have tried almost every diet out there and have failed miserabley because of lack of protein. This is the most easiest and satieting diet ever. Its pretty much effortless. I dont feel hungry what so ever. This way of eating is absolutey sustainable.

    I am doing Carnivore, and eat about 2000 calories.. eggs, sausage, butter, chuck roast, and water ... and I get 75% fat.. so high fat, but I am at 24-25% protein.. I think low carb may not be HIGH protein, but it's usually 20%. As long as you eat some meat, you will probably get plenty of protein.
    We label different diets, but I find mine would be very low carb

    Great questions as always Dr Bret Love your interview style. I noticed how Ted did not answer what is more satiating whey protein powder or ribeye steak. I would argue the ribeye steak is more satiating and has a lower insulin spike than the whey protein powder

      The main reason steak, or any whole food version of protein is more satiating is, it takes longer for whole food protein to digest, and whey protein is the fastest of all proteins to be sucked into muscle, that is why it is so good for a a post exercise food.

    I’ve been following dietdoctor for quite a while now and usually love your content especially as it’s been so useful for me as a reversed T2 diabetic. But this video was rather confusing. I’ve obviously heard Ted Naiman speak before but I would have loved for dietdoctor to provide much more information particularly around Ted’s statements incl eating 100g of carbs... I hope future videos are much clearer as to what exactly you’re advising is the best macro make up for people with metabolic issues.

      he's basically saying that if you never have carbs, and restrict them either through eating or fasting or deplete them via high intensity exercise/weight training, you have all this room in your muscle and liver glycogen so there really are no drawbacks to eating that many carbs in a sitting. 100g of carbs would be bad for somebody who is super overfat to begin with, and who never depletes their glycogen stores from exercise and their eating patterns. and the leaner you get, the more metabolically flexible you become.

      @@SkyZer0 Well said. Metabolic flexibility is the name of the game. Probably 80% of Americans are sugar (carbohydrate) burners incapable of burning fat because they keep their glucose levels elevated almost all the time, so never burn fat...which is why they are, well, fat. If you can get your glucose levels down long enough to start burning fat -through time restricted eating and lowering what Naiman calls energy intake (both fats and carbohydrates as well as getting protein up to 35 - 40% of calories) then you're good to go. It can take several days to a couple of weeks to transition into becoming a fat burner who produces ketones regularly, though. Stephen Finney MD, talks a lot about making this transition...salt is important.

      @@swanee9414 not high glucose levels, but high glycogen stores that are always filled and at maximum capacity. not talking about keto here. you can be in a ketogenic state and be running off fat for energy, but you're never going to be burning your own fat stores if you're consuming too much dietary fat as well. 80% of americans are consuming too many calories by eating foods comprised of carbs+fat combined.

    I am not for cyclical keto /or carb cycling (because I feel much better in ketosis than in glucosis!😊) but much better for me from my experience is cyclical fat/protein ratio with low carb income. It depends on daily activities and the need to lose the fat or to gain the muscles.😉

    I never got to ideal body fat percentage on a Vegan diet too many " healthy carbs" like oatmeal; only to learn that I had the same problem with Keto - too many "healthy" fats. So boy does this info make sense!!!

    Interesting to hear but vague on protein intake for weight loss. When my daughter was in Kaiser weight loss program, they took measurements and each person had their minimum grams of protein to eat per day. After 2 weeks she didn't feel hungry and had a hard time-consuming daily requirement.

    Proteins are expensive for sure, I now buy my meat from a wholesaler by 10-20kg box and put them in the chest freezer. I also eat liver & heart which cost very little (heart is quite nice sous vide 10h@54*C+quick blow torch). Grilling is now a hobby, I enjoy my proteins.I bought PE Diet last year, which is absolutely wonderful.

      Wanting to be more defined is ok. But too low body fat % is not good long term. Keep that in mind as more and more fitness coaches come to this realization. Too low of a body fat is also detrimental especially to women's health.

    now THIS makes sense! I HAVE prolific fat stores of my own... I'm almost 2 months in keto and don't like fatty meat, though I do enjoy butter and cheese and cream I've only lost about 8-10 lbs (the first 5 most likely water) so high fat is NOT ideal for me, High protein makes more sense, let me get satisfied by some great protein cause seriously the qty of calories I'm eating is very low compared to what I have always eaten before and yet the weight is not "falling off" like it should be... finally there's an argument for upping protein and just letting my body use my own fuel stores instead of "teaching" it how to burn fat by taking in gross (literally) amounts of exogenous fat.

    For me, anytime I lower my fat and up my protein I find myself actually having more cravings. When I have higher fat intake and moderate protein I am almost never hungry and my sugar Cravings are gone period protein seems to make me crash and be hungry again.

      You may find it helpful to make the changes more gradually rather than trying to double protein and halve the fat. It may be easier to sustain.

    Please tell me where ground beef is 99 cents per pound. Not here in Texas. Close to $4.00 per pound is more like it. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen it on sale, except the occasional package that’s about to reach its sell by date and gets marked down by 25%. Leaving it still close to $3.00.

    Raw one cup servings - Net carbs:
    Spinach .4. Lettuce 1.4. Celery 2. Portabella 2.5. Cabbage 3. Cucumbers 3.2. Cauliflower.3.2. Broccoli 3.6. Tomatoes 4. Asparagus 4.

    Neither one of those men has been morbidly obese I would bet. A higher fat food plan helps people get “satiated” for the first years of LCHF. The problem is “compulsive” eating for regulating emotions . But obviously most can’t eat 5000 cals a day and lose weight. Which I have seen some KETO people try.

    I stumbled across the Diet Doctor podcast recently and find it interesting, especially everything Dr. Naiman is saying. I have plateau on OMAD/Ketogenic after 6 months with 10lbs to go and will give this technique a try. However, been reading the Plant Paradox book and research says people in the Blue zone live much longer and are centurions - they eat mostly plant proteins and higher fat. So I will need to research if this high meat protein strategy is healthy long term for the heart, arteries and body.

    I tried to find some research saying blood sugar spikes are ok but couldn't. Does anyone have a link to research showing blood sugar spikes are ok? Also, I am able to keep my blood sugars below 100 on a high fat, low carb diet and fasting, except after a meal where I try to never see my sugars spike above 130. The fat might be keeping glucose in my blood stream, but at a level below prediabetes and certainly lower than when I eat carbs. Also with high intensity exercise there is this: "Although blood sugars may be higher initially, studies have shown that intense exercise increases insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake by the body’s cells." I don't think that spiking your blood sugars by eating carbs has the same effect, but if there is research showing it I am certainly open to it. I also tried to find research on the difference in fat cell vs muscle cell insulin sensitivity timing but am coming up with a blank. Does anyone have links for this?

    I know this is an older post, but I am really struggling. I did High fat keto and lost about 60 pounds in 6 months and then just like Ted Naimen says, I stalled. I purchased the beautiful coffee table book and was fascinated by the idea of upping my protein. I have 20-30 pounds to go. Dr Fung says to keep protein low ( around 41 gr for my weight 170lbs.) He says you need to stay this low if you want to catabolize the protein in loose skin while fasting. Nobody wants loose skin. I think this is too low, but I am going around in circles. Perhaps I have answered my own questions and will aim for a middle ground and see what happens

      At the end of the day the amount of calories you ingest matter. You need a calorie deficit to continue to lose weight. So, replacing some of the fats with proteins on keto absolutely makes sense but you also decrease the calories and that's what makes you lose it. Fat is very calorie dense. Also when your body weight reduces so do your calorie needs to sustain or lose additional weight. Unfortunately there's no escaping that. 😂

    I have to disagree, the key of satiety is not in eating the macro that gives you more satiety per calorie. It’s on getting the body used to burn fat as energy, so the body uses its own fat and you are never really hungry

      Let me disagree with your disagreement 😆...in a constructive manner. Suppressing hunger is not a good thing and is not synonymous with satiety. Indeed a fat metabolism brings to low energy and reduced metabolism. Having hunger is not a bad thing, having disregulated ghrelin due to eating refined junk is. Whole carbs + animal proteins and low but adeguate fats containing fat-soluble vitamins is the most satiating food that naturally leads to eat less ON THE LONG and, furthermore, having high energy makes you more active 😉

      I agree with you Oscar. Well pretty much. I mean I think it's important to feel satiated in the first place to get the ball rolling, so a high protein intake takes care of that for me. However if you're barely consuming carbs then where is your body going to get the energy to process protein? From fat! So by consuming a lot of protein with no/barely any carbs then you'll activate burning fat for fuel in order to process that protein. Then of course I totally agree with you that you'll feel less and less hungry as your body can feel satiated because now it is used to burning it's own fat (of course, that is if you have enough fat reserves).
      From personal experience what I have found is that I need way more protein at first in order to get the calories I need, ie: before fat burning has been activated. I eat low fat protein because if I were eating protein along with high fat then my body just uses the fat that I consume to create fuel to process protein. Of course there's nothing wrong with that (well there kinda is if you read my final note at the end) as you'll still be getting your body used to/using fat for fuel, however you'll also not be burning the fat on your body as there'll be no need to. By all means start this way if you want, and then go to lean protein. However to get results quicker it is better to have a very high protein and low carb, low fat ratio at first. Why? ....
      You'll feel very satiated from the high protein intake.
      Because you're eating a load of protein you will require a lot of energy to process it, thus you will activate fat burning much quicker.
      As you're not/barely not consuming carbs and fat then your body will continue to get the fuel from the fat on your body.
      Once you've activated burning your own fat for fuel then you'll feel less hungry and therefore you can reduce your protein intake.
      Metabolism won't decline because you're not starving, your body is getting all it's needs from the fat on your body even if you're only eating 500 calories a day from lean protein.
      For example, some days I only eat a tin of tuna and a couple of eggs. Now and then I'll fast if I want to. I feel fine because my body is burning fat for fuel.
      Final note: Protein may raise insulin more than fat. People say that insulin makes you store fat and so stops you from burning it for fuel. Sure, but what people don't say is that it makes you store fat that you consume. Insulin doesn't make you store fat that is already stored, because obviously it is already stored! Once the fat on your body has been turned into fuel then it is no longer in the form where insulin will store it, ie: Insulin doesn't store 'fuel', it stores 'fat' which can then later be used for fuel. So when the fat on your body has been turned into fuel in your body, then insulin won't do a thing to it. The fuel from your fat will simply be used for fuel. This is a most important note.

    Just as of recently I find it mind boggling of how difficult people/doctors make eating out to be. We as humans know what should be eaten to be healthy. Plain and simple we don't want to. We want to fit the "good stuff" in our meals. That's the stuff slowly killing us.
