Power Carving A Fish - Firewood Trout
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- In this video I create a stylized brook trout carving from a piece of firewood and a river rock. It is finished using dyes, acrylic paint and polyurethane. I did most of the carving with a Dremel 3000 but can't help grabbing a knife and chisel. I happened to have an extra can of brush on polyurethane to paint the mask for the dye but it could have been done by working from a puddle sprayed from the can.
Thank you to all that helped me reach 1k subs! I would appreciate feedback, letting me know your likes and dislikes, so I can continue to improve my content.

Beautiful piece, great video, loved the music. It all came together. ❤❤👏👏👏👏 I do power carving and custom one of a kind furniture pieces. I guess UA-cam figured I'd be interested in your work. They were right, well done!

Holy moly! This is suddenly a very different production Mr. Woodworks! Wow. Great piece of art you made and extremely well done video on the process. I really like this. Framing at all times was really well thought out and executed. And cuts to the music! I've always dreamed of that!
Bus Huxley thank you! I really appreciate all your help and feedback. Cuts to the music are fun to do.
Splendid! Bravo.
Thank you!
I enjoy carving... power and Flat plane by knife... Always lookin for inspiration...
J. Fauver I still feel more comfortable with a knife. I had a blacksmith friend give me a carving knife he made. I plan on doing a video using just that on a project.
Beautiful work!
Thank you!
I’ve always been interested in carvings I have a collection of ducks and other birds have always wanted to try it myself I learned of your channel through Bus Huxley
William O'Connor you should definitely try it!! It is a lot of fun. The biggest trick is to just get used to the way the wood reacts and first and not worry so much about the results.
Found your channel while searching for bird carving. Fantastic videos. Thank you for sharing your amazing work.
Darlene Tarlton thank you! and thank you for watching!
Great work again. Thanks.
Ryan Moorfell thank you for watching!
I really love this carving! Congrats!
Thank you!
You Sir, are a master craftsman!
Further, your anatomical knowledge of trout is beyond compare.
anatomy. Erwin Hartslief.
Beautiful work. found your channel by doing a search of fish carving.
Thank you! Are you doing some carving?
@@MCBWoodworks Trying to get started.
@@Busabuck100 enjoy! It’s a lot of fun.
Really cool!
Jolien Brebels thank you!!
Really like how the carving wraps around the river rock, nice work! GH4 is a great camera by the way.
timothy holt thank you! That was my main focus with this piece. I am super happy with it. Hoping to keep learning how to run it.
Awesome work brotha!!
Ian M Burke thanks bro!!
Genial mec tu es un bon 👍
I searched UA-cam for "power carving a fish" is how I found you. I would sure like to know what product you used to dip the fish in in that bowl and how did you get it only on certain parts of the fish
It is a Trans Tint dye. The previous scene I am painting polyurethane on the section I don’t want dyed. It isn’t a perfect process but with a little sanding it works pretty well. I linked the dye in the description.
I enjoyed your video. I'm interested in powercarving a black crappie,(whole fish), and I believe I can use your technique, in carving the basic fish. I understand I'll have to carve the fins, and attach them, and paint it, but the initial part of carving it, I think I can do. I would appreciate your advice, while I am working through this process.
Thanks,
Tommy Schutz
Tommy Schutz thank you. I think it works best to carve the tail and dorsal fin as part of the whole fish then attach the other fins. If it is being painted then you can use some putty at the attachment thank points to make a nice clean transition. Let me know if you have any questions along the way and good luck!
I really like this. Gonna try and make it. I found you on makers playground. Keep up the good work!
Dale Stevens thank you and thank you for watching. Tag me in a comment if you post it. I’d love to see it.
Congrats on 1K man! Always look forward to your stuff!
Mavic in Maine thank you! I appreciate your support!

I actually don't know how I found you. Been watching you almost from the beginning. Fascinating to watch you work. Oddly enough, I thought about you a day or so ago just because it's been a while. Congrats on the new camera. You deserve more subs!👍😀
Marty Rose Thank you ❤️
I think it was the road work video.
@@MCBWoodworks OH! You've got an excellent memory! You're right! I found the road work video on Reddit!
Video quality looks great. Wish you made more videos . So the Bolster Mills store is now your office?
bill st pierre thanks man! I am going to try but it is tuff fitting it around the real job.
I am across the bridge from the store. It’s a building my dad bought years ago and I did my first carving upstairs when I was 10.
I found you from Diagonal View on FB actually. Ive always wanted to start doing this but never knew where to start. I appreciate your videos you got a sub here buddy!
Hellonwheels999 thanks for the sub! and thanks for the heads up on the video on Facebook! Enjoy carving, it’s a lot of fun. I am working on my next project right now.
@@MCBWoodworks where do you find your pictures im trying to find a set of one bird from all sides to model from
Hellonwheels999 I typically do a google image search but those tend to be profiles. I have had good luck using Instagram hashtags to find odd angles.
@@MCBWoodworks yea i found one im going to try out, hopefully it works out your work is amazing and has inspired so many ideas, i enjoy building model cars and such but this looks so much more fun
Hellonwheels999 thank you! I am on Instagram @mcbwoodworks. I’d love to see what you do.
You were on UA-cam
👍 Great job! I think I found your channel because you used “power carving” in the title of the chickadee video.
Sean C Thank you!
Cool, I started using power carving because I wanted to make sure people clicking didn’t think it was going to be traditional carving.
Matt what colour dye did you use for the wood? Big fan of your work. Woodcock is stunning! Keep up the great videos and posts. Cheers from Nova Scotia.
Sandy, I use TransTint Green dye amzn.to/2vctaVV It is effected by how much you use, how long you dip it, what type of wood and what finish you put over it. If you use it I recommend a test run. Thank you! Cheers from Maine.
Appreciate the reply. S
LOOKS GREAT! I was wondering though, what is the hot liquid that you added the dye to? is it hot water? I follow riverbend woodworks and stumbled upon your video.
Thank you! It was hot water. They are concentrated water based dyes. I have read that using hot water helps them penetrate the wood.
I love riverbends work.
Reddit my dude. Awesome videos.
Congrue Woodworks that’s right! Thanks man!
Looking for fish carvings
What did you use on the underside (belly area) to create the void so the tint wouldn’t dye that portion?
I painted the area I wanted to stay the natural color with polyurethane. There was some slight bleeding but I was able to carefully sand it away.
MCB Woodworks thank you. I love your work, this one is my favorite so far!
Nice work Matt! I follow you on twitter. Is that basswood? ( I know it's a trout.)
J. Scott Bowen Hey Scott! It is a piece of curly soft maple. I use basswood for painted pieces.
Only a few months before we get out on the bikes!
