Gotta hand it to you man!! After years of watching YT and noodling thousand or so vids I recognize your approach of separate components is very well thought out. Kudos!!
A plus from me. I work on splitters and have used a bunch. I look forward to building a custom one for myself. I want to make it like yours with separate power unit. I'd like to be able to put it in the front receiver hitch of my truck and keep it mounted when I'm working wood. Then I could just nose up to where ever I'm working and keep it on my truck. I like the idea of a compact power unit because it can be stored in the shop and won't take up as much room. I keep my splitters inside but they are bulky. I mainly don't like the motors being left in the weather. Great video sir. Nice job.
I just bought and tried to use a 4-ton electric log splitter with a 4-inch tall wedge. What an exercise in patience and frustration... Now I'm looking for a bigger one. I was grinning ear-to-ear when I watched this video... and you blew my mind with that sideways cut! You must have searched high and low to find such a knotted piece of wood! Awesome demo - that's pretty much exactly what I want, but I haven't found it yet. I guess you only get a proper splitter like that when you build your own... wish I had the time and the skills to do that.
Yeah, but in my case the little thing didn't stall out, but since it only has about a 2/3 stroke and such a short wedge, the wood rarely split all the way through and would get stuck on the wedge. After I wrestle if off the wedge, I'd have to flip it over and cut it from the other side too, so I was handling the wood way too much. And for me it was just frustrating. Especially with bigger logs or wood that didn't just pop apart - kinda like your Oak there. However, I didn't try any major knotty stuff like you did - I'm sure it would have just moaned at me and that's all!
Funny, I have a 6.5 ho, 22 ton, and I split mostly Cottonwood and Elm. People have told me to get a 37+ ton, but mine splits 99% of what I have, and my saw(s) take care of the ones that it can't split. I just have to come up with a lift for it. I am limited to what I can lift on the unit, and that's getting les every year, LOL. Nice demo! It shows what someone who knows what their doing with hydraulics can do.
Love that shearing action. My neighbor's 35 ton factory built splitter does the same thing, but I am impressed that a small 5hp 18 ton unit can shear thru oak like that.
Wow , I’m amazed , I just bought a homemade wood splitter , I think he said it’s a 20 ton , i hope it performs as good as yours , great video Thankyou for sharing
Great idea, it's always handy to have hydraulic power around the farm. My splitter is closer to 40 tons and like yours, it will go through anything. I even cut small stuff across the grain. Cheaper and quicker than the chain saw.
i had a much larger one a few years back with knots,,,,and splitter didnt have a problem. It was after the split that we discovered two large horseshoes inside,,,splitter never missed a beat. We woulda had a bit of trouble on that one with a wedge or an axe or saw.....thanks for the splitter invention!!
That's a very nice build you have there! Gotta love those two stage pumps. I like how it breaks down and is very portable for use with your can crusher too. Good job!
Well done! Great idea to have the pieces break down for easy moving. I am thinking that you could have the engine a few more feet away under an insulated cover thus making your work area quieter. Excellent demonstration of the unit's power.
I bought a homemade log splitter with 5hp Honda engine. It will bog down and kill the motor when going thru knots. Do I need a bigger pump to pump the fluid? What would cause the motor to stall out to much pressure or what. I'm new to this. Seems the 5hp would be enough to split tammarack or red fir
Great splitter. I just re powered and old home made splitter that I found on craigslist with a 6.5 hp predator from HF. The pump is an old 8 g.p.m Vickers off of some kind of farm equip. My splitter will not split larger Oak, just stalls out and kills the motor , even at wide open throttle, how the hell did you get 5 hp to split Oak like that ??????????
thats amazing, you did a great Job of engineering that baby, I seen 22 ton splitters just bog down and stop yours with less just cuts thru it even sideways A+
I have been looking at slitters and thry all have the3 really thick anvil. I figured the thin anvil would be far better, but to cut an oak log _sideways_ ...awesome.
Very satisfying to see that knotty wood split up. That's the stuff the neighbors will actually dump off at my place for me to use as fire wood cause they do not want to mess with it.
could you list the components you used? I got the 11 gal pump and 5hp Honda. what size tank and what size/stroke hydraulic cylinder, etc very impressive. I would like to make a similar setup
4" bore 24" stroke, the chain is hooked to a friction because the motor has a governor on it this way I can idle it down, when I need to stack wood that I split
Hey nice vid... I want to make one as well and thought I needed a big ol 5” bore... obviously not... out of Curiosity what is your bore size and psi rating? Thanks
The ram is a four inch , and the pump powers a hydraulic drive all terrain forklift. it can lift 8,000 lbs. it is a pettibone lift. the pressure on the lift is 2500 lbs
bos dad Hmmm,,,you should have about 14 ton then...(.if that is the _internal_ diameter of the ram you use on the splitter), which is close to the 17 the OP has. How thin is the wedge compared to his? The thicker the wedge and the blunter the cutting edge the harder you have to push. Also why do you say you have half the power? Can it not split wood (low pressure in the hydro system)? Is the stroke very slow (slow fluid delivery)?
as I stated at the beginning. I have the same set up as shown on the video. same wedge same ram, same push block. much bigger motor and hydraulic pump. less power.
***** I'm not sure I could give you anymore info than I already have. I gave you the ram size, I gave you the pump pressure, I gave you the engine size, and when you can't figure it out ,,, some how I'm the testy one ? well, thanks for trying, but I was actually hoping to get the person that posted the video to answer the question.
I built my tank 12x12x12 which holds 7.48 gallons and the 4"x24" ram holds 1.3 gallons giving a total of 8.78 gallons, i never had a problem with it getting too hot, I used Brand hydraulics detent valve with 1/2 work ports and hoses good place to get a 3000 p.s.i. cylinder is ebay output is 18 tons
Thanks for reply yes might take a chance and get a 11gpm pump 8gpm sounds a little to small to be worth making a splitter like you say in your comments yours works haha thanks
I wouldn't have a splitter that wouldn't go through a full stroke. If it splits before the end, hit the reverse cycle. Plain and simple. You can't expect the machine to do all the work for you.
This splitter is amazing for only 5hp engine I to am fabricating a splitter I have a 5.5 Honda gx engine but local firm advised me a 8 gpm pump would be best 2 stage such as what you have on yours do you think i could get away with an 11 gpm or will it stall engine thank you for the video great splitter
my pump is a 2 stage haldex 11 g.p.m. pump 1 st stage is 11 2nd stage I believe is 5 or 6 g.p.m as long as the power shifts should be fine , I do know it won't push a 13 g.p.m. from experience.
+Burt Hulbert Really, I just watched one where someone was demoing a splitter with a rotten 6" pine round. Looked like something you could split with a claw hammer.
I can split it all with my log splitter which has a hydraulic lift to get it from the ground to the ram. I can split 4 foot logs at 24 inch length. This is a $7,500 log splitter. I purchased it used with no regrets for $2,500. Just to test it for capacity I laid in an aluminum automobile rim10 sideways in front of the ram with two x in planking on each end. It crush the rim with ease and no damage to the equipment.
14 tons is plenty if your pressure is right and you know how to get the best out of a block. I've got a worn out Briggs % horse and run it about 1/3 throttle and it'll split anything I can put on it. Has popped grade-8 bolts on the wedge. Mine is backwards to this in that it shoves the wedge through the wood so you don't have to run down the wood to split more off of it. I've had to cut some blocks in half so I could lift them but the splitter worked them up, no problem Good video.
Plasmaman....Great Splitter!!! Wow, really ingenious. We have been working on an attachment to make splitting more efficient and safer. Search Gorillabac Log Lift and check out another way of how to "Get Your Wood Up". The only tool that will pull, lift and position your wood.......... for splitting. Save your Back and let a Gorillabac do the work.
Sweet splitter, I heat my house and weekend cabin with wood I split by hand :( Yep I would have to drink a beer and watch that log burn in the camp fire lol. There's no way I'd split that by hand.
Gotta hand it to you man!! After years of watching YT and noodling thousand or so vids I recognize your approach of separate components is very well thought out. Kudos!!
Bad Ass ! Almost 5yrs since the upload and people still enjoyin it. Thanks
Great job love the "Budweiser handle" you're entitled to a few beers after building that machine
A plus from me. I work on splitters and have used a bunch. I look forward to building a custom one for myself. I want to make it like yours with separate power unit. it is surprising how much it takes to split a little wood
Dude that's one of the best homemade Splitters I've ever seen great power!

I think you have shown that this machine is officially unstoppable!
just watched the log splitter, Outstanding I love to watch video's like that, 73 years old and oak knots have made a lot of my days miserable.
Love that shearing action. My neighbor's 35 ton factory built splitter does the same thing, but I am impressed that a small 5hp 18 ton unit can shear thru oak like that.

One of the best I've seen and it's plenty fast for how hard I ever want to work.
Thank you I'm one person and I can't keep up
You've got some great ideas. Really like your splitter, Ken from Indiana
Nice job. Very strong pump for a five horse too. Nice control handle, lol.
Congratulations on building an awesome machine.
Well done! Great idea to have the pieces break down for easy moving. I am thinking that you could have the engine a few more feet away under an insulated cover thus making your work area quieter. Excellent demonstration of the unit's power.
nicely done. the narrow wedge is a great idea.
it's amazing what 5hp will do. I am in the process of building a 5hp wheel horse garden tractor.
Great build cobber. Well done.
Wow, even cuts cross grain in that gnarly hunk of timber. Impressive.
I bought a homemade log splitter with 5hp Honda engine. It will bog down and kill the motor when going thru knots. Do I need a bigger pump to pump the fluid? This splitter is a beast. Lucky you.
Right on!!! Let's see any Kinetic log splitter do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Impressive~~
AWESOME SPLITTER ! nothing can stop it "!
Great splitter. I just re powered and old home made splitter that I found on craigslist with a 6.5 hp predator from HF. The pump is an old 8 g.p.m Vickers off of some kind of farm equip. My splitter will not split larger Oak, just stalls out and kills the motor , even at wide open throttle, how the hell did you get 5 hp to split Oak like that ??????????
nice job on making it multi-purpose. would like to see how you set it up for a can crusher.
Thats a fine splitter and having the wedge small narrow has its power advantage..
I love the Budweiser tap handle on the splitter valve
Great demo on this video. No rotten softwood here.
The real thing ! ! !
thats amazing, you did a great Job of engineering that baby, I seen 22 ton splitters just bog down and stop yours with less just cuts thru it even sideways A+
That was one of the most gnarly pieces I've seen, much less seen split up. Would have just saw cut that without a splitter.
20 minutes ago i searched rotator cuff exercises and now i'm on my 4th log splitting video
iamnotfernando hahahaha at least you remember how you got here
I have been looking at slitters and thry all have the3 really thick anvil. I figured the thin anvil would be far better, but to cut an oak log _sideways_ ...awesome.

I've inherited knotty stumps like that with the home I purchased. 34 inch rounds. Fiskars X27 won't touch it.
That's impressive ...would like to see a list of equipment used.👍👍
hi there just stopped in checking out other channels . yours looks like what i am in to . looking forward to more thanks john
That 2-stage pump sure works well, it's like dropping into low gear when the wood tries to resist.
Beautiful video. I kept thinking of how I could weave that thing into a novel I'm writing and it gave me a hardon.
could you list the components you used?
I got the 11 gal pump and 5hp Honda. what size tank and what size/stroke hydraulic cylinder, etc
very impressive. I would like to make a similar setup
Wow, Impressive. Just powers through. Thanks for the video.
I am most impressed! Excellent design -----inovative engineering. Bravo!
very impressive especially the piece split sideways
Bad ass log splitter. Nice!
Do you have a two stage pump on your splitter? Nice video.
Yes 11 gpm to 6 gpm
Thanks. 👍
Dude, that is bad to the bone for 5hp and 17tn.
Very impressive
Peace
hey , nice splitter. what size cylinder I that and what is the chain for on the throttle? I have the same motor im building one with.
4" bore 24" stroke, the chain is hooked to a friction because the motor has a governor on it this way I can idle it down, when I need to stack wood that I split
That is impressive as well as versatile, wise use of time and machine.
liking the budweiser tap handle
Hey nice vid... I want to make one as well and thought I needed a big ol 5” bore... obviously not... out of Curiosity what is your bore size and psi rating? Thanks
If my calculations are right it’s a 4” bore with 3000 psi rating?
4" bore 3000 p.s.i.
Sweet! Any other applications for that portable hydro unit? Other than splitting or compacting cans?
Robert Viani also have a hydraulic roll bender for steel,
I have basically the same splitting set up you do. I am powering it with a large forklift.( 6cyl ) but I have half the power, any suggestions ??
Bigger ram, Bigger hydraulic pump
The ram is a four inch , and the pump powers a hydraulic drive all terrain forklift. it can lift 8,000 lbs. it is a pettibone lift. the pressure on the lift is 2500 lbs

thats one hell of a powerful splitter nice one

What size Steel is your blade? 15mm?
I wouldn't have a splitter that wouldn't go through a full stroke. If it splits before the end, hit the reverse cycle. Plain and simple. You can't expect the machine to do all the work for you.
Very impressive !
Greetings from Holland
Wow! Nice...! Well done man! That's the way to split those mean nots!!!
😄😉👍 Keep it up!
Stay Safe. Work Hard. Live Well.
i think maybe the push plate could do with a lip on each edge or maybe ridges welded to the plate to prevent the log slipping

I have some nasty looking chunks of silver maple that look like that and was wondering if a rental splitter would do the job.
love the bud puller how can I get one??
ebay
That's got real oomph. Great one
what type of pump did you use mister?complements for your very powerful log splitter💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
This is the first video where the wood wasn't half rotten pine or poplar wood.
+Burt Hulbert Really, I just watched one where someone was demoing a splitter with a rotten 6" pine round. Looked like something you could split with a claw hammer.
ShysterLawyer yup. You never see tough oak being busted Like this.

where did you get that wedge?
3/4 " steel plate cut on my CNC plasma cutter can do it with a torch also
Wow very nice good machine thank you

Time to move to the country. I kept thinking...I wonder how may have flew out and landed on main street?
absolutely love it !
That looks like it puts tons of pressure on the engine
i like the sound the wood makes
impressive wood splitter. if it splits like a chainsaw like splitting the wrong way. wow!
Nice machine!!!
Nice build
Double cool. Could you post a parts break down please?
look up can crusher walk through by plasmaman2507
Thanks. Are you in the Moab area? We go there a lot on our motorcycles...beautiful country side up there.
Cedar hills north of provo
Found it. Will give you a holler next time we are close by on another one of our scooter adventures.
That thing is a beast!
Finally I'm impressed.
,έσπασε
That thing is a beast
what size is your hydraulic ram please
4x24 I'm running 11 g.p.m. 2 stage pump
Very nice, thanks for sharing.
The thing about wood heat you stay warm two ways eather by gathering and splitting or sitting by the stove
where where I wanna see
Sweet splitter, I heat my house and weekend cabin with wood I split by hand :( Yep I would have to drink a beer and watch that log burn in the camp fire lol. There's no way I'd split that by hand.
The splitter kicks ass but the handle could us work, dogfish would look better! Nice machine.
WOW impressive!!. Nice job!. Peace
Nice machine - bud tap handle haha.
lol that piece would have made a nice bowl. Support your local wood turner! knotty wood doesn't stack well anyway =P
powerful bit of kit .Like it
totally righteous. I want it.
Impressive.
My 5 ton TSC splitter does not work that well.
man awesome splitter but the best thing about it all is the handle. Hahaha awesome
What a pain in the rear that log would have been to split with an axe
What a beast, I had to field burned these.
