Please note, Dylan - in all your reviews/videos of the reducer you have never mentioned that under normal conditions the reducer sticks solidly to the backing structure and cannot be removed. It is essential for new users to put a layer of lubricant on the external threads of the OTA before fitting the reducer otherwise they will never get it off without the most horrendous effort. Mine was stuck on throughout the close Mars opposition and could not be removed until I got specialist equipment. Very frustrating.
Another excellent video Dylan. Really impressive work on the advertising video for Bintel. Congrats on picking up the .7X reducer. My "retirement setup" will someday consist of the C11 Edge or C14 Edge with a .7X reducer. Keep up the great work! Scott
I have an 8-inch EdgeHD and the .7X Celestron Reducer for it. It works very well visually with ultra wide angle eyepieces as long as they are 25mm and less in focal length. It does work well photographically but an 8-inch EdgeHD and the .7X reducer will not cover a full frame sensor or 35mm film frame. It will work very well with an APS sized chip. So far I am using it visually and sometimes with lunar imaging when I want a wider than usual field of view with my ZWO ASI 290MC camera. When I get a camera suited for deep sky imaging I'll be using the reducer most of the time.
ZWO EAF Bracket for Celestron C8/C9.25/C11/C14 For Celestron EdgeHD 9.25" and the Celestron .7x Reducer Lens for EdgeHD 925 # 94245 you will have to file down the rounded end of the Bracket that mounts to the Telescope Focus. If not you cannot screw on the Reducer and when you have the Reducer installed you cannot mount the bracket to the Telescope Focus, 1/16 of an inch to big.
Binge-watching older St⭐️ r Stuff videos is a clear sign that skies are not clear and the weather‘s shoddy up here..🤪 Nice video, thanks again for sharing and enlightening us, Dylan! The focal reducer is def on the list for my tiny 8” Edge, really want to tickle as much as possible out of this OTA. Same for the mount, but that is a different story..
Expensive but worth it. Having a RASA rather pre-empts owning a reducer for 9.25 however. FOV in a RASA beats it at F2 hands up. Doesn't it? Another issue with vignetting can be the T adaptor itself. The Celestron T adaptor at prime focus comes in various diameters to screw on the SCT, at least for 11 inch and 14 inch OTAs.
That's true! Finding the perfect back focal distance (BFD) would be ideal. The 11" RASA f2 is about half the focal length of the 9.25" at F7 so this is a nice configuration to have to get up close to small stuff. The horsehead would look great with this setup particularly.
Hello... I have a pair of 8" ota's .. Celestron HD and GSO RC . How much can I reduce the focal lenght until I start to notice vignetting in a FF sensor ?

Dylan, Cool equipment video. I got a 925 Edge last year but was then bummed I could not find a FR. Eventually found the Optec, which seems to work fine; don't like the loose lens assembly and the special adapters, plus it can't be used with eyepieces as far as I know. Have you posted any pics with the Celestron 0.7 FR? Would love to take a look. Asteroids or satellites? Quite a few fast objects for one session. Thanks for sharing. John
John Adastra hi John! The helix in the video is the only image taken with the 0.7x so far .. and agree with you re the optec design. The timeframe in the animation is about an hour so I would assume asteroids (I’ll solve them astrometrically later) as satellites typically whiz by faster, brighter at lower orbits.
Have seen some geosynchronous satellites move through an object's FOV, especially when close to the celestial equator. But I think those would just move at sidereal rate and would all move in one direction. So probably asteroids, how fortuitus!

Thank You for your review. I got a chance to test my 0.7 reducer two nights ago with my full frame Canon Eos5D Mk2. Although the sharpness seems ok, I am somewhat puzzled by the results: * I got a severe vignetting with a narrower image scale and is not centered (shifted towards the left side). I would say that it is completely acceptable only inside a 24 mm circle. * Comparing images taken with and without the reducer, I got an image scale of 0.78x, quite a difference with the specified 0.7x! * Celestron also specifies that you gain a full step in exposure time but my results show that it is only 0.35 steps! I know that you mention a certain amount of vignetting in your video but your camera might have a smaller sensor compared to a full frame DSLR. Would you have any comments on any of my issues above. Thank you
It's the curse of having a big chip, I agree! As astrophotography gains in popularity all the vendors are having to design OTAs and accessories with larger chips in mind. Those results with the F-ratio are interesting .. I've yet to try a similar test.
Hi Dylan - with a non Edge SCT - is field curvature worse when running with a reducer (f6.3) or worse when Barlowed up, for high power on planets? Ps does curvature bother you visually or just photographically? Would love to get down there for a look at '47 Tucane' and 'Omega Centauri' Clear Skies!

Celestron 9.25" EHD can be used at F10 (native), f7 (reducer) or f2 (hyperstar) which I think makes it a worthwhile investment. That's 3 scopes for the price of one! Good all rounder.. planets, deep space.. whatever really.

As I heard you used the Optec Lepus reducer, I had to ask: At the recommended 105 mm backfocus (at least for my edge 8 HD scope), I never see round stars with the Lepus on the edges. Stars are a little stretched as in your video. Is this normal or maybe I got a bad reducer? Thanks!
I think it's "normal" for the Lepus .. The Celestron one is indeed a little better (which is hardly surprising given it's made by the same people as the scope!)
Awesome vids mate! Thoughts between Hyperstar and the 0.7x reducer on an EdgeHD9.25? Would the Hyperstar negate the need for the reducer in terms of FOV? Or is having 0.7x a good option for certain objects where there Hyperstar would be too "zoomed out"?
Dylan, did you maintain back focus at exactly 146mm from the camera-side of the reducer to the camera sensor, or did adding that filter wheel push the back focus out past 146mm? I hear that if you are too far either side of 146mm you'll get bloated stars off-axis.
Thanks Ross.. I paid no attention to correct BFD at all as I could only use the T-adapter I had on hand .. The stars didn't seem very different with or without the filterwheel though but it is something I'll measure properly!

I'm definitely a reflector guy, and no idea on the availability of 36's yet BUT I won't get one only because I don't *really* need it with the scopes I have. It would be a cool new FOV though for some wider stuff and big mosaics of massive regions.
g`day dylan great video on the focal reducer i seen the new bintel add a couple of days ago as a youtube pre main feature add well done thanks for the reducer video as i have been thinking about the reducer and hyperstar for my 8"edgeHD ..... am i right thinking the vizual back will not fit on to the reducer and you have to get the t adapter and t ring .. sold separately to the reducer .. as i don't have either and i am trying to weigh up the costs of getting a wider field (and faster exposure times) from the 8" sct FOV at F10 that i am using now the one for the 8" has been out for a while and might be different(smaller) and you can use the old visual back ???? i dont know ... thanks again for the test of the celestron .07 x focal reducer its arrived at a very handy time in the decision process for me.... i liked the first light warts and all aspect of the test and i hope you can do another video when you have had time to play with it to sort the vignetting / spacing / weather issues. to see the true potential of the celestron 0.7 focal reducer ...loved the violin on the clean the sensor scene lol i feel that way when i clean the corrector plate .. not brave enough for the camera sensor yet lol cheers james D
They are indeed! I'd like to do a video on how to identify them eventually. It's a bit fiddly in the astrometrica software I've been using and I'd love to find a better alternative.
That's a pity. Your content is excellent, and your delivery is laid-back, pleasant and quiet. Your "packaging", both video and music, is disproportionately loud and in your face. So now I only occasionally come back to your videos and when I do I usually give it the thumbs down.

Why not just use hyperstar instead of Rasa? Hyperstar 8 has F 1.9 / Focal Length 390mm / Image circle 28mm RASA 8 has F 2.0 / Focal Length 400mm / Image circle 22mm
@@DylanODonnell right on, I'm actually planning on getting the c6 hyperstar, since its relatively cheap and 300mm focal length supporting a 28mm sensor at f1.9... insane.
idk if coincidence or what but video time shoudve been 1 second less. coz after that, the total video time and the size of his mirror wouldve matched. 9.25. Like if you found that out with me.
Thats the thing I dont like the hd series as the reducer is an outrageous price and heavy. I like my 9.25. Mind you the HD series is more for astrophotography

Recently I got a used EM-200 Temma 2, which should hold it nicely and I can't wait to start imaging with it. I use a full frame modified Nikon D610, you think the vignetting will be acceptable? I believe it could be improved further if I'd determined the exact back focal distance.

Yeh huge difference.. SCTs are great for planets :) Bigger the better. I don't use eyepieces (see my video about eyepieces ;)

I think you mean the dew shield? It's cheap and even if dew isn't a problem I'd highly recommend it as it also blocks out light.

They are good to have for options .. the smaller the focal length / f-number the easier astrophotography gets :)

g`day dylan great video on the focal reducer i seen the new bintel add a couple of days ago as a youtube pre main feature add well done thanks for the reducer video as i have been thinking about the reducer and hyperstar for my 8"edgeHD ..... am i right thinking the vizual back will not fit on to the reducer and you have to get the t adapter and t ring .. sold separately to the reducer .. as i don't have either and i am trying to weigh up the costs of getting a wider field (and faster exposure times) from the 8" sct FOV at F10 that i am using now the one for the 8" has been out for a while and might be different(smaller) and you can use the old visual back ???? i dont know ... thanks again for the test of the celestron .07 x focal reducer its arrived at a very handy time in the decision process for me.... i liked the first light warts and all aspect of the test and i hope you can do another video when you have had time to play with it to sort the vignetting / spacing / weather issues. to see the true potential of the celestron 0.7 focal reducer ...loved the violin on the clean the sensor scene lol i feel that way when i clean the corrector plate .. not brave enough for the camera sensor yet lol

They are indeed! I'd like to do a video on how to identify them eventually. It's a bit fiddly in the astrometrica software I've been using and I'd love to find a better alternative.

Hyperstar 8 has F 1.9 / Focal Length 390mm / Image circle 28mm
RASA 8 has F 2.0 / Focal Length 400mm / Image circle 22mm

Does this reducer work with the 9.25 Hyperstar?
The hyperstar is a reducer at the front, this is a reducer at the back, so no. The hyperstar bypasses the back image train entirely.

Thats the thing I dont like the hd series as the reducer is an outrageous price and heavy. I like my 9.25. Mind you the HD series is more for astrophotography

I think your editing is great (I used to edit for Dutch TV several decades ago) and the videos are entertaining, filled with helpful info and quite funny as well. Love your stuff, Dylan!! Did you even use the Lepus 0.62x reducer after buying the 0.7 Celestron reducer? I have the same set-up but I didn't have a strong enough mount for it. Recently I got a used EM-200 Temma 2, which should hold it nicely and I can't wait to start imaging with it. I use a full frame modified Nikon D610, you think the vignetting will be acceptable?
