Wellesz was an authentic harnonist and melodist who composed at a time when he was challenged both by Debussy and Schoenberg. He is almost forgotten nowadays. That is a pity indeed.
Here is a very beautiful and touching piece written in a rather impressionist style by a composer who will still write after 1950. His technique belongs to the extended tonality, in which the tonal roots are very clear. Wellesz deserves to be better known. All his music which I heard has this half tone poetry.

Probabilmente si tratta più di un gusto basato su una modalità reinterpretata in chiave modernista, con dei punti in comune con i contemporanei italiani. Comunque mi sembra domini in tutti i suoi pezzi pianistici una sorta di forte impronta spiritualista e visionaria....
