1942 Delta Drill Press Restoration (Part 1)

- I found a vintage drill press by the side of the road with a "FREE" sign on it, so naturally it followed me home. Sometimes I feel like the crazy cat lady of old tools.... but anyway, I figured I should give this machine some love. It's a 14" Delta Drill press, also commonly called the DP-220 for the number on the head casting. This one is from 1942.

I purchased a floor model DP-220 last year for $75 off Craigslist. Mine looks like it's from 1941 or so. I showed a photo of it to a friend who said he saw one a week earlier in the metal bin at the dump. Damn.

I restored the same drill in the UK labelled as " Tauco" and a plate on it saying it was supplied as lend-lease 1942.

This post reminds me of the time someone gave me a General floor drill press that had been in a fire. All the castings were fine and the spindle assembly was salvageable but the column was very bent. Looking around I discovered a pipe almost the right DIA. and brought it to size by mounting it on my wood lathe and using files and a belt sander. The only things I had to buy were new bearings and a quill return spring. Still functional 40 yr's later.
While I am looking forward to you doing this drill press. I am looking more forward to the milling machine rehab.

Great job so far. I think I might have used a little Never Seize or similar compound where the base attaches to the column, given the trouble you had getting them apart, but oil will probably be just fine. Looking forward tot he next installment.

It’s the little things you do like making the bolt heads match which just sets it off.
Nice find, nice rebuild, I’d be going with a 3 ph motor and 1 to 3 VFD. No more belt moves, great speed changes.
The original spindle pulley bearing was a special New Departure deep grove type that resisted the overturning force from the belt tension. Your substitution with an ordinary bearing will allow more deviation from vertical alignment, which causes the upper portion of the die cast drive sleeve within the pulley to rub against the spindle. When Delta ran out of the original ND bearings, they made the bearing substitution that you did, but also shortened the drive sleeve by removing the top portion to "solve" the rubbing problem. Hope that you saved the original bearing, as I my experience they can been salvaged if not too worn. The loss of the top shield can be compensated for, and presents the opportunity to repack the grease.
Don't know why this stuff is just thrown away or how you manage to get it before the scrappers spot it. Lol
I appreciate the VIP seats, FRONT ROW!!!! But seriously, you didn't have to send the Limo. Me in my Hawaiian (not easy to spell) shirt and dungarees. But i felt I should look the part of a VIP. Great show, But I got some Evapo-Rust on my good shirt. Imagine it removes rust but stains cotton, who would have thought it. Enjoyed the show despite the incident.

A thought on rebuilding machinery... especially those with smaller bearings. Replace `em. It's where about 50% of your runout occurs, and there is simply no telling what abuse it has seen in 80 years. It's a toss up in milling machines, and a prayer for main spindle bearings in a lathe.

Maybe you could fill the pipe of the main body with concrete for extra stability and vibration dampening

Hi did you remove the quill depth needle base that is pressed into the left side of the body (next to the return spring)? I’m guessing it’s press fit in but do want to pry too hard. I also noticed it has a little spring inside of it as well to apply tension on the depth needle.
I honestly don’t remember, sorry. And I’m suspicious that my quill needle isn’t original, so it could be completely different from what it should be.
What size is your column? I have a few spare tables and columns laying around.if you want a table or a full size column
What's the tool called at 4:44 that you used to remove the drill chuck from the Arbor?
They’re called (simply) “drill chuck removal wedges.” They come in various sizes for various sized chucks/arbors
what is that tool that looks like hammering needls? What does it do?
It’s a needle scaler, for removing rust, loose paint, dirt, etc.
"Make sure there are no burrs, and it should slide right off the column". Then proceed to destroy the lower lips of the column. Is this the life of anyone that has to deal with old hunks of metal, or what.
