  • So far, there hasn't been a single European coach who transitioned to the NBA, after a successful run in the EuroLeague. In this video, we look at the differences between coaching methods in Europe & the US, specifically the things that would most definitely not work in the NBA.
Do you think coaches like Dimitris Itoudis, Zeljko Obradovic, Sarunas Jasikevicius or Ergin Ataman could ever make it over the Atlantic to take a head coaching spot?

Rules and the level of contac allowed by referees in Europe makes athleticism less important and makes talent much more valuable. There are tons of players getting minutes in NBA who wouldn't be able to abuse of their body in Euroleague and would never get a place in any Euroleague team because their lack of talent and there are also tons of players that are great in Euroleague and would never get signed by any NBA team because of their lack of athleticism.

It is also about the team culture of Europe-Balkans in general. You are also having lots of common breakfasts, and meetings and your coach is being included way more in your life with positive manners as well. Also, when you include that it is the case starting from your early career, you are getting more okay with this because they are in a sense as a father figure, rather than business friends. I was playing in U16 league in Turkey, and our coach was an Efes legend, from the team winning Korac Cup, and his ex-coach was our club owner and he still even though being 50 years old was getting harsh criticisms and being shouted in the face from his ex-coach where we were witnessing. When you know that it is not something personal and it is for your improvement you are taking it well. Also, for instance, once in a friendly game, the coach said in the timeout to me "is it too thick to take into your ass", I get angry and said "bald pimp" and we were about to fight and he didn't even take me to the bench. Then I played harder defense and after the game, we settled down and didn't even talk about it. This is game, both of us and all the team wanted to win, and so it is the anger, and high emotions of this. Ps. this is U16 summer friendly game, now think playing Final Four ahahaaha

I remember club officials ripping apart Ömer Yurtseven and David Mutaf when I was at Fener. there are some really bad bad people in Turkish basketball. I also remember how shocked I was when a legend of European basketball criticised a 17 year old in front of a press conference. It felt like he was trying to destroy Ömer Yurtseven rather than coach the team. We had great talent that year and everyone just left for other places some of us even gave up on Basketball. because whatever we do Ömer Onan's son was the star ad we were supposed to pass it to him. This is 2 years ago in Adidas Next Gen tournament in Istanbul I remmeber our beloved coach just sold on us and made us play complex sets that we practiced time to time because he wanted to show that he was ready to move on as a pro coach and we lost all our matches. anyone can look up our game plans In Turkish youth league and our play In the next gen tournament it was miles of what we played. Of my 7 years of Turkish basketball and 2 years in national youth levels I hated every time I had to talk with the coach or cşub officials. Yes national team was better since coaches were trying to build something but those dumbass club officials still tried to influence the national team coaches.

This is because coach in Europe is not just a coach to you. He is also your father, your grandfather, your uncle, your professor...He cares about you, he wants to teach you, to make you tough, wants to push you to your limits, he wants to make a player of you. In the NBA you are on your own and coaches do not give a sht about you. If you want to be better and stronger do it by yourself, if you do not want they do not care, will replace you.
Almost all of these coaches in the video are from Balkan (Serbia, Greeece, Turkey...) and Mediteranean area wich is pretty similar in mentality. And that is the way how we treat and teach our kids. You have to be TOUGH and they gonna make you TOUGH. Period.
There is a "joke" (but it's mostley true) about Balkan tehnique how parents learn their kids to swim. Throw them in the river or a pool and when kids start drowning they pulled em out for a few seconds to get air and then throw them again. Repeat that as many times as needed until kids start swiming or better say start to realize how to keep himself at the surface by calm moving hands and legs. No swiming classes no BS.

The thing is that it depends on how the coach overall is. Because a coach is yelling, doesn't mean it's bad. It is worse if a coach is just silently staying at the sideline. A coach like Trincheri is actually doing a very good job and is usually different when there is no game. In addition, he is not just angry but very emotional in general. Such a coach can sometimes be like a 6th player on the court. Yet, if a coach is just yelling at your players or is even blaming them hard, then it's obviously not good.
NBA and European basketball can't be compared anyways. The NBA is basically about making the shots, if you don't hit them, you are out, simple is that. European basketball on the other hand is much more about working as a team. So, if one individual fails to do his job, it might throw away the whole team effort. Defense can only be played with 5 people and to break the defense, it also needs the entire team. That's why you see such different style of coaching.

Everything you see on the court is dictated by the fans. What the fans pay for, they get. In Europe fans are more tribal and expect to see that in the court as well. Tension filled arenas, tough defenses, yelling, lots of contact. In the NBA people prefer a movie- like scenario with a good guy/ hero that wins the day. Traveling, ball carrying ruins the show so they're never called and the stars get a better treatment. It's all just a show with a lot of money involved and the fans are the ones paying for it.

If your boys give 100%, you know their limits, there is nothing but praise and support.
But, when you see them performing in practice with 50% effort and then being all sad on weekend because they lose a game…well it’s time for reality check. This outburst happen, since after the match players complain right about everything but themselves.
People in general want to win, they just don’t want to work for it. That’s why the lottery works.

NBA fan reactions to coaches calling out players is a lot different from European fans as well. Coach Nick Nurse called out Precious Achiuwa for his lack of consistency in rebounding and Gary Trent Jr. for his lack of deflections earlier this season and NBA fans were shocked and disappointed that the coach would call out his players like that. Nurse got his early coaching opportunities in Europe and still carries some of the European values in his coaching style. Oh, and by the way, Gary Trent Jr. had 7 steals in the first two games after his call-out. Public call-outs work when the coach knows how to do it at the right time and directs it toward a player who will receive that criticism well. Coaches have to know their players' personalities, there's no point in yelling at a player who is not going to improve by being yelled at. Ultimately, I don't see how running 1000 suicides make a player better, I'd prefer to focus on basketball mistakes (FTs missed, defensive miscommunications, bad screen navigation, etc.) in practice rather than just mindlessly running up and down the court for hours on end

This isn't just about NBA vs Euroleague. This is about how Americans and Europeans, especially traditional Eastern Europeans view life and work. Europeans view success as a result of a collaboration between different parts of a society or any organization. There are no single heroes individually saving everyone like comic book caricatures which most Americans like to believe. The foundation of success is the system and collaboration of different parts of that system and your value in that system as an individual is weighted based on your adaptation to that system in your particular role. Americans think individuals create success out of thin air and that's because of their foundational myths of white conquerors doing everything from scratch in a new continent. Trailblazers, Railroad tycoons, Industrial Inventors, always individuals over systems whereas Europe was mostly a stable, traditional bunch of nations sans the occasional world wars, in which individuals played a role rather than create it. I must say I agree with Europeans more on this issue since NBA teams are now drastically suffering for letting the star players have too much power and control over the teams. Nets are done, so are other clubs which follow their paths.

I don't know if you are being serious analysing "5 hour training" by Dusko Ivanovic, but I see this is not the first time on this channel. It was obviously not true, Dusko just didn't deny it directly, but the players had also been asked about this, and none of them confirmed this rumour. Why do you think Nedovic or Vildoza would just accept it and protect totally new coach? And who in the world would come to a group of 15 new players and make sure they hate him from day 1?! I mean, I know that DI has such a reputation, he definitely belongs to old school of coaching, but consider that this is not 2005. There are games every other day, there is a travel. It's almost physically impossible to have 5 hours trainings, even if he wished so. Also, players have their ways to speak up, and I'm sure they would if there was a reason.

I don’t agree with the last idea: that the style of coaching is gonna change because we have more star-player. Coach Messina (the head coach of Milan) has a very aggressive coaching style. now Milan just bought Mirotic (which I would classify as a “star player”) and I don’t think Messina is going to change his ways. Mirotic has implied that Messina’s role had a big part in him choosing to play in Milan (even for way less that what was offered to him in other cities) and Mirotic already knows Messina coaching style since he played under him before going to the NBA, so surely he is not bothered by how messina treats players.
Also there are many player who also went to the NBA (so they experienced different style of coaching) but still appreciate a more “aggressive” one. Gigi Datome (the one that was screamed against by Obradovic) still says that he is grateful to Obradivic and thanks him for everything, even for the “fuck-you” (his words not mine)

Everything is well said also in comment section, I just want to add up, that huge diffrence in european mentality is that if someone of authority is mad at you, screaming at you etc. that means he values you and wants you to succeed. Separating personal relationship with proffesional one in this context is also important. If you know someone respects you offcourt you shall not take it personally if you are scremed at during match. All this considered and valued as normal by fans also who not only agree with this approach but also demand it.

It's a totally different idea of basketball. Of course coaches in Europe could coach NBA. The most similar case would be Popovich. The thing is that not all the fans in Europe nor the coaches likes NBA. We love European Basketball as it is. More defensively, tactically, technically,... I'm Spanish coach and watch NBA games is exasperating for me. There's too many mistakes!!! In Europe there's no chance to make a mistake. If you commit one single mistake, you go to the beach. Here's there's no fixed rotations, you perform well, you play. We don't like NBA so I understand that many European coaches would have rejected to coach NBA, for sure.

Basket all is all about 2 things: score and defend in a very small amount of space against a team of five. This make It very hard so if the deference in tallend isnt very big then you need tactics. Thats why you need the coaches. So they can teach the team the tactics make the players better and help the team apply the right tactics in the right moment. Its like the war with the generals. This is what happens in european basket ball. Thats why a team with a small or medium badget can win the eurolegue or at list perform much better than We expert. In europe every defence and every offence matters. Thats why the teams are 100% in the moment and Thats why the fans enjoy every play in the game. The european teams do not jump very high, they dont run as fast as in the nba, they dont dunk as often as in the nba or score as much as in the nba. In the nba the teams shoot so many threes, i watched a lot of games were the playmaker takes the ball from one side of the court gets it to the other and shoot the three. Then the other team does the same again and again and again. Thats not basketball. If i want to see players compiting in threes or who Will make the best dunk or poster i can watch an all star game. I think in the nba they lost the meaning of what is a beautifull basketball game and focused on the show because it make more money. Now days even some games in the play off are boring. 82 games are way to much in a season. Dont mistake me i think that european basketball is way more fun to watch but there is no comparison in talent and if the two winners from the two leagues were too play ten games the nba team would win 9 to 10 times if not 10 out 10. But that doesnt make the nba league more interesting than eurolegue. And one last thing. In europe coaches are the boss of the teams and not the star players not because of they re ego but because they want to guide the team into winning. In the nba the stars control the teams because they want to win for them selfs or take more money and fame.

With Euroleague being coach-driven league and NBA player/superstar driven league, it’s pretty doubtful high calibre European coaches feeling the urge or desire to move across the pond. In Europe they feel like chess players controlling the pawns, it’s far more interesting. In the NBA they will be the “pawns”. Obviously it works the same for NBA superstars moving to Europe. They will lose their freedom and become some high calibre European’s coach pawn on a chessboard.

A lot of a coach's job in the nba is to deal with the media. While superstars are said to be necessary for championships, many players get influence that their game doesn't backup. Sometimes not having stars means a coach is actually free to coach. Many of the coaches are no good, even if they have the freedom to coach. However, the really good ones should have that freedom. Sometimes they make as much difference as a single superstar. Even better if you have the type of superstar who listens to a coach (Duncan with Pop).

i have to say a lot about this video ! But instat i will prompt you to make a research that will be great material for videos too .
check the decades 2000-2010 , 2010-2020 . and 2020-2022/03 . look for what type of coaches there were . what types of players there were . in what level the european clubs were . in what level the european countries were . and compare them with what we have today . the last two years .
Back then people had talent , basket iq , and those who made the effort to work and learn achieve the top .
I am sick and tired of european basket is being treated like the summer job for nba players ,come here make some money and show us their skill ( mostly their luck of it )
All of us that still remember the last 20 years in europe basket ( that is was far better than the nba ) , we watching now today and it feels like we watch an U15 league .
The plays and tactics from back then only got better today . what it is missing ? Maybe the players ? Of course it does . There is no skill today ! Because every kid try to imitate the nba style . But the forgot they play in europe , with europe rules .
So what happens when you take a gumnastic athlete to run a marathon ? They will loose !
If you were a coatch what your options will be then ? Maybe to train them ? Does that sound stupid ?
And also what it is about the 5 hours training ? Check the training of those nba stars you love , you see that 5 hours is the minimum for them .
Check every world class athlete in every sport and compare ! Check every olympiad partisipan and olympiad medal winner to see their work schedule !
God forbid today basketball player ,if we let them sweat in practise , maybe they will catch a cold ! !
Also you puta part of a video from zeljko press conferance . i say to your viewers to go see the full video !
For everyone else who knows that press conferance , remember zeljko words . "i know i will keep winning" .
Does anyone knows what was the carear of those Yugoslavia players that he mention after that world cup ?
That it is still happening today ! That why our basket quality is worst than the 80s !

European basketball is more intellectual for a number of reasons. Players can adapt, the audience has the potential to understand and accept/embrace. US basketball hasn't got such characteristics. Is more individual driven. For instance it would be unacceptable in Europe in a counter attack of 3 against 1 defender for the star of the team to shoot a 3 pointer. However it's fine in NBA. Or the way players try to humilate their opponents with their reactions in dunks and blocks. That's not happening in Europe.

I disagree with most of this. Full disclosure I haven’t watched much euro basketball. That said, what I disagree with is what you assume about the nba. The nba absolutely draws up plays in timeouts like you show and even with 82 they definitely have game plans with heavy film review. Also although nba coaches don’t yell (cause they get paid less and contribute less to winning than players)college coaches definitely do even to Kevin durant (see Izzo or coach k or staukus coach at Michigan) It’s not that nba coaches couldn’t yell or run players it’s that there’s a belief that it doesn’t help. It seems like there’s a chance the screaming and running actually makes your team worst and get fired sooner..? A little respect between coach and player might even work..? It’s not like nba coaches without superstars yell a lot or even that those who do have superstars yell at the bad players. It’s one thing to be a kid learning and have coaches yelling at you but when you’re a professional that’s crazy. You’re paid for that reason and if you’re bad you’ll be out of a job. Like the guy says in the video, he’s a grown man and would like to be treated like one. Seems like your just stressing everyone out for no reason.

In nba is different mentality. Everybody is on schedule and outside work they are doing what they want(of course within conditions of the contract). In europe is different. Also no second NBA league like in Europe, a second divison where you actually get punished for being in the last 2 or 3 of the conference. NBA teams have no repercursions, if they are bad, they dont give a fuck. They will deliberately loose for a better draft spot chance. Every year, regular season looks more and more like a circus watching players get incredible numbers and the real basketball begins in the playoffs. They need to find a format where the lowest seeds get punished for being at the bottom, like dropping to the 2nd division with no draft spots then you will see how good and important of a game would the Rockets vs Magic could be.

Another big difference is that in NBA if you have a big contract you play no matter what. Even if you make defensive mistakes. In Europe, even if you are a star on the team, if you do not deliver, or if you make some consecutive mistakes, you are gonna get benched, period. Every player knows and assumes this. Imagine an European coach in the NBA benching Harden for stupid concentration defensive mistakes, and/or playing him less than 30 min. He would be next day in GM's office demanding this coach to be fired.

You are really riding on that Dusko Ivanovic Stauskas story. We all heard it he will never play in Europe because of hard trainings and unacceptancce of losing or whatever... The guy made the most idotic mistake I've ever seen, he is an idiot and no one would take him...
As for Dusko's "ideology" being a thing of the past, since he came Crvena Zvezda made a U turn and from what could've been a disasterous season now it looks like it might be great season, Crvena Zvezda won every match in both ABA and Eurolague... Of course drop in form is inevetable but in just few weaks he made a team look like real contenders for ABA title and top 8 in Euroleague, Crvena Zvezda is now very tough team to beat. And you also could quote Mirza Teletovic who said that only players who don't want to improve their game can dislike Ivanovic, so there are two sides to every story.
And why coaches from Europe don't do well in the US, I think it's because it's basically a different sport, some in game rules are different, organization is different, expectations are different, culture is different, hierarchy, fans, media, everything is different...
