It's always enlightening to hear the music that someone you value is into. And your role as an educator brings that to a wider audience. Much respect to you both.
What I like is that each bass line is played by three different bass instruments, electric, acoustic, and synth. All that's missing is a line from some kind of baritone horn
Good stuff. After hearing those choices, I can think of moments in Flea's playing that reveal these influences.( at least the P-funk and JPJ.) Lately there's been a lot of YT videos with the isolated drum+bass tracks from Led Zeppelin recordings. Jones and Bonham were so locked in! Helped me to better appreciate what may have been the greatest rhythm section in rock. THAT might be a good video topic - classic drum/bass pairings.
Cecil McBee! I attended the (last) Lake Placid Jazz Seminar in 2002. Charlie Haden had to cancel and was replaced by Cecil McBee. At first I was disappointed, but not for long. He was a font of information and a joy to be around. Good to hear he's still playing!
ok gotta push back a bit on the Flash Light segment. Yes, two chords, but it’s the way Bernie navigates the line that is unforgettable. IDK how many improvisations he puts in there. In the back have of the song I don’t think he repeats a single phrase. Just marking each one his variations by ear is pure pleasure
Yeah! Journey in satchidananda and Cecil McBee’s basslines are probably my all time favourite, both as album and bass playing 👌 And of course Alice ❤There is something so magical about that album, and how central the bassriffs are. His small subtle variations. And his bowing, truly great. Listened to it a million times.
There's a Cecil McBee line on one of my old records that's to die for - & I can't remember the name of it but he's brilliant!! Love Flea though I've no desire to play like him - but, as you say, listen to what came before! 👍😊
I first heard that Alice Coltrane album a couple of years ago and it was a revelation. Such a great choice (so are the others, though). Something about that bassline reminds me a little of a song called Durian by Cinematic Orchestra. Not so much the melody, but maybe the rhythm? I don't really have any music training- just an enthusiastic listener who is especially fascinated with the bass.
I definitely see that Led Zep song's influences on Flea's bass playing. The way the bass stays relevant in an acoustic, non-band song. Usually you can scrap the idea of playing bass out altogether (in an acoustic song) but there's a way to be present, be relevant and contribute to the melody without doing too much. Flea definitely does that in RHCP songs with quiet verses.
after listening to Journey In Satchidananda for many years I discovered something while listening on headphones. It is after the first sax melody is played- listen close- Alice hums an E to a C#/Bb- so beautiful!
Flashlight was a rejected Bootsy's Rubber Band song and was repurposed for Parliament. That's what can happen if a large pool of musicians record under a variety of band names.
Well played indeed. Flea knows his stuff! Thank you for this very insightful commentary and excellent bass work. Learning and studying your music hero’s heroes IS what it’s all about as a musician. I was just playing and seriously loving Bootsy’s ‘World Wide Funk’ album/CD in my car last week and wondering when next you’d be talking about Bootsy. And then I was wondering, who were Bootsy’s influences?
i just have to tell you, this is easily the best youtube channel i know of. and i have a couple-dozen other interests. thank you for your passion and excitement popping into my brain-thing, days later, for no easy reason. oh i'm washing dishes listening to "news" but bernie worrell did the flash light line on an organ... some day, hopefully soon, i will force a non-musician to fall in love with you. we can do that!... hearts.
I'm an oldie and was 13 years old when LZII came out. Always thought that 'Ramble On' was the best track on the album. The bass guitar line is sublime and makes this song. John Paul, perhaps a tad underrated? I love to play this bassline. Loving the channel Paul . . . thank you
What struck me while watching this (as someone who loves to create mashup arrangements), is that both "Flashlight" and "Journey in Satchidananda" alternate between C and F chords. I think they're ripe for a mashup!
Man, so many great basslines out there to choose only 3. I'll try it. The following ones ain't gonna be my definitive top 3, but the best ones I can think about right now. Jazz: Keep Your Soul Together by Freddie Hubbard. Funk: Chameleon by Herbie Hancock. Rock: Another One Bites The Dust by Queen. (Why not 😅)
I prefer to slife the Ramble On verses rather than hammer on, which provides more contrast with the choruses, but I never actually realized this wasn't the way JPJ did it
Maaan i haven't seen this list, but after this it makes a lot of sense.... if you listen closely you can pick the melodic inspired similarities between the verses from Ramble On and the RHCP smash hit, Californication, that pretty, nimble, high register-y line.
There's a good chance, I'd have picked Flashlight too. And, honestly, kudos to Flea for checking his ego and not being afraid to include a synth bass line. I feel like a lot of bassist have this weird, I don't know, elitist way of looking down on synth bass.
Great stuff as always. Was just listening to Flea’s bass solo on Naked in the Rain from the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik and wondered whether you’d done a video on Flea. So now I’m wondering what is your favorite of his bass lines?
Now I know why this old granny loves Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea is inspired by the music of my era, the 70s. Californication is one of my favourite albums.
I expected more funk! It only kinda shows how rounded Flea is musically. Pretty crazy as well that after listening to the Rick Rubin Podcasts with RHCP I looked up all the bands and songs they got their inspiration from. Suddenly I could hear the influences from those bands in the RHCP songs.
Cecil Mcbee , I was amused but not really surprised when I saw a mens clothing store in Japan called Cecil Mcbee ha ha . True and they love jazz in japan. Maybe it was inspired in a way by the slick mens clothing shop in London called Cecil Gee ? They had clothes we could only dream about ….. unless you were a shoplifter ha ha . I was not so made do with regular stuff and jumpers knitted for me by my grandmother. In 1981 Pier Cardin was another hot brand . The bassist Cecil Mcbee I saw play live at Ronnie Scott’s a few times and yeah top quality playing another time I saw him playing duo with Joanne Brackeem in Zanzibar a New York restaurant. Cool , cool . Cecil is one of the greatest .

Facts and some extra infos, is what makes this channel a must, for all bassists, musicans and lovers of music.
Thanks paul, for another great video.

Great video as always! Flea has great taste!
i learn so much from your channel please don't stop making these videos :)
The algorithm brought me to your channel and as a bass player as well, I appreciate your take on the topic. Keep it up :)
You went to the upright and I subbed. Trying to keep my music students on the edge by investigating the "why" and this just hits. Thank you.

You are that good. Keep 'em comin'.
Really great ! the discussion the analysis, the inspiration, thankyou PDbass !
Complètement d'accord avec ramble on
🤗😊 I love Flea! His bass playing is quite funky and jazzy. He played the bassline for Young MC Bust A Move too!
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Great video, simple explanation and inspiring closing. Tks
I am loving all of this and i am learning the why!! Thank You Paul!!
There's a Cecil McBee line on one of my old records that's to die for - & I can't remember the name of it but he's brilliant!!
Love Flea though I've no desire to play like him - but, as you say, listen to what came before! 👍😊
3 favorite bass lines, 1 favorite youtube bass channel!
I first heard that Alice Coltrane album a couple of years ago and it was a revelation. Such a great choice (so are the others, though). Not surprising. Flea always talks about his musical influences. You hear his influences in his bass lines. His brilliant. 👍
Thanks for another great video Paul - love your insights and deep info you bring to them.
Always remember him praising Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s playing on the Showstopper album too.
Fleas most underrated bass line is the chorus of "Under the bridge". Nobody talks about that one. Great videos!!
*_Great video. Love the historical back stories. 👍_*
Another great lesson professor
Pleasantly surprising list!

Who would have thunk Flea and Alice Coltrane ? Great video short and to the point.
after listening to Journey In Satchidananda for many years I discovered something while listening on headphones. It is after the first sax melody is played- listen close- Alice hums an E to a C#/Bb- so beautiful!

How about George Porter of the meters ? Thanks for all your efforts. Excellent channel!!!
Great!

Talking about Flea - mention Fishbone
I prefer to slife the Ramble On verses rather than hammer on, which provides more contrast with the choruses, but I never actually realized this wasn't the way JPJ did it
I'm surprised he didn't have any Jamerson in there. Flea's been a huge proponent of What's Going On.
the bass part on Ramble On is a tribute to Jamerson, so he’s in there 😊
Flashlight IS THE reason I am learning Bass...
Awesome! Please do a video for "Tears" by the Force MD's. I think the bass line deserves some attention.
What a great video!

A night with Blue Note came out in 1985 ? There is a fantastic bass solo on there by Cecil . The track with Bennie Wallace ? Broadside?
Now I know why this old granny loves Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea is inspired by the music of my era, the 70s. Californication is one of my favourite albums.
In ramble on i always heard slurs as opposed to hammer ons but I'll have to listen to it again either way ;)
so good❤

A great bass player picking great bass lines.
He liked the first one enough to lift it for the chorus of The Power of Equality...

You got some serious jazz-bass-face going with the Alice C lines...
Man, love u
Flea is a Pfunk fan; Great
RHCP's Power of Equality sounds like it is heavily influenced by Flashlight
In the words of Bernie, it's just a scale!
I agree with Flea
Love me some KingBritt
i guess Larry Graham on If You Want Me to Stay would be to obvious :)
Heeeello! :)
James Blood Ulmer
😊😊
LeVar Burton of bass, compliments only.
🤣🤣🤣
Mizell Broz would be 👌
NR Time (by MizellStory) 👍 among dozens
