Hi, everyone. I just want to say how much I respect & admire John Lodge's restraint playing bass here. He mostly sticks to playing quarter-notes when other, less disciplined bassists might run wild. His solid tempo and consistent dynamics really anchor the rhythm section. It's a work of art. Plus, he nails blending in his backing vocals. He's a genius.

These guys have always personified dignity and quality. For them, it has always been about the music. If you want cynical songs about bummers, look elsewhere. They dare to infuse their music with actual melodies that are neither moody nor blues. They're just...well, a class act.

Way to go ........the Moodies have sustained themselves for almost 5 decades now! This is the best song in the album Strange Times!

No doubt about it. These guys walked into a world of blues oriented rock and teeny bopper garbage. They set a standard for truly beautiful music. Both in music and lyrical quality that has not been surpassed.
I remember them being in the forefront of the LSD craze. They touched people's souls and that is a strong step in music. Great songs, well played and a heart that spoke to you. I love these guys and have since they broke. Peace and take care.

The first album I ever bought was a moody blues album back in the 60s when I was 15 years old, and here I am downloading English Sunset to my Kindle 50 years later. Their Royal Albert Hall concert in 2000 was a classic. Love these guys.

Great tune, and classically, instantly recognizable Moody Blues all the way. So classic, in fact, that even though this song was written in 1999, it wouldn't have sounded out of place on the much earlier Long Distance Voyager album, which surfaced in 1981.

Pretty scary to realise Strange Times is two decades old! I can remember this coming out like it was a couple of years ago. Gee! AND, apart from the Xmas album, the last studio album from the Moodies. In the late 60’s they’d give us a new album every year. Crikey, they could have done another 20 albums. IF ONLY !!!!

Alas, the music business is as full of politics _(translation: bullshit)_ as any other, but the Moodies' exclusion from the R&R HoF is an injustice that has finally been righted.
See, the thing is, the Moody Blues don't care about that stuff. Of course, they graciously accepted when they were finally inducted, being the classy guys that they are. But for them it has always been about the music.
Maybe it's because they don't sing about bummers - and the fact that they have remained staunchly *_non-political_* - that they were shunned for so long.
But the truth is that you can find many groups who were inducted sooner who haven't been in the business anywhere near as long, or sold anywhere near as many records, or have anywhere near the following...across multiple generations.
I guess it finally became too big an embarrassment to the R&R HoF that the Moodies were excluded, and they finally inducted them in 2018.

Normally I'm a beastie-boys-fan - but the Moodys are really something special - so old and still so cool - still standing on stage with such a kind of classical rock - and if you ever listened to an interview with justin hayward: nice and still normal - a guy you would like to drink an ale in your favourite pub with.
However: this song is awful and has got a really splendid hookline! The best song after you started your car to make a trip to visit a good ol'friend! Excellent!

I always felt bad for Ray in the post-Pinder years. He was given almost NO songs to sing lead on, and had to stand there shaking his tambourine throughout all those Hayward pop songs. The Moodies were a BAND in the 70s; all contributed; they played together, just the five of them, no backup musicians and singers. After Mike Pinder left they were just a pop group of Justin and John, as they are in this sad video.
