- I was able to purchase a new GigaParts Explorer Carbon Fiber mast while at Hamvention 2024. Thanks to my friend, Mike K8MRD, for helping me obtain one of the few that were in stock.
In this video Sandy W7NRS and I hike to the top of two mountains (Summits on the Air) within the Coconino National Forest (Parks on the Air) to activate a SOTA/POTA combo using this mast. We put it to the test in high winds and it held up like a champ.

WG0AT... what a legendary callsign
I really like that Explorer mast! Too bad about the wildfire damage in that area. Enjoyed the activation! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
I'm learning cw mode, Great videos from your side, I appreciate your support to the other station ( min 9) you slow down the to complete the QSO, hope someday we made one QSO via CW, saludos, XE2GRC, 73s
Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment and for visiting my channel
Thanks Charlie - us slow pokes sure appreciate you slowin down - hi to Sandy 73 dit dit
Nice, I recently ordered the mast and can't wait for it.
Nice Activation to both of you. Keep up the great work! - Jason, WV3V
Both are great hikes. I hope you shared the jerky with Sandy.
Nice qrs for the slow guy like ur ant choice
Thanks for that. I wish the Yaesu menus made it a little easier to get to the CW speed. Spacing is the next best thing when there's no time to fiddle around with menus.
Thanks for the video. Looked like a great hike.
Good to see sandy do some ssb on a sota.
Excellent video as always, Red. I actually copied some of that by ear! I think the copying is starting to sink in. Sending is no problem, hasn't been since CW Academy Lvl 2.5 a few years ago. Hope to work you someday!
Take care de NG3P!
I am looking for those explorer masts. I've been walking the neighborhood with a pack on to help get some time with weight on. I will be doing so after i finish this video. I am seriously thinking of building a linked dipole, you put that idea in my head and it stuck.
Wohoooo....BEAUTIFUL HIKE with some Deers around. Hopefully no Rattlers...stay safe & tnx for shring the Video. 73 de Uncle Günter 💯👍🙋♂
thank you
Hi Charlie,
Was listening when Sandy was on SSB, but heard nothing. I believe I heard you on CW, but currently my CW is not up to par. Both of you stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Well done Folks. I had a couple QSO with WA7JTM on 10m lately from AZ on my SOTA outings, then I wonder where's Charlie I know he's in AZ too. Maybe he has a monster antenna for 10m. Regards take care 73 vk5cz ..
I still can't believe all y'all got to those masts before I did!
If i hadn't just spent a bunch of money on solar and a 100 ah shack battery, I would have ordered by middle of next week.
I need one, my Goture fishing ones are breaking on me.
very nice info on the new portable mast, will surely fit my requirement of being light and can fit into kid's backpack.
Care to share your camera? very nice also
